City sues gunmaker Glock alleging design flaw that allows pistols to be converted to automatic

The city of Chicago has sued Glock, one of the largest firearms manufacturers in the world, accusing the gunmaker of willfully ignoring design flaws in its handguns that allow for them to be easily turned to fire automatic rounds.

A spike in the use of “auto sears” or “switches” — quarter-sized devices affixed to Glock pistols that allow for multiple bullets to be fired with one trigger pull — has only exacerbated the city’s entrenched violence problems, city attorneys allege.

“Instead of taking reasonable action to put an end to the modification of its pistols by civilians, Glock has made the business decision to continue profiting from the sales of its easily modifiable guns to the civilian market,” the complaint, an advanced copy of which was provided to the Tribune, states.
“The result endangers the health and safety of Chicagoans and increases and exacerbates the injuries and death from gun violence — draining the City’s public health, safety, investigative, and judicial resources, and causing some City residents to fear using public streets, parks, schools, and transportation,” the suit states.

For their part, Chicago police officers have recovered more than 1,100 Glock pistols outfitted with a switch in the last two years, city lawyers say, but only after the guns were used in scores of shootings and other violent crimes. One “chilling aspect of this epidemic,” city lawyers say, “is its relationship to minors.”

“While Chicago has long struggled with an epidemic of gun violence, it is unquestionable that the ease of modification of Glocks and the resulting prevalence of Modified Glocks have made the situation worse,” the complaint states. “Criminals armed with Modified Glocks are emboldened because of their military-grade firepower, and they kill and injure more people, increasing the terror felt by ordinary Chicagoans.”
A representative for Glock did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.

The complaint, filed Tuesday in Cook County Circuit Court, accuses Glock of violating the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Business Practices Act, as well as the Chicago municipal code, by selling the modifiable guns to civilians who don’t work in law enforcement — “anyone with $20 – $25 to spare and a desire to circumvent long-standing federal and state prohibitions on possessing fully automatic machine guns can do so by buying an auto sear and affixing it to a Glock pistol.”

Attorneys for the city say the lawsuit is the first of its kind to be filed since the Illinois General Assembly amended the state’s consumer fraud law year to include firearm manufacturers.

“While it is illegal to sell machine guns to non-law-enforcement personnel, except under very limited circumstances, Glock sells, manufactures, imports, and markets pistols that easily accept auto sears to civilians, thereby facilitating the proliferation of illegal machine guns,” city attorneys wrote.

In addition to monetary damages, the city has asked that Glock be barred from selling “pistols that can easily be converted to fully automatic to Chicago non-law-enforcement consumers via its website and Illinois gun stores that serve the Chicago market.”
The case will be heard by a Cook County judge at the Daley Center, and the first hearing is scheduled for mid-July, according to court records.

In 2021, the city brought a lawsuit in Cook County court against a gun shop located in Gary, Ind., arguing that the shop had repeatedly violated federal laws by knowingly selling weapons to straw purchasers. A judge ultimately dismissed the suit last year, though the shop’s owner closed the business a few months later.

Military grade? What a bunch of idiots. And kill and injure more people? Only if they are above the idiot spraying into the sky.

Glock switches should be sold over the counter. They're already in common use thanks to the Chinese and the urban "teen" population.

The real issue is not the Glock design its the completly illegal modification of something which when used as intended, functions quite well.

Instead of suing Glock, turn up the investigstive heat and determine where the switches come from and who modified the firearms.

From here, it sounds like Chicago is trying to coerce Glock into "making it go away".

Considering its Chicago, maybe not so surprising.

For their part, Chicago police officers have recovered more than 1,100 Glock pistols outfitted with a switch in the last two years, city lawyers say

and how many of the "owners" were prosecuted and incarcerated for that
and
how many of that number are still in prison

HUGE HUGE problem with that lawsuit - Chicago has no legal standings in regard to the gun sales - the modified guns land up in Chicago and are seized from criminals - but none are Chicago purchased - some purchased in Cook County and surrounding IL counties - but - majority aren't even purchased in IL ....

Glock could change design for IL sold - still wouldn't make a difference ....

Hypothetically, any pistol can be made FA by messing with the sear (which is what the switch and DIAS do).
The ease of doing this is allegedly why the ATF won't allow any new open bolt firearms onto the market.
ANY engineer COULD do it to practically any semi-auto, and a bunch of hood idiots ARE.

BTW the NFA is unconstitutional and an infringement of 2A rights.
The general issue small arm for cutting edge US military members is a short-barreled, select-fire/fully-automatic, suppressed rifle (really a carbine......but, whatever).
That is THREE NFA restrictions on a single arm.
And since the NFA registry is closed for Full Autos, a weapon like that costs more than most cars, if is obtainable at all.
All Citizens should be able, encouraged even, to own this arm.

You can’t legally buy a magazine over 15 rounds for a handgun in the people’s republic of Illinois unless you are a cop of some kind.

What happened to Fatboys(Prickster's) new law?
18 round "Clip" sounds like a few too many!

A paper clip can convert the humble Ruger Mini 14 to fire on pull and release. A person with skills and bad intent can convert most self loading firearms to fire much faster than the inventor intended.

And some bolt actions too

So how exactly does the grock switch work?
Serious question.

Looks like it's on the back of the slide. Does it just push against that little indicator nub?

I don't own any Glocks. So other than shooting them, not liking them, then purchasing a different form of combat Tupperware I don't know the answer.

A Glock switch[4] functions by applying force to a semi-automatic pistol's trigger bar to prevent it from limiting fire to one round of ammunition per trigger pull.[5] Normally, in a semiautomatic pistol, after firing, the trigger bar catches the firing pin until the trigger is released, but when depressed by the switch it does not catch. A Glock switch thus converts the weapon into a machine pistol capable of automatic fire.[6] The device is roughly the size of a United States quarter, and when installed on the rear of the slide on a Glock pistol (replacing the slide cover plate), adds a selective fire switch; flipping the switch sets the weapon to full automatic mode, which is capable of firing at up to a theoretical cyclic rate of 1,200 rounds per minute.[6]

Heck, the only reasons why the gang bangers aren't rocking STENs is because they aren't as concealable as a handgun, modified or not, and they'd have to go to the trouble of "rolling their own". Recall the Kansas City Superbowl Celebration shooting included the gang's QRF being found having in bags or backpacks "pistol" AR-15s for "serious work".

For the "normal" use of full auto weapons on the part of such criminal organizations, the STEN is near perfect (reliability issues are more to do with parts variability in quality and the sheer number of them the UK was turning out in any place that could be called a metal shop). All they'd need to do would be to make them so they'd be compatible with the already available supply of double capacity Glock magazines. If they were to go "high end" then suppressors and a mounting for a "red dot" would pretty much round things out.

Their, the gangs, biggest potential exposure would be the footprint of the workshop(s) making and assembling them. And as I noted before, with the ready supply of good enough alternatives the risk to reward calculation of arming themselves "in house" doesn't at this time make sense.

I saw that but what is the trigger bar in context to the slide?

Glock doesn’t sell guns to anybody via their website.

Savages kill with rocks, clubs, spears, arrows & teeth. We don't want to change the savages, so let's just outlaw rocks, trees, sticks and sharp teeth. Certainly the laws will make the savages civilized.

People that lack understanding that such pistol is uncontrollable will think this is great way to fix their anger issues.
Ammo today is pricy and a firearm that can spray a magazine of ammo all over the place in two or three seconds and not hit the intended target is junk.
The city best rethink what they are doing the problem is not so much the firearm design but people that want to do things illegal.

Saw a guy at a range one time that had trained his trigger finger to such a high degree of skill that he could empty his yeet cannon almost as fast as a Glock 18 or G17 with a switch.

His accuracy sucked just as bad, too.
