LEGAL Census

We just got a form in the mail from the Census Bureau. It says that we are required by law to answer it. Is it true (that answering is required by law)? If so, is there anything that requires us to give honest answers?

I though the census was every ten years.

You most likely got the 2024 Census Survey

Information from the Census Website in quotation marks.

“The 2024 Census Survey will provide insight into how people engage with the online questionnaire and the invitation materials they receive in the mail. This survey is being conducted as part of a small-scale testing program aimed at gathering initial data about proposed enhancements for the 2030 Census design.”

As an enumerator in 2020 during Covid I believe it was a major cluster poo due to many factors.

I do know that some areas of the US was piloting bio metric completion of the Census, there were huge failures in folks filling out online responses that were somehow lost, poor implementation of the piece of junk iPhones issued to enumerators (severe connectivity issues in rural areas, poor GPS software, supervisors deleting the dangerous household icon warning for follow up enumerator visits, disregard for enumerator safety, beginning boots on the ground enumerating starting in August versus February an payroll issues.

I had a handful of recently acquired US citizenship respondents who were so proud be counted in the 2020 Census. And many folks who chose to answer the basic required by statute questions of confirming the physical address and number of adults and children living there. Trying to enumerate addresses that had huge commercial marijuana operations was very difficult.

“This survey invites households across the country to respond to the census survey questionnaire online or by mail.

The data that respondents provide are solely for research purposes, and any personally identifiable information will never be released in any format. The Census Bureau will not produce census counts from this survey. However, respondents’ participation in this census survey will help the Census Bureau prepare for the 2030 Census.”

From my understanding the main goal for 2030 is to work out the tech issues from 2020 to have an accurate accounting. I think the whole gender issue will be a major issue and there will be revisions in counting the undocumented populace.
And to significantly reduce in the field enumerators and increase online responding.

“Yes, you are required by law to respond to this survey. The 2024 Census Survey is used to plan the upcoming 2030 Census and is not the same as the 2020 Census. We are conducting this survey under the authority of Title 13, U.S. Code, Sections 141, 193, and 221. This collection of information has been approved by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). The eight-digit OMB approval number is 0607-0971. This number is displayed on your invitation. If this number were not displayed, we could not conduct the survey.

On the front of the survey, it states that your responses are required by law. A federal statute requires individuals to respond to questions presented to them as part of the census. The statutory penalty for not responding is a $100 fine, while willfully supplying false information can result in a fine up to $500.”

I have yet to find any articles on folks given the $100 penalty.

Burn stir ashes well. Everyone is counted during census so now you know why the borders are open and the rinos have just screwed us by sending the illegals to blue states.

American Community Survey is a statistical questionnaire that goes out monthly to "lucky" folks across the county.

The regular census is right at the turn of decades. This can't be the "regular census". That would have happened in 2020.
Personally, I wouldn't lie on this thing you received, but I probably would either throw it out, or answer extremely minimally.

ACS? I throw it out.

Getting old is a bitch (I've nothing against dogs).

Only 4 or 5 threads came up in the "Is this already discussed" window, and none seemed relevant. Now, had I opened each of those and read all the posts, I may have found it. But I doubt I have another quarter century left in me!

The regular census 4 years ago sent people around. When the gal braved 3 barking dogs and stepped on the porch, clipboard and pen poised to start asking questions, I said.

"Two people live here. One man, one woman. Have a nice day!" I walked back into the house and never heard another thing about it.

The American Community Survey is the most intrusive thing I've ever seen (worse than loan applications for Farmers Home Administration, which asked how many quarts of food we canned, if we had a TV, and whether we had running water and flush toilets...as late as 1987!). It made an excellent fire starter.

And you trusted the software?

:prfl:

Sorry for the laughter. Frankly, I’ve never seen that functionality in any other software, and to me, it’s black magic.

Yep, unfortunately it's required ... but are you sure you received it?

If your address was selected for the American Community Survey, you are legally obligated to answer all the questions, as accurately as you can. The relevant laws are Title 18 U.S.C Section 3571 and Section 3559, which amends Title 13 U.S.C. Section 221.
Your answers are important. The American Community Survey is sent to a small percentage of our population on a rotating basis. As part of a sample, you represent many other people. Learn how you can respond to the survey today.
Why is the ACS required by law?
Response to the survey is required by law because the American Community Survey is part of the decennial census, replacing the "long form" that previously was sent to a percentage of households once every 10 years. Learn more about what would happen to the American Community Survey if it was not required.

The only "census"you are required by law comes out every 10 years and the next one is in 2030. You are only required to be counted. All the other questions are null and void.

The census is used for more than counting heads and filling in your family tree sixty or so years down the road:
*distribution of federal funding
*moving political boundaries around based on demographics
*planning for future federally funded services like healthcare, etc.

I'm sure there is a lot more than that in there.

I ignored it a few years ago and they sent a "supervisor" and a somewhat threatening letter. They said it was important to fill this stuff out for the local hospital to get funding. They aven threatened to close it down (it would be my fault for the hospital closing...lol). I looked the supervisor dead in the eye and told her to go ahead and close it down, because x many people live in this house and that's all they needed to know. The hospital is still open...

If it doesn't come registered mail they have no way to prove it arrived. Respond accordingly.
Well, let's examine this statement... in addition to registered, there's certified mail that can require a signature upon delivery as well as a priority envelope which may/may not need to be signed for by addressee or agent but can still be scanned to show date, time and place of delivery. FedEx can provide proof of delivery for some stuff, and I also believe that UPS has a way to verify for legal purposes. Not to say that all such services are economical, but when has that ever been a concern for dot-gov folks?
Of course, just 'cause my hypothetical blind, drunken, mentally retarded step-nephew took it but failed to pass it on to me don't mean the thing didn't arrive.

Or one of your inbred meth-head neighbors who likes to filch pretty envelopes out of your mailbox, after FedEx TOTALLY delivered it and verified it was delivered to exactly the right place.

None of which are constitutionally empowered, nor do I want.

The state is the only body that redraws political boundaries of any consequence.

You know the postal service is so screwed up its been on the news. Your answer could be you either didn't get it or you put it in the mail and the postal service lost it.
