New Jersey Governor Won't Seek Torricelli's Resignation

New Jersey Governor Donald DiFrancesco, in an exclusive interview with NewsMax.com contributor Steve Malzberg and his WABC Radio partner Richard Bey, revealed Thursday that he won't seek the resignation of Sen. Robert Torricelli should Torricelli be indicted by federal prosecutors this year.

But the news isn't as good for Torricelli's Democratic colleagues in the Senate, as Malzberg reports in his own exclusive to NewsMax.com:

Acting New Jersey Governor Donald DiFrancesco says he would not ask embattled New Jersey Senator Robert Torricelli to step down should he be indicted - but he says he would appoint a Republican to succeed Torricelli should the Senator decide to resign.

DiFrancesco, a Republican himself, is the former New Jersey State Senate Majority Leader, who took over when Christie Whitman left to join the Bush administration. He made the remarks to Steve Malzberg and Richard Bey on WABC Radio's "The Buzz."

Asked if he would feel compelled to name a Republican to replace Torricelli, DiFrancesco said, "I think so. I would be compelled to go with a Republican."

Noting the recent change in the balance of power in the U. S. Senate, the governor added, "Boy, that would make history, wouldn't it, because that would shift the power right back to the Republicans, wouldn't it."

However, DiFrancesco, who has decided not to seek election this November, will probably never get the chance to fill any vacancy. Especially when you consider that even if Torricelli is indicted he probably will not leave the Senate, and the governor doesn't plan to ask him to step down.

"No I wouldn't, actually. He works hard for New Jersey. He's been a longtime congressman. I'm hoping none of this plays out the way it's been suggested. So I wouldn't encourage that, no."

Listen to Malzberg and Bey on "The Buzz" weeknights on WABC Radio 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. EDT, 770 on the AM dial.
