Veg Brussel Sprouts

Every year I try to grow something that I haven't before. This year it was brussel sprouts.
I bought plants from a reputable garden center/ farm store and planted them in late April Early May.
The sprouts as of today are not even the size of a dime.
I planted them about 4 ft apart.
Any suggestions for next year? Were they too close?
Thanks for the help

When is your first frost expected? If you've got at least 3 weeks until a hard freeze, top the plants right now! Cut off the growing point, and at least one node lower. This stops the plants from growing, and they put all their energy into producing Sprouts.

Size difference is usually noticeable within a week.

We topped ours September 15th ( 30 days before our expected first frost). They are now solid columns of nice, big Sprouts. We're just waiting for them to get frosted, to sweeten them, before harvesting them.

I grew some a few years ago here in central MD. They grew great! I had lots and LOTS of sprouts.... and then the bugs came. These weird little black and yellow spotted bugs that look like stinkbugs - harlequin bugs. Kind of pretty, but they completely infested my poor plants. I tried the organic sprays, hand-picking, searching for and squishing the eggs, etc. Nothing worked. They started destroying my plants/sprouts. I even turned to using products like Sevin. Nothing mattered. I eventually just pulled the plants, threw them in a garbage bag and threw it all in the trash. I didn't even want to take the chance of putting it in the compost bin. I had never seen those bugs before, and I haven't seen them since.... go figure.
