SAN DIEGO -- Border Patrol agents in San Ysidro uncovered an illegal smuggling scheme involving a cloned construction vehicle and ten people crammed inside a false tool box, officials said.

Around noon Thursday, agents spotted the pickup, which was disguised as a vehicle from Kiewit Corporation, on Dairy Mart Road. Kiewit Corporation is a company currently working on a large border construction project.

The vehicle parked briefly in a secluded spot along the border fence. Officers ran a quick license plate check, which revealed the registered owner was a San Diego resident, not Kiewit Corporation.

When agents attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped away, officials said. Agents successfully deployed a controlled tire deflation device, eventually causing the truck to come to a stop.

The driver fled on foot and was later arrested. He is facing smuggling charges.

Agents inspected the truck and discovered one illegal immigrant in the cab and 10 more crammed inside a fake tool box in the bed of the truck.

In response to tighter border security efforts, officials say, smugglers are resorting to more sophisticated and dangerous methods to bring humans, drugs and other contraband into the United States
