We are in a moment of almost unprecedented peril in this country, and yet perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the present situation is that almost no one is talking about it. Imagine yourself on a storm-tossed vessel headed for the rocks in a thunderstorm — and everyone blissfully asleep below decks.
The war in Ukraine continues without any sign of a serious effort to bring it to a negotiated conclusion. Our only “plan” seems to be to continue to pour jet fuel on the fire. Virtually every week another senior Russian official threatens the use of nuclear weapons. This is the kind of thing that used to be considered a “crisis.” Now it barely merits mention.
China has stopped referring to “peaceful” reunification with Taiwan. It is increasingly bellicose in its language and direct in its threats against the island nation. On any given day, Beijing already has in place enough air and sea assets to blockade Taiwan, strangle it into submission and crash the world economy. This administration rarely mentions Communist China, and when it does it is to assure us that it is not a threat.
Iran either already has nuclear weapons or is so close to having them that it no longer can be stopped. It long since acquired the missiles with which to deliver them. Via its surrogates, like Hezbollah, Tehran can also deliver such weapons in unconventional ways worldwide, including inside the United States if it so chooses. We continue to hand billions of dollars to the ayatollahs.
We have lost all control over our southern border, which now is essentially a notional line on a map. The area of Mexico on the other side of that border is controlled not by the national government in Mexico City but by drug cartels. Those narco-terrorist entities operate deep into the interior of the United States and maintain observation posts on high ground as far as 70 miles into United States territory. There is no sign of any intention to rectify any of this. Our obsession remains with admitting as many “refugees” as possible and requiring American citizens to house and feed them.
Fentanyl floods into our country and kills over 100,000 Americans every year. The precursor chemicals for the manufacture of this poison all come from China. That can only happen with the approval and cooperation of the Communist regime that rules that country. The issue is barely mentioned by our government officials. Beijing is carrying out what amounts to a chemical weapons attack on this nation all day every day, and we do not respond in any meaningful fashion.
Afghanistan is a terrorist super state. Al Qaida is back on Afghan soil and operating a myriad of training camps and bases. Senior al Qaida officials in some cases serve in official capacities in the Taliban government. The Afghan Taliban provide support to the ongoing Pakistani Taliban efforts to destabilize the government in Islamabad. A de facto Pakistani Taliban government has been declared in the tribal areas along the Pakistan-Afghan border. In the balance hangs control over roughly 200 Pakistani nuclear weapons and the missiles and aircraft with which to deliver them. We are told that the Taliban in Kabul will help us with counterterrorism and to ignore al Qaida.
Venezuela has become a terrorist safe haven in the Western hemisphere. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps and Hezbollah enjoy a platform there, and Hezbollah operatives are given full packages of false identity documents by the government in Caracas. As I write this, the FBI is hunting at least one Iranian operative on our soil planning the assassination of former Trump administration officials. This administration continues to admit unprecedented numbers of Venezuelan passport holders with absolutely no idea who they really are and no plan for keeping track of them.
A multitude of reporters have noted for some time that the bulk of the “migrants” crossing our southern border are military-aged males, many of whom seem unfazed by the rigors of a difficult overland journey and appear to be moving in organized groups. The very real prospect exists that, among what are certainly many individuals seeking only a better life there may be organized groups of saboteurs entering our country on behalf of Iran, China or Islamic terrorist organizations. We detain these individuals long enough to give them a shower and a hot meal. Then we hand them plane tickets and send them on to destinations all around the nation.
Any impartial observer surveying the scene would have to assume that someone, somewhere would be sounding the alarm, but no alarm comes. That will not change the fact that we are going to crash. The rocks are getting closer, and the storm is only growing in intensity.
