Government making "full-court press" on Arizona border

TUCSON, Ariz. A Homeland Security official says a plan to assign 534 additional border agents in Arizona is "a full-court press."

U-S Customs and Border Protection commissioner Robert Bonner says the effort will focus on illegal immigration, drug-smuggling activity and securing the border against potential terrorist infiltration.

No known al-Qaida operatives have been among those apprehended illegally crossing the border, but according to Bonner, the government has information that such infiltration from Mexico has been contemplated.

Bonner denies that the government's announcement is in response to plans by the Minuteman Project. The group says it will place volunteers, some of them armed, along 23 miles of border to observe and report illegal activity to the Border Patrol.
