GOD WHAT A GREAT DAY THIS HAS BEEN!!!!
We got back from the inaugural about 8 this evening-It has been SUCH a GREAT day for us and for America. We all went out to eat and now everyone is settling down, tired after such a great day.
I've screamed and hooted so much today I'm hoarse. Words can't describe how moving, how incredible, how much FUN we all had today. Folks-PLEASE come to DC for Trump's next inaugural. Inaugurals are fun and we have gone to all the (Republican) inaugurals in the past 20 years. Folks, today was different on so many levels. Different in a good way.
We got to DC about 1015 this morning. The metro (subway) was quick and on time, they were on a rush hour schedule and the trains going into DC filled up quick. Ever ride the metro and all you see is a sea of red? Yes-Trump MAGA hats EVERYWHERE...people dressed in retiree hats, women dressed head to toe in red......It was awesome!!
We got off at L'Enfant Plaza-2 blocks from the capitol. The line to get into the mall area through the security checkpoints was LONG, wrapping back and forth for blocks-it quite literally took us 3 HOURS to get onto the mall (by then the oath had been administered-damn...) But, I said this inaugural was different and it was. All of us in line shared our cellphones with each other and we watched the swearing in that way. There was a retired cop and his wife behind us, a group of folks from Illinois in front, an Indian family (all dressed in red bright enough you need sunglasses-and sporting MAGA hats too. The whole family!) and people all over. We shared our phones so all could see-thats how we saw it, on our cellphones standing in line. But it was great; because there were SO MANY Trump supporters. We chatted with each other, it was awesome to see people from all over the US coming to see Trump (not just the president) but they came to see PRESIDENT TRUMP. The unity was nearly total in the crowd we were in.
There were a few protesters in line-they clearly didn't feel comfortable. I'm sure they didn't, because a yell arose from the crowd loud enough for God himself in heaven to hear when Trump said "So help me God". The line for the checkpoint was 7-8 blocks long; and all you heard were cheers, people chanting "Trump, Trump TRUMP! and "USA,USA, USA. it was a hoot to be in this crowd. Women wept, literally. (Some men had dust in their eyes too-I did and not ashamed to admit it). A line this long-and slow-would have people cussing and bitching but it was entirely absent today. There were smiles, and kids yelling and it was a poignant reminder of "We the people".
We finally! got to the security checkpoint, it was a mix of secret service, NG troops, DC police and TSA folks. And we who had been waiting forever were coming through the checkpoint and people were shaking the troopers' hands and thanking them for their service. That was a common theme today. And women were let forward by men, and people helped other people get through (we let a couple, both in wheelchairs and dressed in red) cut in front of us along with their family. We went into the checkpoint at Constitution and 7th Av. We finally got through (both my steel toed boots and my stents set off the metal detector so they had to wand me). We walked up 2 blocks to the parade route at PA av and 7th st. The volunteers ushered us into the (ticket holders only) bleachers set up on the street. We didn't have a ticket-The people running the bleachers said no problem and we sat right on the street in nice comfy bleachers. As it were, bleachers chock full of Trump supporters. Right across the street from us was the ANSWER coalition's protest stage. Which was also fun, because they would chant "Dump Trump" and a spontaneous "USA, USA" came from our side of the bleachers, drowning out the special little snowflakes. They would yell "black lives matter" and we all yelled back "Blue lives matter". At that point the cops on both sides of the street start clapping and giving us thumbs up. The cops were awesome-they chatted with us in the bleachers, were helpful to the tourists to the nth degree, etc. DC cops ROCKED today-they took care of the violent protests that took place in NW DC today. 2 were injured but they rounded up a large number of protesters and arrested them. Book'em Danno!
When the parade started, the anti Trump animals cut the cable on the loudspeaker (situated on their side of the street). Cops swarmed in, picked out two people and took them away. then a DC police truck pulls out and a gaggle of cops and 2 maintenance workers go up, fix the cable connections (surrounded by the cops) and got it working again in minutes. Then the parade began-protesters started chanting again, we drowned them out. The chief justice came through in an armored Suburban with the windows down-and one of the protesters I kid you not throws a "marital aid" at the open window, Yes, you didn't see that on the news-the protester threw a dildo at the car. He missed the window, and the dildo goes bouncing into the middle of the street. A big pink gnarly looking thing. Looked more like a tool Roto-Rooter would use.... TOO FUNNY! What was even funnier is how they handled the guy that tossed it was picked up and OVER the security fencing by the front of his jacket by a black DC cop that looked like a dead ringer for Mike Tyson. Literally grabbed the guy by the front of his coat and is bodily picked straight into the air and over the fence and wham! onto the ground face down. They zip tie the guy and a paddy wagon comes up and the guy gets nearly bodily thrown into it. DC cops may have bad managers/political leaders, but those cops ROCKED today.......
When the president came up; our section of bleachers were so loud we drowned out the protesters AND the loudspeakers. We went bonkers-the protesters got quiet. We saw both Trump and Pence in their limos; Barron, Trump's youngest son was waiving and clearly having a GREAT time.
Trump's family came through in identical limos-4 abreast down PA av. Awesome!!! As They came through, I got to really see who was around us. We had a black family behind us, an indian family in front of us, folks from Sweden to our side. And all of them were screaming their hearts out for Trump. There was even an Arab man there, with his teenage son. Couldn't understand much of what they were saying, except I heard "Trump", freedom, and America come out of their mouths. They were pretty shy-once Trump came through nobody was shy-we were America, in all it;s glory celebrating as if we just won a war (and we did folks). Backslapping, hooting and hollering; people taking pics of others groups of people for them so they could get in the photo, etc. The indian family had a small son with them, and we were all standing on the bleacher seats to get a great look (which is why my videos are shaky-the bleachers were FULL), I told the mom and the son to come up in front of us so they could stand and see-the kid was precious. He waved his American flag like it was a propeller! People watched over the kids to make sure they saw everything-parents were as excited as the kids were.
After Trump and company passed, the protesters started up again on the other side of the street. They yelled Dump Trump, we hit back hard with chants again. USA USA USA, Go home!, Blue lives matter, etc. Cops loved us. After a bit of this, we decided to head out-others were doing the same. As we were leaving we were thanking the cops for their service, and they turned around and thanked US for the blue lives matter chants. The cops were working their butts off and were thanking US. Wow, what a nice day.
We finally got up to the mall area, where the street vendors were hanging out. Their prices for stuff was actually pretty cheap-T Shirts from the inaugural 5 bucks apiece; gloves and ear muffs 5 bucks apiece. People were scarfing up the souvenirs by the truckload. Most were from out of town, trying to find metro stations to get back to their hotels, etc. The vendors would help them, we helped people with directions. There was so much please and thank you from everyone it was scary. We chatted with tons of folks; they were from all over the country and when they found out we were locals they asked about the museums opening tomorrow (they are-hell, most were open on the mall today!) and suggestions for good local food, how to get to Mount Vernon (easy, follow us home!) etc. Most of the tourists needed help with getting the right train out, and what station to transfer from red line to yellow line, blue line, etc. We had a family from Wisconsin follow us from the mall to L'Enfant plaza to get to a subway train.
The neat thing was, as we left the mall NG troops, cops from everywhere (Denver, Philly, Atlanta, Dallas-I mean they were from everywhere) had set up a gauntlet and were thanking people for attending. What a nice touch! And people were thanking the troops and cops for their service-haven't heard that in DC in oh, 8 years or so!) The train was crowded like sardines coming out of DC-but again, men were offering standing ladies their seats, etc.
All in all-the most PLEASANT inaugural we've ever attended. And Trump is now officially our president-icing on the cake. Today I am so happy and PROUD to be an American.
I took a few short videos of the motorcade and start of the parade-I put them on YouTube at the below link. I'll post pics of the day here.
