Friend has hyperthyroidism

A friend (female) was just diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Which is no surprise... her neck recently started swelling (the goiter symptom... ick)... She eats huge amounts of food and is losing weight, down to 90lbs now. Lightweight is normal for filipinas but not usually this light. She gave birth recently, maybe this is somehow related or a trigger?

Friend is only familiar with and seeing "conventional" doctors, who of course think the solution to everything is to drug and cut the problem, whatever it may be.

Any recommendations on what may help out? I hear iodine may help. Iodized salt of course has this, but I was wondering if it might be a good idea (or not) to give her a bottle of my KI pills?

I've also read to eat lots of green leafy vegetables and to avoid dairy and coffee. Will these really help?

Any other advice?

"The Healing Herbs", by Michael Castleman states that hops and lemon balm suppress thyroid function. Teas made from these might be helpful, but she needs to see an endocrinologist. Thyroid problems don't go away by themselves, and cutting and pills can save her life. Hyperthyroidism is a serious condition, and -very- hard on the body......

Good description of hyperthyroidism: http://www.healthatoz.com/healthatoz/Atoz/ency/hyperthyroidism.jsp

and a suggestion for alternative treatment: "Consumption of foods such as broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, rutabagas, spinach, turnips, peaches, and pears can help naturally suppress thyroid hormone production. Caffeinated drinks and dairy products should be avoided. Under the supervision of a trained physician, high dosages of certain vitamin/mineral combinations can help alleviate hyperthyroidism."

My sister had the Graves' disease version of hyperthyroidism. Amazingly, the medical profession in Colorado was unable to diagnose it. She had to come east to seek help and treatment. As I recall, part of her treatment was radioactive iodine (to kill off part of the thyroid gland). She was around 40 when she got sick. 15 years later, although her thyroid has been under control for a very long time, she has never been the same. Lost much of her memory and has difficulty coping with life. Not a disease to mess around with.

Good luck to your friend! Trog, if your friend is local, and you are still local, there is an excellent homeopath in this area. I can put you in touch with her if you are interested - send me a PM.
