EXCLUSIVE: Palin to stump for conservative Democrats

ANCHORAGE, Alaska | Brushing aside the criticisms of pundits and politicos, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said she plans to jump immediately back into the national political fray — stumping for conservative issues and even Democrats — after she prematurely vacates her elected post at month's end.

The former Republican vice-presidential nominee and heroine to much of the GOP's base said in an interview she views the electorate as embattled and fatigued by nonstop partisanship, and she is eager to campaign for Republicans, independents and even Democrats who share her values on limited government, strong defense and "energy independence."

"I will go around the country on behalf of candidates who believe in the right things, regardless of their party label or affiliation," she said over lunch in her downtown office, 40 miles from her now-famous hometown of Wasilla — population 7,000 — where she began her political career.

"People are so tired of the partisan stuff — even my own son is not a Republican," said Mrs. Palin, who stunned the political world earlier this month with her decision to step down as governor July 26 with 18 months left in her term.

Both her son, Track, 20, an enlisted soldier serving in Iraq, and her husband, Todd, are registered as "nonpartisan" in Alaska.

Mrs. Palin, who vaulted to national prominence when Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican, chose her as his running mate last August, left the door open for a future presidential bid.

But she shot down speculation among Republicans that she might challenge incumbent Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski for the party's nomination to the Senate next year, and she blamed her resignation as governor on the nasty, hardball tactics that last year's presidential campaign brought to her state.

"I'm not ruling out anything — it is the way I have lived my life from the youngest age," she said. "Let me peek out there and see if there's an open door somewhere and if there's even a little crack of light, I'll hope to plow through it."

I'd almost like to see her run as an independent. She would certainly have a chance of winning and could throw partisanship to the dogs, where it belongs. I no longer consider myself to be a republican. Conservative Constitutionalist would be the most apt description for me, now.

If only she could line up a boatload of her like-minded friends to run for the rest of the races as independents, we might even have a shot at getting our country back. But, I almost feel like it's gone too far.

Wow... a great, great development. She has a tremendous following that could truly cause a major shift in the political climate.

Honestly, if her only role is to shift thinking away from party lines and toward what is RIGHT and fiscally sound and personally responsible, then she has done a great service to the nation.

If she never ran for office but could be at the genesis of a new party with real, American ideals, I would call her a hero.

I can't see how an Independent run at the white house by Mrs. Palin could be anything but good news for Obama. I do think she could finish a strong second. And I would vote for her over many mainstream GOP candidates.

But there is at least 10% out there that won't vote out of party. Maybe another 10% that thinks she is either too inexperienced or some other reason.

It's gonna take nothing short of a miracle to dethrone the "chosen one". Between acorn, labor unions, african-americans, hispanics (whom all will be able to vote after Obama and the Dems pass blanket amnesty), and your hardcore party loyalists he looks hard to beat to me. Oh how I hope I'm wrong on this.

I'm not sure 2012 is the time to vote 3rd party. I still hope Sarah or Ron Paul or some other deserving candidate can step up and get the GOP nomination and take their party back.

I'm currently a member of the Libertarian Party and have many disagreements with the GOP, But how else will the Obamanation go down?

Remember Ross Perot.

I agree.

Shazball, do you really think that only 10% vote straight party ticket? Have you seen statistics to back that up? I personally think that the percentage is much higher. If there were more educated voters that didn't vote straight party ticket, I don't think we'd be in the mess we're in.

I was estimating conservatively (no pun intended). I know many more do vote straight ticket, but with people as fed up with the 2 major parties I was thinking more might vote on a Indy ticket this time around. Either way it would take almost 100% of GOP base and a few Dem to put a 3rd party in the white house at least in 2012.

Shaz, I think that the seat-of-pants estimate is that 1/3 of the electorate is registered as demo, 1/3 independent, and 1/3 repub ( though GW seems to have put a dent in the number of folks calling themselves repubs).

If 100% of the repubs voted for Palin, then it would take only 1/2 of the independents to put her over 50%, and any demo votes would be totally unnecessary . Of course, she would not have to get over 50% - just more than each of the other two parties. Perhaps she could do that with none of the repub votes.
