ENVR 7.9 Earthquake Southwest of Sumatra Indonesia

JAKARTA (Reuters) - A powerful and shallow earthquake of magnitude 8.1 struck off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter was 808 km (502 miles) southwest of Padang, USGS said. It was 10 km (six miles) deep.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties but the shallower a quake, the more likely it is to cause damage. USGS originally put the magnitude at 8.2.

Indonesia, badly hit by the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004, straddles the so-called "Pacific Ring of Fire", a highly seismically active zone where different plates on the earth's crust meet and create a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes.

It's a sad day when the earth has experienced so many monster quakes that NPR referred to this one as just "very large".

Nothing for North America, no New Madrid, no Cascadia, and no San Andreas.

Maybe that incoming planetary object, will be able to get things stirred up for North America.

What time would it have occurred Pacific? My cat was going bonkers last night, just utterly nutso. Then he wanted out at 10PM. He's rarely outside for more than 15 minutes at night, especially when it's cold. He didn't come back until 6:30 this morning. I walked and drove all over the neighborhood looking for him in the wee hours, calling and he never came out, I have no idea where he was.

Suspicious0bservers said a few days ago that we would be going into high quake possibility and here we are.

Actually there have been gobs of tiny quakes in the areas mentioned and some of us would like it to stay that way. tiny quakes means the pressure is being released.

I was up with the dogs from about 3:30 a.m. When the quake news came through, thought they'd let me go back to bed now.... no more begging to go outside, and they did.

I suppose it could be wrong, but according to this earthquake calculator (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/topics/calculator.php) it would take over thirty THOUSAND (about 31,623) earthquakes of magnitude 3.5 to equal a single earthquake of magnitude 8.0. The 8.0 would release over five MILLION (about 5,623,413) times the energy of a single 3.5. I think you have to get into those "slow earthquakes" taking place continuously over multiple years before that "releasing pressure" thing actually accomplishes much.

Or not. God works on His own terms.
