From the near by craigs list:

http://humboldt.craigslist.org/grd/4731708132.html

Rain water collection system and rain barrels for sale.
The rain collection system is set up to connect to up to 10 barrels.
The barrels are all fitted with brass faucets.
Price for the rain water collection system: $250.00
Price for each rain barrel: $50.00
Cash.

This person has a multi barrel set up using hoses to divert the water from the down spout pipe to the barrels.

Pretty darn cool.

The barrels are raised off the ground. Being in quake country that is not necessarily a good thing.

Trying to get the hang of inserting photos and do not have it down well. Sorry for the poor quality of the images.

We have used a rain water collection system for twenty years on our homestead. Wells are deep and expensive in our area.

Definitely can be done, Just need enough containers, some rain and practice water conservation.

A big water saver is to have a composting toilet. Hate to see precious water being flushed.

We use the SunMar N.E (non electric) here on the homestead. We also use a front loader washer. Uses less water than a top loader.

For containers, a cheap and handy way to go is juice jugs ( gatoraide , Oceanspray ) and liquor 1.75 jugs. You are buying these for the contents, save the jugs. They hold up well, and cost you nothing since you purchased the contents. They are also handy to use. I have a well, but still stock up with these for if the electric goes out. Another possibility, use bleach jugs, for cleaning / flushing only, not consuming. You could even fill up the large liquid soap jugs to use for cleaning. Milk jugs just do not hold up.
