The closest I could come so far to a cat protecting a dog is this kitten with her sleeping puppy friend.

One of my all time favorite memories i
s when we were decorating the tree a few months after we'd rescued Lucky, my heart dog. He was the smartest dog I've ever seen, much less owned. He would have been about 5 months old at the time.

We were all decorating it in the great room, and he watched quietly for awhile, then got up and walked into the kitchen. I figured the activity was boring for a puppy- no food involved. But within a minute, he trotted back in, carrying his favorite chew bone. He walked up to the tree, and carefully placed the bone on a branch, balancing it until it stayed in place. Then he walked away and lay down about 6 feet away... clearly satisfied that he had shared and participated in the ritual that was obviously important to us!

The bone stayed on the tree all season. Once or twice a day, he'd wander in and check on it... sniff it and walk away. He never tried to repossess it! Once the tree was taken down, I handed him the bone, and he immediately carried it to his toy basket and put it away!

Lucky was a total neatnick... probably part of the herding heritage in the English Shepherds, he believed everything had a place and should be kept there. Every evening, from about 5 months on, he'd trot around the house every evening and put all his toys away! I always said I wished he could teach the kids!

He was great with kittens, calves, etc. We had a litter of kittens in the house... probably about 3 weeks old, just at the stage where they are mobile balls of fluff, and into everything. One evening, Lucky wanted to go to bed... but there were 5 kittens happily ensconced in the center. He tried carefully nudging them off one at a time... but while he was getting one off, two more would climb back on. After about 5 minutes of futile attempts, he stood back and surveyed the situation. Then he grabbed the bed by one corner... and FLIPPED it! Kittens flew everywhere... he carefully laid it back down and laid down, content he had his bed back. The kittens soon crawled back on with him, snuggling into his deep coat. He looked thoroughly proud of himself for solving the problem!
