Jose Alba, 51, is in Rikers Island this morning awaiting his first court appearance on charges of murder.
His bail has been set at $250,000 - an exorbitant amount compared with the low-or-no cash bail that is routinely given to repeat offenders by Bragg's soft-touch office.
On Friday night, Alba stabbed Austin Simon to death after Simon attacked him in the Bluemoon Convenient Store in Harlem.
Alba, who is beloved in the local community, has worked there for decades and has no criminal record.
His family launched a GoFundMe page to help pay his legal expenses - but the page was removed on Wednesday night after raising $20,000. GoFundMe is yet to explain the decision.
On Thursday, DA Bragg's officer is expected to present the case to a grand jury. He asked the judge to set Alba's bail at $500,000 - which the judge deemed too high.
This was the altercation that led to Jose Alba's arrest last Friday. Alba, 51, is shown in a blue striped shirt and hat. Austin Simon, right, arrived in the store to confront Alba who had refused to give his girlfriend a bag of potato chips
There is growing anger over the prosecution of bodega worker Alba by Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg and his office
The row began in the store on Friday night when Simon's girlfriend, who has not been named, tried to buy a bag of potato chips for her daughter.
Her debit card was declined as she tried to make the purchase and Alba insisted that she hand the chips back over.
According to police, the woman then produced her own knife from her handbag. There was a scuffle and she ran out of the store to call on Simon for help.
Simon was on parole for attacking a police officer at the time of the incident on Friday night.
State records show he spent time in both Elmira and Five Points, two New York corrections facilities.
DA Alvin Bragg's office has not commented on the decision to charge Alba.
There is growing outrage over the decision among the community in Harlem where Alba lives, and online among strangers.
Simon's girlfriend, who allegedly produced a knife and stabbed him in the arm, has not been charged.
The man's family set up a GoFundMe to help him pay for his legal defense but it was removed overnight after raising $20,000
The page no longer exists on GoFundMe. The fundraising site has not yet explained why
Yesterday, a store worker who did not want to be named told DailyMail.com: ''The girlfriend is still out there enjoying her life'.
Regulars at the shop described Alba as a hard-working father who was preparing for retirement, and was looking forward to returning to the Dominican Republic next week to visit his family.
He worked at the store every day of the week from noon to 6am, they told DailyMail.com, to 'make an honest living.'
But during his more than two years working at the store, several patrons have tried to take advantage of him, grabbing items and trying to walk away with them.
One man even once held up a gun to him, they said.
So when Simon entered the store and starting threatening him last week, he did not know whether he had a gun and could kill him.
'He never wanted no problem,' said Ahmad's son, who was working the counter on Wednesday.
'I picture him as my grandfather being in that situation.'

Police working at the scene last Friday. Alba stabbed the man multiple times in the neck and chest using a knife that the store workers use to open boxes
Scattered potato chips remained on the ground of the store after the scuffle that ended in Simon dying
Alba was working in the small store when Simon charged in and demanded that he apologize to his girlfriend for not giving her a bag of chips after her card was declined
Residents also told DailyMail.com that Simon was a known gang member, and would often talk about being in a gang.
Records obtained by DailyMail.com show he has been incarcerated several times - most recently in 2020, on assault and attempted assault charges.
He was then released from prison in May 2021.
'We want justice, we want no problems,' store employees said.
One regular at the bodega claiming if Alba isn't freed: 'We have no law here in this city.'
Danny Alba wrote on the fundraising page: 'It is with great sadness that I must ask for help for the great injustice that is taking place in my hometown of Harlem, with my own father nevertheless.
'It hurts me knowing that a man cannot defend himself without being made to look like a villain.'
She described her father as 'a loving man that always puts his family first whilst also looking after kids and people in bad positions in life that have no other form of guidance.'
She added: 'It is truly disgusting how they are trying to keep my dad in jail for protecting himself from a person who physically and verbally assaulted him before he took any action to protect his own life.
'If there is any justice left in the judicial system please let it work here, in the place where I was born and raised, Harlem.'
GoFundMe did not immediately respond to inquiries about why the page was taken down.
