DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - An American vessel fired on a boat Monday off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, killing one person and injuring three, according to a U.S. consular official in Dubai.

The official gave no further details, but it appeared the boat could have been mistaken as a threat in Gulf waters not far from Iran's maritime boundaries.

Dozens of police and other Emirati officials crowded around the white-hulled boat, which sat docked after the incident in a small Dubai port used by fishermen and sailors.

The boat appeared to be a civilian vessel about 30 feet (9 meters) long and powered by three outboard motors. Similar boats are used for fishing in the region, though Iran's Revolutionary Guard also employs relatively small, fast-moving craft in the Gulf.

Rescue workers were seen carrying one person in a body bag off the boat and placing it in an ambulance as fishermen looked on. Officials moved the boat from the harbor shortly afterward.

An Emirati rescue official at the scene confirmed the casualty toll. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the incident between the two allies.

U.S. military vessels routinely cross paths with Iranian ships in international waters in the Gulf without incident, but speed boats from Iran's Revolutionary Guard have passed close to U.S. ships in incidents that have raised alarm in Washington.

In early 2008, then President Bush accused Iran of a "provocative act" after five small Iranian craft buzzed around the destroyer USS Hopper.

Tensions are elevated in the Gulf after Iran last week renewed threats to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz - the route for one-fifth of the world's oil - in retaliation for tighter sanctions over Tehran's nuclear program. The U.S. recently boosted its naval presence in the Gulf with additional minesweepers and other warships.

The U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, based in Bahrain, said it was investigating the Monday shooting. The U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi had no immediate comment, referring all questions to the Navy.

Emirati officials could not be reached for comment.

Just heard it on Fox News too (radio).

Hopefully not an Iranian vessel. We don't need this thing kicking off quite yet.

Control of Persian Gulf is in 'Iran's hands': Navy chief

http://www.payvand.com/news/12/jul/1141.html

The commander of the Iranian Navy said on Monday that Iran has control over the Persian Gulf region. "The control of the Persian Gulf region is in Iran's hands," Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari told reporters.

The admiral also dismissed reports that the fourth U.S. aircraft carrier has been deployed in the Persian Gulf.

The top military official also said that security in the Persian Gulf can only be guaranteed by Iran.

and awaaay we go....

From what they are saying right now; the boat made a 'run' at a U.S. tanker; and after firing warning shots, which caused the vessel to leave. The boat turned around and made another "run at the tanker' that is when the tanker fired to hit the possible enemy boat/ship

gotta go to town riki tiki; "She is to be obeyed" is telling me "Let's go"...

A vessel that gets close enough to take fire from one of our ships should be seen as a threat given the tragedy with the Cole.

The Cole was hit by a much smaller vessel.

Think about what a ship the size of the one struck today might be carrying.

Further, fishing vessels are used to cover to observe movements and get intelligence all over the world.

If they were civilians, it's too bad they didn't have better common sense given the heightened tensions in that part of the world.

Things are on a "Hair Trigger" over there! It won't take much to set things off!!!

Hair trigger is what i thought of too. If I were on a ship and some speed boat was coming at me, it would be an act of generous kindness to fire warning shots. But when that boat came back a second time, it is a life or death fight.

A US flagged tanker isn't a US warship as the thread title indicates. Might want to fix that to be accurate and not to make it something that it isn't. I do realize that the first news flash might of said a US warship. But I think there is a bit of a difference between a US warship firing on a speed boat as compared to a tanker crew who is worried about piracy perhaps.

Time to get out the popcorn...I still remember watching the first day of Gulf War One when CNN really said,
"We interrupt the Gulf War to bring you these messages..."

I kid you not, I looked at my house-mate and said, "did they just say what I thought they said," and he said, "they sure did, just like it was a movie or something..."

First report: A boat was fired on by a US vessel off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, killing one person and injuring three, according to a US consulate official in Dubai. DEBKAfile: The boat may have been a fishing vessel which got too close to an American warship and been mistaken for an Iranian marine speedboat. The American ship first fired warning shots before firing on the boat. The US Fifth Fleet is investigating the incident.

Naval tension between Iran and US is exceptionally high in this part of the Persian Gulf

The US Navy has tenders, so it may have been that. The details are still unclear.

From CNN Breaking News email.

A U.S. military supply ship fired at a small boat in the Persian Gulf on Monday after it came too close to the ship, two U.S. officials said. One person aboard the boat was apparently killed.
The USNS Rappahannock, a fuel resupply ship, fired on what is described by the officials as a “small white pleasure craft” 10 miles outside the Dubai port of Jebel Ali.
The U.S. ship verbally warned the boat and fired at least one warning shot before the decision was made to fire shots to disable the boat. Officials described the course of events as standard procedure when a small boat gets too close to a U.S. Navy ship.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates July 16, 2012 (AP)

The U.S. Navy says a security team aboard one of its ships fired on a small boat after it disregarded warnings and raced toward the vessel near the Dubai port of Jebel Ali..

Lt Greg Raelson, a spokesman for the Navy's Bahrain-based 5th Fleet, says sailors aboard the USNS Rappahannock issued a series of warnings Monday before resorting to lethal force using a .50-caliber machine gun.

A U.S. consular official and an Emirati rescue official in Dubai told The Associated Press that one person was killed and three were wounded in the shooting. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the incident between the two allies.

So, is the Rappahannock enough of a target for this to be a test to see how we respond to provocation? It would seem if it tried to run it down twice that it was trying to test to see how long before we respond....

I think it would be darkly comical if another boat tried this, thinking that they'd get two runs in before getting pounded... If the navy is smart, it'll be one run and done for a while...
