9 water pipes rupture in aftermath of East Bay earthquake Monday

In the aftermath of a 4.0-magnitude earthquake that rattled the East Bay on Monday, nine water pipes broke near the epicenter, the East Bay Municipal Utility District reported.

Once the earthquake hit about 6:49 a.m., five of the nine pipes — constructed from cast iron, which can be susceptible to seismic ground movement — broke in Oakland, according to EBMUD spokesperson Abby Figueroa. No ruptures occurred in Berkeley pipes.

“It’s hard to say specifically if the earthquake caused them,” Figueroa said, noting that the earthquake could have just exacerbated small leaks.

EBMUD officials said about two to three main breaks occur on an average day, mostly because some of the pipes are reaching the end of their 75- to 100-year life expectancy.

“None of (the breaks) were severe yesterday … compared to what’s possible in our service area,” Figueroa said. “While there were more than normal, none of them were especially large.”

According to Figueroa, the district repaired most pipe ruptures within eight hours and nearly all within 24 hours.

Crews Scrambling To Repair Several East Bay Water Mains Ruptured By 4.0 Quake

August 18, 2015 7:02 AM

OAKLAND (CBS SF) — More than half a dozen water mains ruptured in the East Bay on Monday, mostly in and around the areas affected by a magnitude 4.0 earthquake Monday morning, according to the East Bay Municipal Water District.

“We had at least seven high priority main breaks and six are in the strong shake zone or within half a mile of the fault line,” District spokeswoman Tracie Morales-Noisy said.

“On average we receive two to three main breaks per day, so this is slightly more than double what we receive on any given Monday,” she added. “This has our crews working very hard.”

At least five of the breaks were located in Oakland and all of them were older cast iron pipes, according to Morales-Noisy. She said the incident serves as a reminder of the infrastructure hazards of a major seismic event like the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989.

“We could see hundreds or thousands of main breaks, and it would have an enormous impact,” Morales-Noisy said. “We recommend that customers have a minimum of three to seven days worth of water in their home in the event of a major water emergency.”

She advised area residents to keep at least one to two gallons of water per day for each person in the home.

“It doesn’t have to be a major emergency, it could be just a main break,” Morales-Noisy said. “Things are unpredictable, and you never know when you’ll need a water supply.”

So earthquake proof buildings but not water?!!!

An interview I heard this afternoon in the car went into the fact that the local utility is behind in replacing old pipes, many are over a century old. The interviewee also stated that they were experimenting with pipe technology from Japan that's specifically meant to be seismic resistant.

That's why you prep....to be prepared for any emergency, especially if you live in California.......food, water and lights. Most folks own BBQs for cooking; just need to keep a couple extra tanks of propane/butane on hand.

Saved, to glorify God.
Let's see, two gallons you say for each person, for 7 days, average four in family thats 56 gallons of water ( "JUST IN CASE") sitting around in the small apartment, in gallon jugs, THAT BIODEGRADE AND LEAK, YEP, that is a suggestion that ordinary people will just ignore. Maybe they should sell gallon jugs of water that DO NOT BIODEGRADE AND LEAK?

Yes, good thing our immediate (Berkeley) neighborhoods, South and East of UC Berkeley and Clark Kerr Campuses , are undergoing extensive upgrades to sewer/water system.

Many of the structures here were built following the '06 Quake. Our hundred y/o house was originally built back then with gas lighting. Most of that era were built of old growth redwood that is strongly bug/rot resistant but, as the Oakland-Berkeley Hills Fire reminded the world, quite susceptible to fire.

BTW, regarding prepping fuel sources - you want to be EXTREMELY careful in more built-up neighborhoods if you're thinking of storing propane tanks.

This thread brings up a valid point for the rest of us. Significant earthquakes can severely impact water supply lines, but the problem doesn't just stop with immediate repairs. Once the supply lines get fixed and repressurized, that is often enough to disrupt nearby supply lines that were marginally damaged in the original event, but now break due to the newly pressurized system. And this can literally go on, and on, for months until you run out of marginally damaged pipes.

To update all the infrastructural in this Country may cost 100's of billions of dollars if not even a Trillion.
