Gay marriage banned in 11-for-11 state sweep

In a resounding, coast-to-coast rejection of gay marriage, voters in 11 states approved constitutional amendments yesterday limiting marriage to one man and one woman.

The amendments won, often by huge margins, in Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Ohio, Utah and Oregon - the one state where gay-rights activists hoped to prevail. The bans won by a 3-to-1 margin in Kentucky and Georgia, 3-to-2 in Ohio, and6-to-1 in Mississippi.

``This issue does not deeply divide America,'' said conservative activist Gary Bauer. ``The country overwhelmingly rejects same-sex marriage, and our hope is that both politicians and activist judges will read these results and take them to heart.''

The Ohio measure, considered the broadest of the 11 because it barred any legal status that ``intends to approximate marriage,'' gathered equal support from men and women, blacks and whites.

In Georgia, Ohio and Mississippi, gay-rights activists were considering court challenges of the newly approved amendments.

Conservatives had expected all along that the amendments would prevail in at least 10 of the states, thus demonstrating widespread public disapproval of court rulings in favor of gay couples. National and local gay-rights groups campaigned vigorously in Oregon, where polls had showed a close race, but they failed to prevent a sweep.

None of the 11 states allow gay marriage now, though officials in Portland, Ore., married more than 3,000 same-sex couples last year before a judge halted the practice.

Dupe, at least 2x, so here's my previous response.

Oh, what an important issue facing America..... And all the family units that have been under attack all these years, avoided a close-call. All the other issues pale in comparison to this - actually, earthshaking issue - exclusively for the nervous right... hmm, wonder why they are so nervous.

Maybe I missed something, but I just don't see the point of this moral (ie personal lifestyle) issue, with origins in the Bible. So, if you believe in the Bible, you follow the beliefs set forth there. Oddly, (being a Christian), this issue doesn't bother me, and I don't have the night-of-the-living-dead-gays stalking me or trying to convert me, or anything, and I'm near one of those larger, ("sewer") midwestern cities (ie with gays) that some believe shouldn't exist (both, cities and gays). They do what they want, and God will judge them accordingly, and I live my life as I believe is proper. To each his own.

Isn't this kind of like saying one religion is better than another, kind of like saying everyone should worship only one God, and Hindus and others who worship many, should be banned? Or banning pork, since it isn't Kosher? Or banning moslems, since they're all bad?

Here in Oregon it was Measure 36, and there were bumper stickers and signs everywhere saying "One Man, One Woman, Yes on 36." The imp in me wanted a different bumper sticker every day: "Two Men, Three Women, 1 Cat, 3 Dogs, A Goat, 4 Geckos" etc  Every sight of those stickers conjured menagerie combos stickers to get laughs. Oh well, didn't have time, but there's rarely a slogan that just begs for goofiness.

Since government decided to stick its nose in marriage, which has more of a religious history, eventually the government will have to legally pronounce no prejudice. Maybe government will retire from the marriage business? Nope, too much fee revenue ...

I'd love to make some bumper stickers that say something like this...

"Return marriage to how God intended it: one man, and as many women as he can collect." ;)

Homosexuality is one of the last great frontiers of bigotry in America. It will eventually go the way of other types, but like all the others, it will take time.

What surprised me last night was not those ballot initiatives, but that one of the talking heads said Bush supported civil unions? That was news to me.

Gender is the least of the howling issues, now the government has co-opted marriage as a money-making province. All the lawsuits about equality and special interests guarantee that some will insist on the right of marrying their pets, etc -- and who says it has to be limited to humans? When the aliens land, there will be people wanting to inter-species marry. Govt just wants the fees rolling in. Govt interest is not in society building or morality; it's in money.

Let's hope gays won't get most of what they want through these civil union arrangements. Thats another way they are trying to get in the back door of marriage rights. I'm disappointed that Bush favors them. This is a instance where he is trying to play both sides of the fence. Why do that? The overwhemling majority of Americans don't want this. Homosexuality is still a small percentage of the population. I hope we'll see it continue that way.

So, nobody explained why this is such a burning, important issue that we need to amend the Constitution. Or why some naive folks think that GWB can legislate anything, either on this issue or any other.... that's not his job, fyi.

It's not like legislation (from the Congress), would all of a sudden show all the misguided souls the Light, and their genes/inclinations will be corrected. Or, that legilsation would prevent this "problem" in society. It's going to be as effective as tougher and tougher gun legislation - look how effective it is in Chicago, LA, NY, where gangs (who don't follow the law anyway) have no problems getting guns or killing people, and it doesn't look like it's going to stop. Just makes it tougher on the law abiding citizens.

The myth of the GOP continues... supposedely less government (bans like this will increase gov, create new dept), less regulation (bans will increase redtape regs), less spending (someone has to oversee and enforce).... yeah right. Just more political rhetoric, with actions speaking louder. Be careful what you wish for, and perhaps, some folks need to focus more on their own lives, and less on enforcing their beliefs on others.

I believe that if 2 individuals of the same sex wish to be joind in marriage, then it should be allowed. I mean, after all, we DO have many frredoms to a point: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, etc. What's to say that this shouldn't just be another freedom? I mean who are they really harming?

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.... Right?

Bush said he supported gay civil unions just a few days ago in an interview.

Good enough for me. The whole "defining marriage" thing is a tempest in a teapot designed to manipulate the stupid, IMO.

This country was founded on extreme right wing principles by extreme right wing men.

If you want democracy then move to Iraq or Afghanistan.
