This too shall pass.
It might help to know where you are. We have something similar to that here, Johnson grass, but I don't think it gets quite that big.

I am in middle Georgia
this is not Johnson grass --at least not like any johnson grass that I have ever seen
it appears to be some type of ornamental

Pic is I bit blurry but from I’m seeing, that looks like pigweed or similar. I spend a lot of time on this old farmstead every summer pulling it by hand.

I hope that you have something easier to deal with; at least I don’t have to worry about snakes! ;)

Definitely not what we call pig weed in the south. What is called pig weed here is a type of amaranth.

If I click on the thumbnail it gets larger
does it work the same for others or just for the one that posted the pics

if you have a country extension agent take a chunk and ask them,

I am trying to find out who owns the land where the stuff is growingand see if they will let me dig some roots
It is boarding a large agricultural field --usually beans or some type of grain
i don't think that they would mind if I dug up some but I want to get permission first
the county agent hasn't impressed me

Looks almost like Roseau Cane, which is experiencing a terrible blight in South Louisiana.

thanks

it is not cane --I am sure that it is some type of grass-at least not what I call cane
From my limited research it may be some type of miscanthus
