1988 Ford LTD Transmission issues....

I have a freind who owns a 1988 Ford LTD sedan with some transmission issues. It no longer has reverse, it just died one day, no grinding no nothing, its not the transmission fluid, its not the linkage. Question I have is how much would a new either c4 series or c6 series transmission cost, or how much a rebuild is, or if anyone has one of these beasties laying around, he does not have the money to buy a new car so fixing is it.

The car itself is in pretty good shape for a older ford, few issues but it runs solid. Yes it has the 3.8 liter v-6 in it with electronic fuel injection.

Thank you very much.

It's been years, but when I was doing R&R at a tranny shop those were fairly cheap to rebuild, $600-800. Call around though, as I've said it's been a while, maybe it's cheaper now? We could hope, right? :) Seriously, the best thing your friend could do is call around and get a few estimates, that would give them a much better idea as price will probably vary with different areas...

I have a newly-rebuilt C6 in a 1995 E350 van (gas 300 cu. in. inline six).

It had exactly 22 miles on it before the van had the left front side hit and got parked. I have $1100 in the trans rebuild and new torque converter. If you can use it (bellhousing bolt pattern?), I'll sell for half that.

I have all receipts to document the overhaul.

I will look up the bolt pattern but I do beleve that a c-6 can be put in a LTD. I will keep your offer DEFINATLY in mind :)

What tranny is in the car now? AOD? AODE (4R70W)? E4OD (4R100) or E4OD-E? AXO or AXOD-E?

If you install a replacement trans that is not the same model as the original, you will likely have to replace, alter, or have made custom:

• the driveshaft,

• the driveshaft yoke

• the rear U-Joint must be correctly sized for differential yoke

• the crossmember and/or trans mount,

• the shift linkage,

• the ECM hookups

• transmission tunnel may need to be altered or resized

Why not pull the old tranny out, take it down to the tranny shop for a rebuild, and reinstall yourself? Make sure to obtain a rebuilt torque converter, and that the torque converter is seated properly into the front pump of the tranny BEFORE tightening the tranny to the engine block.

Also, if you do your own R&R on tranny, make sure to flush out trans cooler lines with spray carb cleaner and compressed air -- use whole can to assure complete removal of any old tranny fluid or other gunk that may be stuck inside cooler or lines.

I also made a mistake on the year, its a 1984. Again i was posting at 3 am, with only a half of a brain cell functioning. Then again its not my car, why should I remember information about it :shr:
