The incident began with the phone call to authorities from the suspect shortly after 12:30 p.m., officials said.

"I have shot five people," the caller said, according to Sebring Police. Sebring Police and Highlands County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the scene.

"I'm heartbroken for my son," said Josh Xaver, an Indiana resident who said he is Zephen Xaver's father. "I'm heartbroken for the victims," he said in a phone interview on Wednesday.

The elder Xaver said his son moved to Florida about a year ago.

"He wasn't raised to be like this. He's always been a good kid. He's had his troubles," he said without elaborating, "but he has never hurt anyone ever before."

"This is a total shock," he said.

I'm betting that the bank had a sign that read 'No Firearms Allowed" or some such wording on the front door...
These sick ass punks need someone to take them out before they do something like this.

Lighten up. Florida is obviously not your state and you don't know anything about our CCW laws.
Actually in Florida "the gunshine state" a sign on the door saying no firearms allowed doesn't mean anything.
The only thing we have to go by is the law that specifies where firearms may be carried.
In Florida you can conceal carry in a bank.
Signs posted by businesses don't mean crap.

So, with a Florida concealed carry license, you’re pretty much allowed to carry everywhere – including banks, churches, and Disney World. If a public business has a sign or written policy against firearms it does not matter. You’re legally allowed to carry at that business, except if it’s one of these types of places:

SEBRING, Fla. (WFLA) - A woman who said she dated Sebring bank shooting suspect Zephen Xaver says he often talked about wanting to hurt people and she tried warning people in the past, but no one believed her.

Xaver, 21, is accused of opening fire inside a Sebring SunTrust bank Wednesday, killing five people.

Alex Gerlach lives in the South Bend, Indiana area and told WSBT TV that she dated Xaver off and on for two years and has kept in touch with him.

She said that Xaver often talked about wanting to hurt people and recently showed her a photo of a handgun. Gerlach told WSBT TV that she did not think anything of it.
Gerlach also described Xaver as being fascinated with death and guns.

"For some reason [he] always hated people and wanted everyone to die. He got kicked out of school for having a dream that he killed everybody in his class,” she said.
Gerlach said "every single person I've told has not taken it seriously, and it's very unfortunate that it had to come to this."

WSBT TV reported that Xaver moved to Sebring with his mother from Plymouth, Indiana and he could have relatives that still live in the Plymouth area.

Xaver appeared in a Highlands County courtroom Thursday morning dressed in black-and-white striped jail inmate uniform. He is charged with five counts of premeditated murder. The judge did not grant bond for Xaver, who kept his head down during most of the proceeding. Xaver reported having no assets and a public defender was assigned to him.

Sebring police officials say Xaver called 911 around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday and reported that he had fired shots inside the SunTrust Bank on US-27 South.

The phone call resulted in a massive police response, local roads were closed while a SWAT team responded and Xaver eventually surrendered.

Investigators did not offer a possible motive, and a police spokesman said he did not know if the attack began as a robbery.

Five people were killed inside the bank. Their identities have not been released.

The Highlands County Sheriff's Office will release more details at a news conference Thursday at 11 am. You can watch the news conference on WFLA TV, WFLA.com and the WFLA Facebook page.

Interesting, police have repeatedly stated and left the distinct impression that they first learned of the shooting via a phone call from the suspect himself. The implication is that everyone was dead before the police arrived. They do not explain why they did not think badly injured victims may be bleeding out waiting for police to enter the bank.

Now we learn that a retired couple was about to enter the bank and saw something amiss. Then they heard gunshots and called 911.

Makes no sense to me that the police would not immediately enter the bank to engage the shooter and render aid to the wounded.

It is also not clear why a bank alarm was not sounded.

Deputies identify 2 victims of Florida bank shooting that left 5 dead

By: Karma Allen, ABC News
Updated: Jan 24, 2019 - 11:23 AM

Florida police have identified two people killed at a SunTrust bank in Sebring after a gunman stormed the bank Wednesday.

Police said in an update Thursday that Cynthia Watson and Marisol Lopez were among the victims. Watson was a customer at the bank and Lopez was an employee, police said. The sheriff said the other three victims' families ask that they not be identified.

Officials said all of the victims were women.

Sebring Police Chief Karl Hoglund said in a chilling, emotional news conference Thursday that accused shooter Zephan Xaver, 21, went in to the bank. "He then shot everyone in the bank," Hoglund said through tears.

Hoglund said Xaver then called 911 and said he had killed 5 people.

Officials said they believe the act was random and they don't know of any connection between anyone at the bank and Xaver.

Were it not for Florida residents Victor and Deanna Sparks, the gunman in Wednesday's deadly bank shooting may have gotten away.

The retired couple said they were one of the first to call 911, just after 12:30 p.m., when Zephen Xaver barricaded himself inside a SunTrust Bank in Sebring, Florida, and opened fire, killing five people.

"I wasn't sure what it was, but I knew I had to get out of there," said Victor Sparks, who was going inside to make a deposit. "I was afraid there might be someone helping him in the parking lot so I just pretended to walk away calmly back to our car. As I walk back to the car, that's when I heard it -- two big bangs."

Deanna Sparks, who was waiting for her husband in the car, she said had a bad feeling when she saw the look on her husband's face after he turned around and didn't enter the bank.

"I asked why he didn't go in, and he said, 'There's either a bank robbery, or some kind of drill,'" she recalled. "I told him, 'There's no officers in the parking lot -- it must be a bank robbery.' We drove out of the lot and I called 911."

The couple had planned to get to the bank earlier but were delayed by other errands.

"Had we gotten to the bank a little sooner, I could be a widow right now," Deanna Sparks said. "We just wish they could have all been saved."

"The police came in 90 seconds, and that's when it hit me -- I really got shook up," Victor Sparks added. "I know all the people at that bank."

Police arrested Xaver, 21, who dialed 911 from inside the bank to confess before he barricaded himself inside. He later surrendered, and police don't yet know his motive.

The Sparks were questioned by police, but didn't learn until seeing news reports that five people had been killed.

"We got in the car and went to church," Victor Sparks said. "The Lord's hands were on me today. We are praying for all those families who lost their loved ones today and for the parents of that boy who just blew his life away for no reason."

The media got what they were looking for in the statements of his girlfriend "He wanted to hurt/kill everyone" and the reports that he had been kicked out of high school for threats.
Expect a renewed push for more strict gun laws allowing for "confiscation first" of firearms if a wife or close family member or teacher says someone has made threats, or if the person has been stupid enough to make threats on any social media.

RB, I have not heard about any wounded. Maybe there weren't any. Maybe those 5 women were the only people in the bank at the time. Maybe he killed the employees before they could hit the bank alarm.

My presumption is that not all of the victims died instantly. That seldom happens. It is very reasonable to believe that some victims were still alive as police refused to enter the bank and wasted time having a telephone chit chat with the suspect.

The five victims are reported to have been the only people in the bank.

All the police made it home OK. (sarc)

SunTrust victim identified as Ana Pinon-Williams, 38, former Okeechobee resident

HIGHLANDS COUNTY, Fla. — A family member identified one of the victims of a SunTrust Bank shooting in Sebring as a former Okeechobee resident.

Tim Williams addressed the media Thursday from the Highlands County Sheriff's Office and expressed heartbreak at the death of his sister-in-law, 38-year-old Ana Pinon-Williams.

She had seven children, three of them biological, as well as four step children, according to Williams.

"Her life was truly a light in this world, she made it a better place," Williams said.

Pinon-Williams was an employee at the bank when police said 21-year-old Zephen Xaver opened fire on Wednesday, killing five women.

"We do not know what was going in the mind of the individual who committed this atrocious act, but we know he was influenced by the darkness in this world," said Williams. "We will not try to understand the darkness, but with God's help we will overcome it."

What always gets me mad, is that there were gunshot victims seriously wounded who likely bled out while the cops dithered and negotiated.

That has happened on many previous occasions.

At first glance, the dark tinted glass doors at SunTrust Bank hid the horror unfolding within.

But Victor Sparks, a 20-year Sebring, Fla., resident and bank regular, was determined to solve this puzzle. It was 12:30 p.m. on a weekday. It was not a holiday. Yet the bank doors were locked.

He shielded his eyes from the Florida sun and pressed his face to the glass again.

Inside, Sparks saw several people on the lobby floor, face down and side by side, he said. Behind them was a man, pacing back and forth.

Unnerved, the 75-year-old Sparks said he calmly turned and walked toward his van, where his wife sat waiting. She saw a strange look on his face. He heard gunshots.

What Sparks learned later, after calling 911 and finding safety across the street, was that he might have been the last person to see the people inside that bank alive. Authorities identified the pacing man as 21-year-old Zephen Xaver, armed with a 9mm handgun and protected by a bulletproof vest.

He terrorized the five women Sparks saw on the ground — four bank employees and a bank customer -- before shooting them from behind, police say, in their heads and backs.

“If I had been five minutes sooner than I was, I could have been inside rather than outside,” Sparks said. “That’s probably the part that’s rattled us the most.”

Xaver’s alleged rampage, which left five dead and led to his arrest on five murder charges, shocked the town of Sebring, a small community of 10,000 people in the heart of Florida. A day after the shooting, people there still have few answers.

[Florida man accused of killing five in a bank had ‘this fascination with death,’ ex-girlfriend says]

At a news conference Thursday, Sebring Police Chief Karl Hoglund said investigators have found no “true motive” for the bloodshed. It does not appear as though Xaver had any connection to the SunTrust Bank or the women killed there Wednesday afternoon, Hoglund said. He called it a “random act” with “no specific targets.”

He said that the investigation is ongoing and that the crime scene remains active.

Visibly shaken and emotional, Hoglund offered information about the five women, all members of the small Sebring community of 10,000.

“Our community suffered a tremendous loss at the hands of a heinous criminal,” Hoglund said. “Zephen Allen Xaver knowingly and intentionally took the lives of five of our fellow community members — our sisters, our mothers, our daughters and our co-workers. Perhaps most unfortunate is that we now refer to them as victims of a senseless crime.”

Hoglund identified the bank customer as Cynthia Watson, 65, and he named just one of the bank employees, Marisol Lopez, 55. A third victim, 38-year-old Ana Piñon-Williams, was later identified by her brother-in-law, who spoke on behalf of the family before reporters and said she was a mother to seven children and “truly a light in this world.”

“There is no law that can change the human heart, but there is a God who can,” Tim William told reporters. “[Ana] accepted others where they were in life. Loving came easy for her. Loving her was easy. Living without her will be hard.”

Williams said his family rejected the idea that prayer was useless after shootings like this and that they would be turning to their faith.

The police chief said family members of the two other shooting victims did not want the names of their loved ones released. The police chief cited a Florida statute that he said grants family members that right.

The unnamed victims were 31 and 54 years old, authorities said.

Authorities had previously said the gunman fatally shot everyone inside the bank but later clarified that a fifth bank employee survived. That person, whose name was not released, was inside the building’s break room when the shooting began, and called police after escaping through a back door.

Xaver, who friends and family said grew up in northern Indiana before moving to Sebring last year, has been charged with five felony counts of murder. Earlier Thursday, a judge denied him bond during his first court appearance. Xaver was shackled and hung his head. He did not speak.

At the news conference Thursday, Hoglund presented a minute-by-minute timeline of the shooting and its aftermath. The suspect entered the bank at 12:30 p.m. with a 9mm handgun and immediately took over the branch by force, investigators said.

“He then shot everyone in the bank,” Hoglund said.

At 12:36, Xaver called 911 and told dispatchers that he had killed five people inside, that he was armed and that he was wearing a bulletproof vest, according to an arrest report. Dispatchers remained on the line with him as Highlands County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Sebring Police Department officers, crisis negotiators and a SWAT team descended on the bank.

The bank doors were locked.

Xaver told negotiators that he would not allow medical personnel to treat the victims. Hoglund said he eventually ordered the SWAT team to enter the bank at 1:54 p.m. Xaver had barricaded himself in a room inside, and authorities eventually persuaded him to surrender.

Two hours after the shooting began, Xaver was in police custody.

“Unfortunately,” Hoglund said, choking up, “all victims had succumbed to their injuries inside the bank.”

Authorities found all five lying face down on the lobby floor, shell casings scattered around their bodies, according to the arrest report.
