Senator Tom Daschole.... er, Daschle, is fighting in his home state of South Dakota to retain his seat. It is currently a 50-50 split, far too close to call. Unseating the currrent Senate Minority Leader would be quite a coup for the Repubs. We shall see.

Daschle, Thune In Dead Heat; Klimisch Triumphs In SA Race

Reports poured in from across the state Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, the election brought a change in the Yankton County state's attorney office.

In the Senate race, incumbent Tom Daschle and Republican challenger John Thune were very close with 396 precincts reporting. Thune led by approximately 1,000 votes.

In the House race, incumbent Stephanie Herseth had 54 percent of the vote, compared to 45 percent for Republican Larry Diedrich and 1 percent for independent Terry Begay.

In Yankton County, Republican challenger Rob Klimisch ousted incumbent Bob Chavis in the state's attorney race. With all precincts counted but with absentee ballots still to be tallied, Klimisch had 9,458 votes, or about 80 percent of the vote, to Chavis's 2,339 votes.

In the District 18 Senate race, incumbent Garry Moore won re-election by defeating GOP rival Chris Turner. Moore, a Democrat, had 62 percent of the vote with 4,362 votes. Turner had 2,657.

Also, the two initiated zoning measures in Yankton County lost by considerable margins. Measure 1 lost 56-44 percent, and Measure 2 lost 71-29 percent.

In the Yankton County Commission contest, incumbent Brian Hunhoff collected 4,476 votes, with Mark Johnson grabbing 2,936 votes. Bob Gleich was third with 2,360, and John Harper had 2,112. Four candidates are running for two open slots on the board.

In South Dakota ballot measures, Initiated Measure 1, which would repeal the sales tax on food, was trailing 70-30 percent. Amendment A, which would change the way judges are selected, was trailing 63-37 percent. Amendment B, which would allow private-school students to use busing and food service from public schools, trailed 54-46 percent.

In the District 17 (Vermillion) Senate race, incumbent Democrat B.J. Nesselhuff led Republican challenger Judy Clark 53 percent to 47 percent, with 17 of 19 precincts reporting.

In the D17 House contest, Republican Donna Schafer and Democrat John Reedy were virtually tied in a four-way battle for two seats.

In Nebraska's 1st District, Republican Jeff Fortenberry had 51 percent of the vote, while Democrat Matt Connealy had 47 percent.

Green Party candidate Steven Larrick had 3 percent.

They were vying for seat held by Republican Rep. Doug Bereuter, who quit toward the end of his 13th term to assume the presidency of the Asia Foundation.

There were five separate gambling-related measures on the ballot -- four are part of a package put there through initiative petitions.

Initiatives 417 through 420 would legalize two casinos in Omaha, and an additional 4,900 video poker and slot machines at various locations across the state.

Three of the four measures were failing.

In the presidential race, President George W. Bush easily won South Dakota, as expected.

Bush was also declared the winner in Nebraska just moments after the polls closed there.

The last time either South Dakota or Nebraska voted for a Democratic president was 40 years ago this month, when Lyndon B. Johnson was re-elected in 1964.

In other races, Yankton County final, unofficial results -- with all precincts reporting but with absentee ballots still to be counted -- were:
  • U.S. SENATE -- Daschle 3,714, Thune 3,565. Daschle won all but one precinct.
  • PRESIDENT -- Bush 4,239, Kerry 2,868, Nader 112, others 42
  • U.S. HOUSE -- Herseth 4,296, Diedrich 2,930, Begay 58. Herseth won all precincts.
