A CME problem is one option today per http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/today.html
Although, the hacking concept is also an interesting thought. :hmm: :)

KY3 reporter Paul Adler had an online chat with a Dish Representative; Kathy wrote, "I do apologize that this has happened, I know how frustrating this can be. This is a known issue that we are currently aware of. At this time, we do not have a timeline for resolution, however we are working to correct the issue." Paul's question: Do you know what's causing the problem? Kathy wrote, "As this is a technical issue I request you to please wait for couple of hours as our technical department is working to fix the issue."

When we learn more from Dish about the problem, we'll let you know.

They are under new ownership now?

Did Obama sign an odd Executive Order?

The UN has now taken over the satellite?

Update from KY3 (Springfield, MO NBC affiliate)
On Tuesday, August 10, 2010 12:24 PM, KY3 received an official statement from Dish Network regarding the issue.

“Starting at approximately 3:30 a.m. MDT, satellite uplink provider, EchoStar, experienced an equipment failure associated with a primary video router located at its uplink facility in Wyoming, which caused a portion of DISH Network’s standard definition channels to default to a variety of international channels. EchoStar identified the failure and restored service by 7 a.m. MDT. Local TV channels and high definition channels were not affected.”

Since I was the original poster, I just have to share.
Today is the day that I had scheduled an installation for Direct TV.

LOL....

I was starting to think that Dish Network was channeling my decision, and decided to punish me for changing from their service to Direct TV.

I knew that it wasn't possible, but the thought went through my head.

Anyhow, apparently it was nothing nefarious, and I got my new Direct TV.

I had Direct TV before for several years, and when they kept pushing my monthly charge up to an unacceptable rate, in my opinion, I switched to Dish.

Of course, Dish did the same thing, so now I go back to Direct TV.

I had the installer leave the Dish antenna where it sits, so in a few years, when Direct TV starts charging me more than I think is acceptable for the channels I am getting, I will switch back.

Ain't capitalism great?
