Gas Mask advice

I work across the street from a place that makes/ships chemicals. Im about a mile and a half away from a refinery. Anyone know what kind of mask would suit me best if one of those places had an accident? Not wanting a mask to keep for viruses or whatever, just wanting to stack the odds a little in my favor if either of those places were to ever release ( by accident/act of god / or whatnot) anything that would come my way.

Thank You.

Draeger Mask M- something or another. German made Israeli issue with canteen capability. You will also need a chemsuit and associated equipment as wella s spare filters (NBC rated filters)

For your needs Do NOT by a mask, you need to buy an "Escape hood". While many here will argue that a mask is cheaper if used repeatedly (it is) it takes more training, fitting(one size does NOT fit all), selecting of cartridges and practice donning ...to be effective...than people realize.

....To be effective......you do want it to be effective right?

An escape hood is meant to be used in the exact situation you have described.
>It needs no fitting, you pull it on right over your head, it can be used over beards, a two day stubble, eyeglasses, long hair, male or female and is less clautraphobic.
>You don't have to fumble attaching filter cartridges (cartridges begin to expire as soon as they are taken out of the package) that is if the filter cartridges haven't become separated and you can't find them.

Check "Lab Safety supply" for ideas and the following brands Draeger, North, Scott, MSA.

Draeger makes one I particularly like it is sealed in a can with a pull top lid. It is rated for most chemicals and is NBC rated

Whoops. The common misconception is that under the circumstances of a release of ammonium gas or chlorine gas, say from a rail car tank rupture that a mask is useful. It is NOT an oxygen supply. A mask will filter out particles. If you are in a atmosphere saturated with gases as I've illustrated above you must have an oxygen supply. This is a respitator:
http://www.omarksafety.com/category.cfm?acatid=81&aProdid=1379&Froogle=YES Good for particles/smoke.
This is the oxygen supply http://www.approvedgasmasks.com/scott-scba.htm
This may be an option http://www.approvedgasmasks.com/msa-transaire.htm
If you think you will be in an oxygen saturated atmosphere where you are trying to avoid particulates a NBC type mask like the Draeger will work until you can clear yourself from the area. I hope this helps. :chg:

Oh yea! absolutely! I forgot.

An Air Purifying respirator will ONLY work if there is enough oyxgen in the surrounding atmosphere. It will not work in an oxygen defficient atmosphere!

In that case you need an escape hood or bottle with a 5min or 10min small air tank.
But now you've upped the price from the under $300 range to the $500-$800 range.

I have three dive tanks, and two "spare air" tanks stored away. The "spare air" tanks can be found on eBay for under $100, and the regulator is built in. The larger ones can give you up to 30 minutes on surface!

search eBay for "spare air"
Like: http://cgi.ebay.com/Spare-Air-2-Tan...221555989QQcategoryZ16056QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

And you can keep this size in your car:

or even,
http://cgi.ebay.com/Aluminum-spare-...222752009QQcategoryZ16057QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
both of these need regulators and hoses though.

What Double A and Brewer said and I'll add try to get one with postive air flow or O2 generation. Some chemicals will depleated/rob the enviroment of breathable oxygen. So even if you filter it......you'll still pass out, and then pass on.
