I don't follow sports but even I know that Manchester United's football (soccer) team is like a religion to many people on this side of the water. This is the number one news story over here right now and for a good reason.

They are now saying "the device" which was blown up after the stadium was evacuated was "non viable" but it sure did look real (from other reports).

Some articles are blaming this on "Republican Terrorism" (over here that means modern Irish/IRA clones not rabid senators) but that was certainly not my first thought.

Now the older versions of the IRA made it a hallmark to call in a warning so if that happened it probably was a new wave of an old problem; but I do have to wonder given the recent ISIL/ISIS threat to the UK?

My other thought was that whomever did it has now learned they can shut down even extremely important sports or other public venues by simply putting fake bombs in them.

After a lot of fake ones, people are likely to get careless and then well...it only takes one...

A controlled explosion has been carried out at Old Trafford after a suspect package was found before Manchester United's match against Bournemouth.

Greater Manchester Police described the device as "incredibly lifelike" but later confirmed it "wasn't viable".

The Sir Alex Ferguson Stand and the Stretford End were evacuated before the game and sniffer dogs brought in.

Kick-off, due at 15:00 BST, was delayed and shortly afterwards the match was abandoned on police advice.

A bomb disposal team carried out the explosion at about 16:30 BST.

Just under two hours earlier, an "operation red code" alert had been heard over the public address system, and the players who were warming up had left the field.

Fans were then advised that, because of "the discovery of a suspect package in the north-west quadrant of the ground, the match has been abandoned for today on police advice".

Supporters who were still in the ground were advised to stay in their seats while the forecourt was cleared of fans who had been in the two stands that were evacuated.

Manchester United v Bournemouth abandoned

While the evacuation was occurring, Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward spoke to Premier League chairman Richard Scudamore about the game being called off, BBC Sport's football correspondent Phil McNulty revealed.

The Premier League has announced it is looking to rearrange the match as soon as possible.

"The game will definitely need to be played but there are logistical issues that need to be resolved," a statement read.

"However, they cannot even start to begin discussing them until the police have done what they need to do here [at Old Trafford]."

Speaking before the controlled explosion was carried out, assistant chief constable John O'Hare of Greater Manchester Police said their priority "was to ensure the safety of everyone in the stadium and surrounding area".

He said "military colleagues" were assisting with the incident, adding: "We don't make these decisions lightly and we have done this today [abandoned the match] to ensure the safety of all those attending."

United players were seen leaving the ground shortly after 16:30 BST. BBC commentator Conor McNamara said he saw Bournemouth players and staff boarding their team bus outside Old Trafford around an hour later.

The south coast club later confirmed they would be flying back to Bournemouth on Sunday night.
'A dark day in Premier League history'

Manchester United had started Saturday with an outside chance of qualifying for next season's Champions League by finishing fourth in the Premier League.

However, Manchester City's draw against Swansea in their final game means United are effectively out of the running, with City three points clear of United and possessing a goal difference that is 18 better than that of their rivals.

Sean Bones, vice-chairman of the Manchester United Supporters' Trust, said: "It is obviously a dark day in Premier League history. We have obviously got to give our thanks to the club and the authorities for getting supporters out of the ground safely and home to their families.

"If it turns out there was a bomb at Old Trafford, it is obviously a concern that we have these type of people in our midst and it is going to have a huge effect on security at football matches in the future."

Tens of thousands of people were forced to evacuate Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium minutes before kick-off after a suspect package was found.

Members of the Army Bomb Squad later went to the ground to examine what senior figures told the Independent appeared to be a phone attached to a gas pipe.

Greater Manchester Police described the phone device as "incredibly lifelike" and a controlled explosion was then carried out within the stadium.

On further inspection, police said the device "wasn't viable" but a search of the stadium is still ongoing.

Players who had been warming up were told to leave the field and fans were initially asked to leave just the Stretford End and the Sir Alex Ferguson stands.

However it was then announced that the game had been abandoned and everyone was asked to leave.

Sniffer dogs and an army bomb disposal unit arrived at the scene and could be seen walking through the stands and on the side of the pitch.

Speaking before the bomb squad's arrival, Assistant Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police John O'Hare said: "We are doing everything we can to investigate this item as quickly as possible, however our priority is obviously to ensure the safety of everyone in the stadium and surrounding area.

"As a result, today's game has been abandoned and a controlled evacuation of the stadium has now taken place.

"We are awaiting the imminent arrival of military colleagues to come and support us and establish what exactly we are dealing with."

He apologised for the inconvenience caused to fans, saying they did not "take the decision lightly" and thanked people for their support and assistance.

The club has described the incident as "Operation Code Red".

A spokesman for Manchester United said: "Due to the discovery of a suspect package in the North-West Quadrant of the Old Trafford ground, the match against Bournemouth has been abandoned today on police advice.

"People in the stadium were asked to remain in their seats while the forecourt was cleared of fans already evacuated from the stadium."
Old Trafford evacuation

The initial evacuation came just 25 minutes before their Premier League match with Bournemouth was due to kick off at 3pm.

A car park outside the ground was also blocked off, according to reports.

The date when the match will be played is yet to be determined as club officials say they cannot set a date until the police has finished its work.

Manchester United went into Sunday hoping to qualify for the Champions League however Manchester City's draw with Swansea means that is now a virtual impossibility - unless they manage to beat Bournemouth by 19 goals.

Manchester United is due to take part in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace next weekend.

By MICHAEL EDISON HAYDEN

The suspicious device that prompted Manchester United's Old Trafford Stadium to be evacuated an a Premier League match to be cancelled Sunday was actually a training device that had been forgotten in the stadium after a recent exercise, police said.

After the evacuation, a British Army bomb disposal unit was deployed to the stadium on Sunday to carry out a controlled explosion.

HI thanks! Been off doing other things this evening (I don't actually live on-line it just looks that way sometimes) yes that appears to be the case - followup from BBC, I think heads are going to roll over this one...

Old Trafford: Suspicious item destroyed at stadium was training device

A suspicious item discovered at Old Trafford on Sunday was a training device, police have confirmed.

The match between Manchester United and Bournemouth was called off after the device was found shortly before kick-off. Bomb disposal officers were called and carried out a controlled explosion.

Police said the item had "accidentally" been left by a private company after a training exercise on Wednesday.

The Premier League match has been rearranged for Tuesday at 20:00 BST.

Greater Manchester's Mayor and Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd called the situation "unacceptable" and wants an "urgent" inquiry to discover "how this happened, why it happened and who will be held accountable".

He added: "This fiasco caused massive inconvenience to supporters who had come from far and wide to watch the match, wasted the time of huge numbers of police officers and the army's bomb squad, and unnecessarily put people in danger, as evacuating tens of thousands of people from a football stadium is not without risk."

United will be refunding all tickets and allowing ticket holders from both clubs in for free. Manchester United season ticket holders will also be given a credit.

It is estimated this gesture will cost United around £3m.

Bournemouth expect to make an announcement on arrangements for their travelling fans on Monday.

Anyone else think, in light of events "on the Continent" that this possibly was in fact a "training exercise" as well?...

Police Commissioner demands inquiry into Manchester United fake bomb 'fiasco'

Manchester's police commissioner demanded an inquiry into the "fiasco" of a fake bomb left behind from a training exercise at Old Trafford that forced the abandonment on Sunday of a Premier League soccer match.

The device led to the evacuation of Manchester United's stadium about 20 minutes before the scheduled 1400 GMT kickoff of their final game of the season against Bournemouth.

"This fiasco caused massive inconvenience to supporters who had come from far and wide to watch the match, wasted the time of huge numbers of police officers and the army's bomb squad, and unnecessarily put people in danger," Police and Crime Commissioner for Greater Manchester Tony Lloyd said in a statement.

I do suspect there is more to this story than a keystone cops security company leaving a device - though that is possible (low bids happen in Europe too) but I do have to wonder.

I mean there have been ZERO press updates that I could find on the car pulled over in Dublin over a month ago now with SIX WORKING BOMBS stashed in it-there was a note a few days later saying the driver was being interviewed by police but after that dead silence.

While it is not unusual for the press to withhold names before charges are brought, they are almost always publish names after folks are charge; so were the bombs in Dublin driving by someone innocent (someone's wife or partner who obviously had not clue), was someone in the car an informant, are the cops hoping to smoke out others, or is the case just being buried due to pressure from higher ups possibly even outside Ireland?

The kicker is that if their names are "Paddy" and "Sheamus" then it is most likely the old Irish "Republican" stuff in recycled form; nasty but at least home-grown and well understood.

If their names are Ali-Wanna-Bombie and Abu A Blowupie; that would be a real shock to folks in Ireland and all sorts of things could happen (the Irish are really only the Land of a Thousand Welcomes if you either a tourist who is going home soon and/or have some (even fictional) ties to Ireland). They've accepted the Polish immigrants because the cultures meld really well (hard work, family oriented, farmers, Catholic etc) and they tolerate the colorful colony from Brazil that is in the West (as long as it doesn't get to big) but the African evangelicals had better keep their heads down and anyone who looks "funny" is kind of suspect.

No one is going to admit to what I just wrote, but quietly people will say things like "be careful of refugees, they want to steel your mobile phone"...

A real attempted or actual terror attack that isn't home grown is likely to cause a terrible back lash...

Yep, I do "wonder" about what just happened in the UK; that match was a huge public event; sort of like leaving a "fake device" at the Superbowl finals match in the US a few weeks before the Big Game itself.
