FBI Says Dylann Roof Should Not Have Been Sold Gun

Charleston Church Shooting

The FBI said Friday that the man accused of killing nine African American parishioners at a historically black church in Charleston should not have been able to purchase a gun.

Officials said a background check failure allowed Dylann Roof to illegally purchase a .45-caliber Glock handgun on April 11, eight days after he turned 21, at Shooter's Choice in West Columbia, South Carolina . Roof had previously acknowledged drug possession, according to the FBI.

Law enforcement officials had previously said the transaction was entirely legal, despite his pending drug charge. The weapon was purchased at the gun store which is 25 miles from his home.

FBI director James B. Comey called that assessment "a mistake in a matter of heartbreaking importance".

"We are all sick this happened," he said. "We wish we could turn back time."

Comey said there were a number of missteps that lead to Roof being able to purchase the gun.

Roof had been arrested in late February at a Columbia shopping mall by Columbia police in Lexington County and he admitted possessing Suboxone, a controlled substance commonly used to treat heroin addiction. He was indicted by a Lexington County grand jury on a state drug charge.

If a National Instant Criminal Background Check System examiner had seen that during his arrest Roof admitted possessing drugs his gun purchase would have been denied, Comey said.

"But the examiner never saw that," Comey said.

Instead, she followed protocol after learning Roof had been arrested in South Carolina earlier that year on a felony drug charge and checked with several local jurisdictions over the next three days to verify information.

Roof's rap sheet listed the Lexington County Sheriff's Office as the arresting agency, rather than the Columbia Police Department. As the examiner sought to suss through the confusion about which jurisdiction had Roof's case the mandatory three day waiting period to clear or deny a purchase expired and Roof was sold the weapon he ultimately used in the deadly church shooting.

Those on both sides of the gun policy debate have long highlighted problems with the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. Loopholes have been discovered before in the background check system, also known as NICS, which the Obama administration once described as its "most important tool" for stopping gun crime.

Comey directed officials Friday to meet with the families of those killed in the shooting massacre during a bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church to explain the breakdown that enabled Roof's gun purchase.

"Before I wasn't angry, now I'm angry," said Rev. Anthony Thompson, whose wife, Myra, was one of the parishioners killed.

If the purchase was not denied by the background check, it was legal ! There ain't no maybe with the background check. It's either approved, disapproved or put on hold for further investigation. That's it.

Right after the shooting, the news reported that his father had given him the gun...was it for his birthday, I think?

If the talk, now, is that Dylan bought it, this is probably the way the media wants it spun to show "how lax the gun sales are, and they should be tightened up", to the detriment of the public's ability to buy a weapon for self defense! This shows to go you that what you first hear, after an event is probably the truth, but it gets changed, down the line, so keep track of first reports.

Uh, FBI persons? You are part of the 'system' that has failed according to you.

Been to Boston lately FBIers? Or don't you want to be near more bombs and bombers you missed?

I see no credibility in anything that the feds say or print. None.

So, the gun-walking .gov activities get swept under the rug. No problem, we meant well. So sorry the border patrol officers were killed.

Now this psycho gets to buy a gun when it isn't legal for him and the FBI drops the ball and nine people are dead? Plausible deniability? Put that together with Roof/Ruff's statement that he "had" to do what he did. Am I starting to see a pattern?

Just further evidence that "NICS background checks" are just excuses for a large, useless government bureaucracy.

So...the background checks so often invoked by Barry the Boob, in this case, did not prevent the killer from obtaining a firearm.

Why, with this kind of federal negligence and misfeasance...Barky Obama might as well have mowed those poor victims down himself.

Unfortuneately what really happens is the idiots in charge will say since the NICS failed we need to be more draconian and just ban ownership and any kind of use. This same thing happens for all sorts of things.

Even where I work concerning overtime hours. They are posted at a cetain time. If you don't show up to sign up then shut up. But nooooo we need to limit how much you can sign up as it isn't fair.

Two days after shooting there's this ?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Justice Department will fast track the sending of $29 million to South Carolina to help families of victims of the mass murder of nine churchgoers at a historic black church in Charleston, a Justice Department spokesman said on Friday.

An unspecified portion of the money, allocated under the government's national Crime Victim Assistance Formula Grant program, can be used to provide services to the families of victims of the shootings at Emmanuel AME Church, spokesman Kevin Lewis said.

What do you see here? Gold's Gym should be shut down...all of them, immediately. And: Seagram's too...ban that.

Note: I was very saddened about the death of the 9 people and the whole tragedy. But the Confederate flag didn't do it.

The only reason the RINOs have not come for our guns is that it is the last remaining distinction between them and the Dems/Progressives. They really would like to disarm us as well, but, for now, the Second Amendment serves its purpose, allowing them to get re-elected so as to continue to claim a good share of the swag that the Beltway generates via taxes and the printing press.

When they think they can get away with it the RINOs will throw up their hands and say that they are tied when a future Supreme Court says the Second Amendment does not mean what it says.

They are all a bunch of self-serving pukes without principle or honor, (RINOs and Dems), who should be hung for treason and thrown in a ditch.

Nice comment from the feds. A lot of people feel the same damned way.

I'm starting to have similar feelings about the Civil Rights Act 1964.

Kinda went to hell in a handbasket.

My bad. I must have missed the posting about the government fast tracking millions of dollars to Wisconsin for the Sheikh Temple attacked by a gunman a few years back.

You are correct! That's exactly how it was reported as a birthday gift!

In Cleveland Co. N.C. 1979 there were a Family of 'Ruff's' who had a Son who was working for the SBI as a 'junkie'---> (agent addicted, but usable (infiltrate) in areas) insider. Cleveland Co. is where DylannStormRoof Ruff was arrested. Could the Grandson be of the agency? Just something that occurred to Me as I evaluated this a bit. Could just be coincidence.

I'd say that the 'great society' programs were a more logical cause. For the first time in history, the taxpayer is footing the bill for the unlimited production of fatherless bastards. Now they are an army of consuming locusts that have been trained to hate their most generous benefactors.

As a former prison chaplain I can tell you that the #1 demographic correlation factor across the board for criminals is a home without a father figure.

Within the first few hours after they said that the father bought him the gun, they corrected the story to say that the father gave him the money to buy the gun. It is on the original thread here on TB2K. So yes, the father still provided the resources for the purchase of the gun.
