Dude, it's rude! UK student designs chair to stop 'manspreading'

11 JULY, 2019

manspreading_-_reuters.jpg

Two people using chairs created by British design student Laila Laurel to reverse gender norms and to prevent men from spreading their legs

LONDON – "A British student who built a chair designed to force men to sit with their knees together said on Thursday (July 11) she hopes her work will encourage men to stop invading women's space.

Ms Laila Laurel, 23, created the furniture to raise awareness of “manspreading”, where men sit with their knees splayed wide apart on public transport or other cramped spaces, encroaching on their neighbour's space.

“Manspreading is so infuriating because it is quite minor... but it actually does affect women every day, all over the world, all the time and it infringes on their space," she said.

"What my aims were for this chair were just to engage people in the idea and have people sit on it and raise some awareness and start conversations."

The chair, meant to reverse typical gender norms, is shaped with a wedge that narrows towards the front, forcing the user to keep their knees together.

Another chair she built for women widens out and features a raised block in the middle compelling those who sit on it to spread their legs widely.
Cities around the world including Madrid and New York have led recent campaigns recently to discourage manspreading on public transport.

The US city of Philadelphia launched a “Dude, it's Rude” campaign in 2014 and Seattle's transport provider put up signs on buses showing a self-centred purple octopus with its tentacles draped over bordering seats.

Ms Laurel, studying 3D Design and Craft at the University of Brighton in south England, said she was inspired by her own experiences of men infringing on her space while travelling. She also drew on other women's posts about often small but regular incidents of sexism they experience using the hashtag "EverydaySexism" on social media sites like Twitter.

Her chairs won an award at a showcase last week for British student designers where judges described it as a "bold" and "purpose-driven" way to explore people's behaviour in society.

Ms Laurel said she hoped her work offered a "lighthearted" look at the issue, but could help raise awareness of everyday sexism.

"I think men are less aware of it, but dialogues about these issues are opening up so much more now and I think it is changing perspectives quite a lot," she said."

Anti-manspreading chair designer receives 'backlash'
July 18, 2019

The women's chair (left) encourages the occupant to spread their legs while the men's chair (right) forces the legs together

"A student has faced an "unpleasant backlash" over her award-winning chair designed to stop "manspreading".

Laila Laurel, from Norwich, won a major award for the seat which is crafted so that men sit with their legs closed.

She said the "concept" chair was inspired by her experiences of men "infringing on my space in public".

But since the award, she said: "I have received a lot of explicit messages from men who seem to be under the impression that I hate all men."

The University of Brighton student said this "couldn't be further from the truth frankly".

The term "manspreading" refers to the practice of someone sitting with their knees so far apart it encroaches on the personal space of people next to them.

_96435922__96431811_manspread.jpg

Manspreading is the practice of sitting with the knees so far apart it invades others' personal space

Ms Laurel's designs won the Belmond Award at New Designers in London, a major showcase of work from universities across the UK.

The 23-year-old said the reaction from those who used the chairs was "brilliant and interesting".

She also made a second chair intended for women which encourages sitters to push their legs apart.

"I don't take myself too seriously, because I really want my work to be both important and thought provoking, whilst also being engaging and funny.

"I think humour is a really interesting tool in order to tackle social issues."

_107934137_lailalaurelatnewdesigners.jpg

Laila Laurel said was inspired by her own experiences of 'manspreading' and others women's stories of sexism

She said she was also inspired by the 'The Everyday Sexism Project,' founded by Laura Bates, which collects women's daily experiences of gender inequality.

Ms Laurel's prize includes a £1,000 bursary and the chance to design a product for a hotel and leisure company.

She said the chairs were "more of a concept and not necessarily a functional design", but said she was encouraged that the judges "like the feminist slant on design"."

These chair "designs" from Opposite World (where this chick lives)remind me of this:

Anyway, anyone with ANY knowledge of men knows that those of us with a # of gonads >1 would just sit in the chair designed for women, while many women would not be bothered by sitting in the chair intended for men.

Anyone with any COMMON SENSE knows that there is a huge difference between a bit of natural leg spread (aka they knees are not totally stuck together) and I'm sorry what SOME men think it is cute to do on buses, trains, trams and other forms of public transit.

You can tell from the smirk it is often intentional and these tend to be the same jerks that refuse to stand up for an elderly (either gender) disabled (either gender) or pregnant women (obviously female) or even a parent (either gender) holding a small child in their arms.

The solution is pretty easy but sadly was not enforced, that is having parents, especially Dad; set a good example and explain that while men need slightly more room sometimes than women it is very RUDE to spread out entirely and take up more than one seat.

Men can do this, I've seen lots of men, even fairly heavy ones manage to be polite and do their best not to be a jerk; if most men did this such "chairs" wouldn't be needed but actually, I can see how they might be on some public transit.

They probably won't actually get used though, because it is cheaper just to do the "one seat" with markers thing which sort of invites all sorts of seating issues, not just manspreading (including people putting a huge package on their lap and blocking others from sitting down).

I keep waiting for the satire mark up language. I will promise to not manspread if women promise not to take up more lateral space with their hips. Crikey, lunacy is being normalized.

Smug, simpering bitch.

Now, and award and a job. She designed a stand alone chair to solve a problem occurring on crowded public transportation. Bit of a mis-match. Of course, we all know that wasn't the ACTUAL *problem* she was trying to solve.

This disgusts me.
I have nothing but ill will for her.

Male equipment envy. Another if you do not conform to ME you are contemptable.

My way of dealing with jerks who really and truly "manspread" on public transit (as opposed to simply sitting in a normal but not squashed position) is to take my cane and sit down on the seat that the leg is spreading on to - it is amazing how fast their legs move.

I mean I wouldn't be stupid enough to do that if I really thought there was a chance of serious violence, but just your normal everyday jerk taking up two spaces on the Dublin Luis line (seats that are supposed to be for the mobility challenged and folks with young children anyway) I am happy to "instruct" in this manner.

Besides, if they don't move I will probably fall on them anyway (and have) it isn't intentional but a bi-product of the reasons I need the seat (I can't and have managed to hold on for dear life if someone needs that seat more than I do, like someone whose a frail 90 years old but I still sometimes fall totally by accident).

I don't like this women's attitude but the problem is real, I do hope that all the men here understand the difference between a little biologically determined spread and actually opening their legs wider than anyone but their partners should ever have to see and intentionally taking up more than one space on a bus or other transport.

Please - “manspreading” is a feminist term used to denigrate men. “Taking up more than one seat” is how it was said in the days before feminazis and snowflakes. (Note that there is no gender assignment to the term.)

So you deliberately ignore seating options to force compliance with your norms? Am I reading this correctly?

No, this happens when (as is very common) in Dublin in particular there are NO seats left and the "jerks" (aka the really rude manspreaders) are sitting in the seats designated for those with mobility issues or with small children.

I have run into similar problems on the London tube and I've also seen very elderly people (of both genders) get up to give up THEIR seats either to me (which I only take if I'm going to fall otherwise) or pregnant women/seriously mobility challenged the individual.

In those cases, I'm actually talking about giving up seats which I only expect when the seats are designated for those of us with mobility issues, but when there is no place to sit and some "jerk" is taking up two spaces simply because they think it is cool to spread their legs out to be "cool," "sexy," or "rude," I will start to sit down in what should be an EMPTY SEAT next to them and as I said, it is amazing how fast their legs tend to move.

I am sorry if I was misunderstood, my preference given my tendency to fall down on public transit is just to take the first open seat if there is one, in the handicapped area if there isn't and do my best not to fall on people if there simply is not seating.

It is only when someone is taking up two seats for no reason (a parent with a small child is a good reason) I pull the "I am sitting down, you might want to move your leg," number.

So on a crowded bus there will be designated seats for men and women, so people will have to stand if the correct seat type is not free.

No. Public transportation seating goes first to the elderly, the disabled, and the heavily pregnant. That courtesy is a Western custom (probably Japan too), not anyone's individual norm. Just because the population is clogged with self absorbed POS trash, doesn't mean the rules can't be enforced. If someone has their leg flung over a second seat, they SHOULD get sat on!

Well, that is why the "special chair" is rather silly (I agree with you on that Richard) and also it simply isn't going to happen because the cheapest way to make transportation seats for most rapid mass transit is to have basically one long bench - they are not really "seats" but designated areas sometimes with small openings between them but more often not.

A lot of this really should be handled with a combination of civility and common sense, something that is often sadly lacking in many aspects of modern life, especially in urban areas.

Here is the original thread:

Not The Onion! Woman Designs Chair To Prevent "Manspreading"
http://www.timebomb2000.com/vb/show...quot-Manspreading-quot&highlight=manspreading

I will post my same reply as I see some of the lame excuses denigrating men on this thread:

It may end when some (not all thankfully) men quit intentionally taking up two or more seats on buses and trams throughout the western world sometimes plopping themselves in the handicapped section and/or refuses to move their "testicle spread" so an obviously elderly, injured, pregnant or other people who obviously need to sit down can do so.

I do think the chair is a bit silly and over the top but I do understand her point, there is a HUGE (pun intended) difference between the way a polite and courteous man sits on public transport (and similar situations) and the intentional louch of the "man" who spreads their legs as far apart as possible and keeps others from being seated

NO ONE has balls THAT BIG, and if they do they would likely be in surgery...

Sounds feminist to me...

There should be separate designed seats for the young and old, men and women, fat people, all minority types, short, medium and tall people, those who want a specific seat type according to their religion or belief system, etc etc and all these seat types should be available on all forms of public transport, seating and specifiable on coaches, cars and furniture etc etc.

What amuses me about these feminists types is that they are inadvertently bringing back Victorian ideals of separation of the sexes. Literally reversing the alleged gains of sexual freedom for both men and women over the last 60 years. Imagine separate seating for men and women. Well its back apparently.

Whatever happened to the ideas of 1) first come, first served (or seated), or 2) if you want better service (to include seating, such as at concerts), you understand you'll need to pay a premium price? If some stranger paid the same as me, and they want my seat that I got to first, there's a short pier they need to take a long walk on, one way, at night, alone. (I'll make exceptions for a wedding-ring-equipped white pregnant woman who's nonwhite child/companion-free and free of extra piercings, tattoos, blue/shaved hair, etc., or a disabled man with a cap on indicating he's a mil veteran, but that's about it.)

I think the same logic should apply to parking spaces as well. Let the UPS trucks all pay for better parking, along with all the 350-pound 40-YO diabetics who can't walk any farther than between the TV and refrigerator anymore.

‘Penis Seat’ Causes Double Takes on Mexico City Subway

By SOPAN DEB and MARINA FRANCO March 31, 2017

"A campaign against sexual harassment, created by the Mexican government and UN Women, featured men reacting to a seat made to look like male genitalia.

A seat in a subway car in Mexico City’s metro system caused a stir earlier this year. There were awkward glances. Visible discomfort. Baffled looks. Some laughs. And of course, the inevitable pictures from passengers’ camera phones.

It was meant to be provocative, and it was. A seat was changed to look like the lower half of a male’s body, including the penis, part of a campaign by UN Women and the Mexico City government to raise awareness about sexual harassment on subways.

On the floor beneath the seat, there was a sign reading, “It is annoying to travel this way, but not compared to the sexual violence women suffer in their daily commutes.”

The campaign has now released a video titled "Experimento Asiento" — “an experiment with a seat” — that has had more than 800,000 views on YouTube since March 20. It shows people reacting with a mixture of discomfort and shock throughout. One man even tried to cover the seat with a coat to sit on it. It didn’t work. He abandoned the seat, as did others who tried to sit in it during the experiment in January.

UN Women and the Mexican government collaborated on a second video as well, which has also begun picking up traffic. It is called “Experimento Pantallas” — or “experiment screens.”

That experiment involved installing cameras that would take tight shots of male buttocks and display them on screens for all to see. In the video, a number of men are shown expressing disgust and embarrassment.

“We wanted to do something different,” said a Yeliz Osman, a program coordinator with the Mexican UN Women office. “We wanted to target men because on a global level, the majority of programs talking about sexual violence or sexual harassment always target women and girls. We wanted to change that because we don’t think that women are the problem.”

The campaign is called #NoEsDeHombres (a rough translation would be “this isn’t manly”), and it is aimed at men, both with the video ads and with newly unveiled print ones that show guys giving lascivious looks with slogans like “this is how your mother gets looked at every day.”

These particular ads came about after UN Women and the Mexican government took open submissions for ideas on a campaign to target a male audience. Around 40 agencies submitted pitches and J. Walter Thompson won.

“We need to make clear that this is violent, not flattering, and incentivize men to intervene if they witness it”, said Ana Güemez, director of the Mexican UN Women office, during the presentation of the campaign this Thursday.

According to a national survey done in 2016 by the Mexican Institute of Women, Inmujeres, nine out of 10 women or girls who use public transportation feel unsafe while doing it. A wide-ranging Reuters survey done in 2014 also showed that the Mexico City transport system is the second-most dangerous for women overall out of 15 world capitals. However, Mexico City was squarely in first place for specific questions like “have your been verbally harassed?” or “have you been groped?“

“In order to generate change, you need to create empathy,” Ms. Osman said. “The idea is that men can get a sense of what it is all like. By creating empathy, we hope that this might change their behavior.”

The Mexico City government has begun to take action: It is now possible to file an administrative complaint if you get catcalled (the perpetrator either pays a fine or spends a night in jail), and last year it started handing out rape whistles on the subway so that women could “warn of possible crimes” (a plan that was not without its critics).

The issue has gained prominence in the past few weeks after a well-known blogger, Tamara de Anda, was publicly criticized for talking about filing a complaint against a taxi driver who accosted her verbally while she was walking down the street. Insults on social media ranged from telling her she wasn’t attractive enough to be offended by the driver’s catcall to issuing death threats.

Ms. De Anda was one of several Mexican public figures who participated in the presentation of the #NoEsDeHombres campaign, alongside the wrestler El Hijo del Santo and the actor Alfonso Herrera, familiar to United States audiences from Netflix’s show, “Sense8.”"

MS there are laws in both Ireland and the US about the provision of seating for the elderly, handicapped and mobility challenged; there have been some issues recently in Dublin over buggies vs. Wheelchairs and the court rulings so far are the wheelchairs get first dibs, buggies come after wheelchairs.

Those sections tend to be at the front of the bus/tram for obvious reasons, as long as you don't sit in those reserved seats (and they say so) you can sit anywhere you like and there is no law going to force you to get up if a 97-year-old fragile elder dodders onto the bus, though my mother might have shamed you by getting up herself even when she was nearly 80.

ANYONE can become temporarily handicapped and while I wouldn't wish that on anyone, Richard it only takes a broken leg in a cast for a few weeks (or even your shoulder) to figure out really quickly why there are always a few seats reserved for those of us with mobility issues.

I have to make way for wheelchairs (and I understand why) but I'm not tolerating young yahoos INTENTIONALLY taking up two seats when they have no reason to do so (aka their leg is not in a cast, nor do they way 400 pounds).

Er... bw? I'm a bit confused by your response. I don't believe ambereyes was denigrating the less fortunate... she was saying that anyone without the common courtesy to give up their seat to someone who is clearly struggling physically, is a disgusting POTrash- regardless of how clean, nice smelling and well dressed they might be.

And MS? Really? You honestly believe thst if this woman decides to have a few kids, she'll soneh9w change her polutical views and raise three productive members of society? Why? Because she's white?

I'd much rather the lady I ran into in the Emergency room a few months ago have several more children... her 9 year old boy (guessing ages here) offered his seat to a older lady so she and her husband could sit together, and the 4 year old girl was quietly reading to the toddler in the stroller. They were clean, well dressed and well behaved... oh, and black as coal.
