Adenovirus-36

Has anyone researched this? It causes fat cells to multiply or something strange. It is being said that obesity can be a disease and some people don't lose weight because of this. Does anyone know anything about this? I know people who hardly eat at all and don't lose and even keep gaining. Can this be why? Does anyone know anything about this?

Obesity linked to cold-like virus

Experiments find that human germ causes fat increase in mice and chickens

ASSOCIATED PRESS

July 27 — A cold-like virus may cause obesity, new experiments suggest. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin in Madison have found that mice and chickens infected with a common human virus put on much more fat than uninfected animals.

Researchers do not know yet how adenovirus-36 causes obesity. Infected animals did not eat more than uninfected ones, suggesting that the virus decreases energy expenditure rather than increasing appetite.

THEY HAVE also discovered that the same virus is more prevalent among overweight people, a strong indication that it may also cause obesity in humans. In four experiments, the Wisconsin researchers inoculated chickens and mice with adenovirus-36, a member of a viral family that includes about 50 strains.

Most adenoviruses cause colds, diarrhea or pinkeye. After several months, animals infected with adenovirus-36 weighed only 7 percent more on average than those without the virus, but their bodies contained more than twice as much fat. “This is the first human virus that has been shown to cause obesity in animals,” said Nikhil Dhurandhar, one of the study’s authors.

It is also the first virus the researchers looked at, raising the possibility that other human viruses may also cause obesity. Dhurandhar and his colleagues picked adenovirus-36 simply because little is known about it and the strain is relatively easy to work with.

Their study is being published in the August issue of the International Journal of Obesity. “It raises a host of very interesting questions,” said John Foreyt, an obesity expert at Baylor College of Medicine. “If it really does play a role I think it’s a real breakthrough.” The latest results do not indicate that all obesity is caused by viruses, Foreyt said.

But they strongly suggest that infection plays an important role. “There’s just so much more we need to do on this before we can say anything definitive,” said Richard Atkinson, a University of Wisconsin professor and author of the study. Unpublished studies in humans show that 20 percent to 30 percent of overweight people are infected with adenovirus-36, compared to about 5 percent of the lean population.

Experts are not completely surprised by the Wisconsin group’s results. In the last few years, they have found signs that many chronic health conditions are caused by infections. Three different microbes are thought to contribute to clogged arteries. Long thought to be a product of high stress and a poor diet, ulcers are now known to be caused by the bacterium Helicobacter pylori.

In addition, several animal viruses are already known to cause obesity in both animals and humans. But adenovirus-36 is the first human virus known to cause an increase in fat. Researchers do not know yet how adenovirus-36 causes obesity. Infected animals did not eat more than uninfected ones, suggesting that the virus decreases energy expenditure rather than increasing appetite.

And here is another item with a link to testing for the virus. Very interesting.

Can a Virus Make You Fat?

10/11/2004 11:00 PM

It's called the human Adenovirus-36; it causes extreme weight gain and it is as contagious as the common cold. The virus is being investigated by doctors in Virginia.

When injected into animals, lab experiments show rapid weight gain. However, the cholesterol and triglycerides levels in the animals actually lowered. While doctors cannot inject Adenovirus-36 into humans, they speculate that 30-percent of obese people actually carry what they call the "fat" virus. Doctors say the virus is contagious; however, it's not spread by obese people. Rather, the virus is carried by underweight or thin people.

There is an online test to find out if you have the "fat" virus; just visit the website listed below.

OMG. Just another ploy to get into the deep pockets of the rich :sheep: :sheep: :sheep: :sheep: :sheep: :sheep: :shr: . It never ends. It also states on this site that diet and exercise and a healthy life style is needed to adjust your weight. It never ends. :shr: :screw:

Well, Reader's digest (which was a gift to me) had an article that had the Adenovirus-36 in it. It is amazing I even found it because most of their digest is advertising. I was however very glad to find it. But I bought a puppy several years ago and he started gaining weight. I come from a skinny family. Everyone in my family has always been lean and mean. ): Just joking. Lean but not mean! This dog is a fat dog. I have never had a fat dog. He just IS fat. I put him on a diet and like to have starved him to death and he did not lose a pound! But anyway he bit me. Just playing but it drew blood. Then I started gaining weight! Now it is weird, I can't lose even if I diet. I think he has the adenovirus-36. And now I have it. Weird!

Herb Mountain, I don't mean to come down on you, I really don't but that was a lot of sheep you put on there. I really appreciate all of your posts and think they help people, not sheeple. LOL However have you researched this strange virus? Being as a lot of herbs do wondrous things is it beyond your comprehension that some virus can do non-wondrous things? After all, there are virus things. You know there are things that exist that we are all trying to get ahead of and figure out. Have you ever known anyone who did not eat but still did not lose weight? You must be real skinny! LOL! And if you are that is great! Happy for you!

Most weight gain now-a-days is caused by improper metabolism and malfunctioning thyroid, adrenals, etc. There are many causes of this and viral can be one of the cause, but not the main one. Candida is a known cause and is epidemic in the population. A wonderful anti-viral supplement that is safe for daily long term use is OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT - comes in capsules and liquids. The research on it was done in Israel and is very impressive. FDA does not want you to know about this one! Great for Hep C, HIV, Virals - flu's, Epstein Barr, etc.

Must be taken for at least 6 months to a year as it helps interfere with viral reproduction.

I was wondering about that as I read. The article (one of the articles posted) also said there were other viruses known to cause obesity in animals and humans. I suppose in starving times that might be a somewhat good thing, but in the meanwhile -- I tried elderberry when I started to come down with something a few days ago, and it seemed to work. I'll try it for this, and see if it works. Maybe we can have our own study, LOL!!

I wonder if you can live off of elderberry. At least for a while. Lets see.. how much would that cost? Sambucol is very expensive! I find myself treating the stuff like gold. A little bottle is 8 dollars! That is about enough for one day is it not! Considering you have to take four doses of two teaspoons a day for the intensive treatment. Well there are four ounces in a bottle. What does that work out to be day wise? How about if you just take 2 tsp. a day? What does that work out to be? Actually I quit taking it when my cold went away and so I can not be a part of this study unless I start back on it. I have a full bottle here in front of me that is supposed to be in my preps for tstf type situation! But I want to take it to continue the weight loss study here! LOL! OKAY I will continue taking it! I will start on the new bottle. But should I take the intensive course specified on the bottle? Or should I make the bottle last longer by taking the suggested daily usage which is only two tsp. a day? I think I shall try the two Tsp. a day instead of the intensive use 2 tsp. FOUR times a day. Okay two tsp. a day will be the trial! But what about Thanksgiving? Hey wait just a minute!! Thanksgiving, is the time that everyone brings their favorite dishes! It will be a WASTE of Sambucol to try this during this time. I cannot disappoint the family by not trying their favorite dishes! I would be a scourge! They would never get over it. Not to mention I must taste the wonderful things I contribute to make sure they are okay. If I do not contribute then I am double scourge! Shall we wait to do this wonderful test?

It has everything you need to know, including where to get the dried elderberries. I've been making it by the half-gallon with Bacardi rum. I got a bunch of amber glass bottles and I'm handing it out for flu prevention. I haven't tried making it with brandy yet, but it's on my list of things to do! :spns:

Oh, and you can include me in your study. ;)

I have been taking two teaspoons a day. I am sure that is probably not enough but I have to do it! Once I order my berries I will be able to take more. I feel like- just a feeling- I should be taking at least five or six teaspoons a day. To over ride living with this dog that is so fat and getting fatter and surely has the virus! This dog is so sweet though! But so fat! But hey HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYBODY!!!!! Every Body!! I am making two smoked turkeys! And some homegrown mustards to take to the get together! My mother is making porkroast and forgotten cookies and dressing. She might also make cornbread to go with the mustards. My sister is baking a ham and making macaroni (the good one) and other things. It is on and on for the good food! I hope every one has a great Thanksgiving! We WILL continue the trial study! We MUST! It is folly that the study dialogue has meet up with Thanksgiving! Folly! It is the fickle finger of fate. But we will overcome!!!!!!
