I'm posting this one because something just doesn't "ring right" regarding the perp's behavior and to point out and give a "High 5!" to the "Good Sams" who went to assist the wounded officer. I've used this station a lot over the years and ate across from it before my "Big East Bay Adventure" some may recall me posting about.....(My family and I have also been fortunate to have benefited from the skill of the staff of Eden Hospital's ER more often than I want to think about...)

HAYWARD -- A BART police officer was shot in the arm Friday morning when a man lurking near the Hayward BART parking garage suddenly took off and fired a shot at a pair of approaching officers.

The second officer fired back, wounding the fleeing man in a heart-pounding shootout that pierced the quiet of Christmas morning.

Mauricio Palma, 15, had just opened a new drone for Christmas and was about to leave with his father to get batteries when they heard three gunshots nearby about 11:15 a.m. When they ran outside, they happened upon the dramatic scene: Two officers struggling to handcuff a man in Grand Street, a block west of the BART station.

"Quiet!" the officer yelled at the suspect in a video the boy shot. "You just stop right now!"

After the stuggle, Palma watched as one of the officers sat down, bleeding from his upper arm. When the officer took off his jacket, the boy said, "there was a lot of blood. He was kind of woozy."

"I went over to help him,'' Palma said. "I told him to put his hand on it and put pressure on it."

He said he helped the officer to his feet before a police car raced up to take the wounded officer to the hospital.

In Palma's video, the other officer stood over the suspect, who was lying in the street with a handgun a few feet away. The boy said he was so close that he able to see the suspect had at least two or three bullet wounds -- on his hip and on his side.

By mid-afternoon, official details of the shooting were still sketchy: BART police say the two officers tried to stop a suspicious man about 11:15 a.m. at the Hayward station parking garage, when the man took off and turned and shot at the officers as they chased after him.

One of the officers was struck in the arm, BART spokeswoman Denisse Gonzalez said. The other officer fired back, wounding the fleeing man.

Both the injured officer and the suspect were taken to Eden Hospital. The officer is expected to survive, Gonzales said, but the suspect's condition wasn't available. Neither have been identified.

The shooting happened a block from Hayward's downtown BART station, which remained open on what otherwise was a quiet holiday morning with traffic picking up later in the afternoon for the Warriors game.

For Mauricio Palma and his father, the drama was an unexpected chance to help an officer in need.

"Police officers are citizens too and if you see a citizen in need of help you stand up and you help him,'' the younger Palma said. "What if he'd been shot in the chest and no one helped him and he died?"

HAYWARD, Calif. (KGO) -- BART police discovered a dead man inside a U-Haul truck that was used by the man who allegedly shot a BART police officer in the arm at the Hayward BART station Friday morning, according to police.

The body was discovered as investigators were conducting a forensic analysis of the suspect vehicle, police said.

Police said the suspect, who was also shot by police, used a stolen gun and the U-Haul had swapped plates. The suspect also had a prior record, including burglary and drug charges.

No other information was immediately available on the body found in the truck.

People who witnessed the shooting were pretty shaken up. Mauricio Palma, 15, and his dad were enjoying Christmas when they say they heard the gunshots.

"Opening presents it's excitement, but too much excitement when you have gunshots in the neighborhood," Palma said. "It's scary for a kid my age."

Outside they discovered a BART police Officer shot at the Hayward station. Also, a struggle to subdue the suspect. Palma took video of what happened.

"He was still trying to get up and then the officer was pushing him down," Palma said.

According to BART police, officers saw a suspicious person by the parking structure around 11:15 a.m. in a U-Haul with a broken window. He told police his name was Charles Goetting, a man who police say is on searchable probation.

Witness says he heard approximately 6 shots to officer, shot in shoulder and 1 to suspect. Both taken away in ambulances.

Officer shot was a Bart police officer not Hayward Police Officer. Hayward is providing a traffic barrier/support.

"When my officer asked for him to put his arms on his head he reached into his waistband and produced a weapon," said Jeffrey Jennings, Deputy Chief of Operations of BART police.

According to officials, Goetting shot one BART police officer in the arm. The other BART officer shot Goetting several times.

Palma says he and his dad focused on helping the officer shot. "I told him to tie the thing and press his hand on the wound," Palma said.

Witnesses estimate they heard as many as six gunshots. It is unclear how many bullets hit the officer or the suspect.

"They were cutting his clothes to see where the wounds were," Palma said.

What appeared to be the suspect's shoes, clothing and backpack remained on the scene after the shooting.

Alex Martinez was driving past BART at the time. "I was just in shock just to see it," Martinez said. "I was right across the street, like 25 feet away. Luckily, they were aiming towards the BART garage."

Investigators interviewed him as well. Palma says helping an officer was instinctual.

"It's something you have to do you know," Palma said.

The BART officer was treated and released from the hospital, officials said. The suspect was in surgery and is in stable condition. The officer who was shot had just under five years of experience and the officer who opened fire had about 10 years of experience. Both were wearing body cameras.

BART officer, suspect wounded in gunfire, body later found near Hayward Station

By Rachel Swan and Bob Egelko
Updated 8:54 pm, Friday, December 25, 2015

A Christmas morning shooting at the Hayward BART station became a homicide investigation by evening, when BART police discovered a body in the back of a U-Haul truck associated with the suspect.

Twenty-seven year old Charles Goetting shot a BART police officer in the arm shortly after 11 a.m., police said. A second officer opened fire and wounded the Goetting, who was airlifted to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.

The two officers encountered Goetting during a routine patrol near the parking structure by Hayward station. According to Deputy BART Police Chief Jeffrey Jennings, they saw a man walking away from a U-Haul with a broken rear window. They stopped the man, Goetting, and decided to search him after learning he was on probation for burglary, selling drugs and gun possession.

Goetting cooperated at first, but when the officers asked him to put his arms above his head, he reached inside his waistband and pulled out a handgun, Jennings said.

As one of the officers ducked, Goetting fired, striking the officer in the arm, Jennings said.

The second officer then shot Goetting several times, Jennings said. He said the suspect was given CPR by the Hayward Fire Department and then flown to Eden Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and was reported to be in stable condition.

The wounded officer was treated at the same hospital and released, said hospital spokeswoman Stacey Wells.

“He’s in good condition,“ said BART police Lt. Gil Lopez.

Hours later, police said they found the body of an unidentified man in the back of the U-Haul, according to BART spokeswoman Denisse Gonzalez.

The officers’ names were not disclosed. Jennings said the injured officer has been with the BART police for less than five years, while the second officer has more than 10 years of service.

Jennings said Goetting had addresses in San Ramon, Concord and Antioch. The deputy chief said the handgun used by the suspect was stolen and that the license plates on the parked U-Haul had been switched. Officers searched the vehicle and found a backpack that held a BB gun, a ski mask and burglary tools, Jennings said.

He said the two officers “could tell during the initial contact that he was nervous and fidgety.”

Officers were reviewing videos of the incident late Friday, Jennings said.

Hayward: U-Haul homicide suspect charged with shooting at BART police officers

By Malaika Fraley mfraley@bayareanewsgroup.com

HAYWARD -- Prosecutors on Wednesday filed attempted murder charges against a San Ramon native accused of shooting at two BART officers, injuring one, on Christmas Day and who is the prime suspect in the killing of a man found dead in a U-Haul truck at the Hayward BART station.

Charles Kyle Goetting, 27, remained hospitalized Wednesday with at least one gunshot wound he suffered when an officer returned fire at the Hayward BART station on Dec. 25. His arraignment on felony charges that include attempted murder of a peace officer and assault on a peace officer with a semi-automatic firearm is pending.

Prosecutors have not yet considered charges against Goetting related to the homicide of 40-year-old Bay Point resident Jason Anderson. Anderson's body was found in a U-Haul truck that Goetting was allegedly pushing into a parking stall on Christmas Day when officers first approached him in the parking garage of the Hayward BART station. Authorities say the investigation into Anderson's death remains ongoing.

According to court documents, Officers Carlos Dazhan and Timothy Eads approached Goetting around 11:15 a.m. as a possible burglary suspect because the U-Haul truck had a broken rear window. Once they began searching him because he is on probation, Goetting allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired five shots at the officers.

Eads was shot in the arm, and was released from the hospital that night. Authorities have not said where or how many times that Dazhan shot Goetting.

Anderson's body was found as authorities were investigating the officer-involved shooting. Authorities have not released his cause of death.
