A Common Sense Proposal

I think that we should have unified voting hours (at least for Presidential Elections). Polls throughout the country should be open for 15 hours; the Eastern time zone hours should be 9:00AM to 12:00 midnight, Central - 8:00AM - 11PM, Mountain 7:00AM - 10PM, and Pacific 6:00AM - 9:00 PM. This will allow for the poles to close at the same time throughout the country. Networks should not be allowed to broadcast the result of any Presidential race until the polls close on the West Coast - Midnight Eastern time (Alaska and Hawaii can use their existing hours). It is unfair, in my opinion, for a network to call a race in a state on the East Coast at 8:00 PM, while people on the West Coast are still voting. If a landslide is developing, West Coast voters will be discouraged from voting.

It's going to end up being the same numbers no matter what so I see no reason for this.

Of course some folks think those on west coast will change their mind if they see one side winning. IMO though that would not change my mind on who I wanted.
