Briggs&Straton engine

My riding mower engine won't start. It ran fine a few days ago. It wont turn over enough to start.(turns over once and stops) I checked the battery and even boosted it. I then replaced the starter, still barely turns over. Now I pulled the spark plug and it spins like a top. I thought stuck valve? Removed valve cover and everything looks OK when I turn it over with the plug out. This one has me scratching my head. It's a 16.5 hp overhead valve. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Valve adjustment and the lash is given about but which is the intake clearance? Also I had run in with spark timing! Theres a keyway that holds the flywheel in place and if its sheared off the spark timing will be off ( its part of the magneto).
I'd go with the valve adjustment first and can't hurt to check it.

I had this starting problem that came out with 2 different results. FWIW, the OHV Briggs & Stratton engines are vulnerable to blowing the head gasket in one particular spot. That happened to mine, which allowed cylinder pressure to vent to the crankcase. This blew a LOT of oil into the cylinder.

These engines also suffer from carburetors that can leak gas and flood the cylinder. That can actually cause a hydraulic lockup of the cylinder. Happened to me and was advised the factory fix for that was to install a gas line shut off valve. (??) Whatever, it did work.

but when you take the spark plug out and then it turns over OK and no gas or oil blows out it is the valves out of adjustment..
