And that's not made up or false. They are actually numbered like that. I think it was during Eisenhower's Presidency that the interstate highways were planned and the building was started...and that's how they were numbered. The interstate highways were designed and built so the military could move 'assets' very quickly from one coast to the other and North/South.

Eisenhower was worried the Soviet Union would send troops to our shores so he instructed the planners to build the highways in such a way that that there would be a landing strip suitable for large aircraft every 20 miles or so and that they would be sturdy enough for tank traffic and military trucks. So it is to this day.
