hello everyone,
dh has had high bp for about ten years now. when he's good about diet and exercise, it goes down. as does his type 2 diabetes. but he is becoming complacent in the last year or so.

the diabetes is more controlled, because he has a glucometer, and i make him stick to taking his readings. he doesn't do it every day. he does it once or twice a week and if it's high i make him monitor it more closely, and that seems to force him to think about what he's eating, and it will go down.

now, as to the bp thing. i'm thinking of getting one of those bp cuff things. we've seen them at walmart. in november his bp was high and the doctor upped his bp medication. he's to go back in three months, which will be at the end of february, to see what his bp is like.

so, does anyone have any experience with these gizmos, and have any advice on which kind or brand to get? are they easy or hard to learn how to operate?

thanks for any advice that can be given.

I bought a digital one at CVS a few years ago. It worked great and gave peace of mind. Someone eventually had more need for it than I did so I gave it away. I asked the druggist for his recommendation and was satisfied with what he said. That's what I would suggest. If you have the occasional opportunity to check it against a known BP you'll know how much you can rely on the accuracy.

We have a small one, Life Source, which is digital. Think we got it at a yard sale for a couple of bucks, so don't think you have to buy an expensive one. Hubby uses it several times a week, and we have found it to be quite accurate. I got my BP checked at the doctor's this week, and ours was within one point or two of the doctor's. If we are in a drug store where they have free ones hubby usually checks his, and it is also close to what our little one says. I'm just trying to figure out what to do to lower mine without going on any BP medicine, but nothing has worked so far!!

thanks brooks, for the information.

leafy, if you don't mind, how high is your bp? my DH bp has been going up in the past couple of years, and he is on a higher dose of medication now. he has to go back next month for a check up and to evaluate the higher dose. i too am searching like made for dietary changes to help the situation. it's complicated because he has type2 diabetes also.
i'll check back here tonight when i get home from work.
bye,

I am not a doctor. But, a lot of people I know control their bp with diet, exercise, meditation, garlic and hawthorn.
A lot of people especially women are very stressed in our current times. Working, kids, hormonal changes, bills, spousal lay offs, prepping just to name a few. That is what the above suggestions are for.If your bp is really high or you have headaches or other physical symptoms then see your doctor first to determine a possible cause.

Hi Breezyhill, my BP this morning was 163/111 which is high - after my morning 3 mile walk it was 137/88 - but it doesn't stay there. I am already on BP meds - Diltia XT 180 mg, once a day but it doesn't seem to help - the doc wanted to put me on more this week, but it was a diauretic and I do not want to go there, so am trying to find an alternative. I am a Grandma, healthy, within my weight limit, walk 3 miles 5 mornings a week, bike once or twice a week about 5 miles each time weather permitting, eat very healthy, 3 meals a day , cut out most snacks-- -- do the carrot juice thing, vitamins, etc. My mother died (at 86) of a stroke, and my father died of a heart attack (at 72) so probably have inherited one or the other, so that is why I am more concerned!!

Hope you find what you are looking for, for your hubby - understand your concern!
