First hearing about this and yes they are very popular and early models were being used on GRMS.
If true the balloon theory is not that workable someone is making stuff up but commutations being picked up by a satellite is very posable as most of these units are used with repeaters. But I still do not see the Chinese having an interest in what amateur radio operators are saying there is too much happening at any given time for anyone to pick it apart.

If the SHTF, the Chinese can find you if you are using one in a bugout situation. I heard they were banned a few years ago, after I had bought one. If things go in the toilet and the Chinese invade, I'm tying mine onto some 18-wheeler truck bumper and they can track it all they want. :)

They are Chinese! More likely they would ban US made radios and offer incentives for Chinese. Mao Si Biden says so!
