RENO, Nevada — A powerful Sierra storm packing hurricane-force winds sent huge trees crashing into power lines, leaving more than 20,000 people without power Friday along the range's eastern front stretching about 100 miles from south of Carson City to north of Reno.
Winds gusting up to 134 mph over ridge tops early Friday closed ski resorts around Lake Tahoe, snapped dozens of trees more than 2 feet-thick, downed power lines and sparked a series of small brush fires.
There were no immediate reports of injuries. But there were numerous reports of property damage, mostly broken windows, bent garage doors and flying roof shingles in Douglas County, where winds gusted up to 90 mph at noon Friday near Gardnerville.
Crews were responding to "numerous calls of down power lines and flying debris from the current wind event," Douglas County Sheriff's Sgt. Pat Brooks said.
A power pole fell on a car in Carson City, a 30-inch tree was blown onto a house in South Lake Tahoe, California, and an outbuilding was split in half when a 2-foot thick pine tree was uprooted about 60 miles northwest of Reno in Graeagle, California, the National Weather Service said.
Two trucks also were reported to have overturned in high winds on a state highway near there between Susanville and Janesville, California.
East of Reno in rural Lyon County, sheriff's deputies said they were responding to multiple car crashes on U.S. Highway 95-A east of Yerington, where blowing dust reduced visibility to less than a half mile.
The biggest single power outage was in Susanville, where PG&E estimated as many as 10,000 customers could be without electricity into Friday night. More than 13,000 outages were reported around Reno, Sparks and Carson City, according to NV Energy.
A high-wind warning remained in effect until 4:30 a.m. Saturday for most of the region around Lake Tahoe, where wind-whipped waves were reported as high as 7 feet tall.
North of the lake in Truckee, California, authorities said they had contained a small brush fire sparked by a power substation in Truckee, which left much of the downtown area without power for several hours.
Police and fire officials were investigating the fire that started about 9:30 a.m., said Steven Poncelet, spokesman for the Truckee Donner Public Utility District. "There are no structures or neighborhoods being threatened at this time. The fire is contained by fire crews," he told the Sierra Sun.
