Russia Discloses The Iran Ultimatum:

In what can only be seen as raising the rhetoric bar on the timing, scale, and seriousness of the Iran 'situation', Kommersant is reporting that "Tehran has one last chance" as US Secretary of State Clinton asks her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov to relay the message to Iranian leaders.

If this 'last chance' is wasted an attack will happen in months as diplomats noted that the probability of an Israel/US attack on Iran is now a specific 'when' instead of an indefinite 'if'. The sentiment is best summarized by a quote from inside the meeting "The invasion will happen before year’s end. The Israelis are de facto blackmailing Obama.

They’ve put him in this interesting position – either he supports the war or loses the support of the Jewish lobby". Russian diplomats, as Russia Today points out, criticized the 'last chance' rhetoric as unprofessional suggesting "those tempted to use military force should restrain themselves - a war will not solve any problems, but create a million new ones."

Report:
U.S. asked Russia to warn Iran of
'last chance' to avoid military strike

Clinton reportedly told her Russian counterpart to rely message to Tehran that it must engage in
talks with world powers or face a military strike within months, according to Russian daily Kommersant.

By Haaretz
http://www.haaretz.com/news/middle-...last-chance-to-avoid-military-strike-1.418613

The United States has asked Russia to deliver an ultimatum to Iran, warning the Islamic Republic that it has one last chance for talks before a military strike, the Kommersant daily quoted Russian diplomats as saying on Wednesday.

According to the Russian newspaper, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton asked her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in New York on Monday to tell Tehran that it has one last chance to solve the conflict peacefully by making progress in the talks with the P5+1 group - United States, Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany. Otherwise, an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities will occur within months, the diplomats said.

The report in Kommersant did not give further details regarding the kind of military action the U.S. was threatening, but quoted Russian diplomats at the UN as saying they believe that it is a "matter of when, not if" Israel would strike Iran's nuclear facilities.

Last week, Clinton said that there is still space for diplomacy to resolve Iran's nuclear standoff with the West shortly after European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton announced that the P5+1 group agreed to restart talks with Iran. A time and venue of the talks has yet to be set.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a series of television interviews, said last week that an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities could take place within months.

"We're not standing with a stopwatch in hand," he said. "It's not a matter of days or weeks, but also not of years. The result must be removal of the threat of nuclear weapons in Iran's hands."

Netanyahu met with U.S. President Barack Obama last week and tried to pressure him to harden his tone on Iran.

Netanyahu told Obama that he had not yet made any decision about whether to attack Iran's nuclear facilities, though he made it clear he did not rule out such a move in the future. In statements to the press both before and after the meeting Netanyahu said Israel has the sovereign right to defend itself against Iran.

Russia Asked to Warn Iran of 'Last Chance'

The US has asked Russia to tell Iran that upcoming nuclear talks
with the major powers are a 'last chance' to avoid a military strike.

The United States has asked Russia to warn Iran that negotiations slated for April are a last chance to avoid military strikes against its nuclear program.

Russia’s Kommersant reported Wednesday that US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that the upcoming talks between Iran and the five major powers plus Germany were its "last chance."

“She asked her Russian colleague to make this clear to the Iranian authorities” the newspaper reported, adding the exchange occured after Monday’s UN Security Council meeting on Syria in New York.

Kommersant said a precise date and location for the talks is still being decided, but Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu said last month the discussions are expected to begin in April at the latest.

The report gave no further details on the kind of military action Tehran faced, but Russian diplomats at the United Nations told the paper they believe it is a “matter of when, not if” a military strike occurs against Iran.

Israel and the United States have both stipulated that the use of force to stop Iran's bid for nuclear weapons remains "on the table," and demand Iran halt its uranium enrichment activities.

The International Atomic Energy Association has issued two reports in recent months indicating Iran has sought - and continues to seek - nuclear technology that has solely military applications.

It has also raised pointed questions about Iran's push to enrich its uranium stockpiles to 20% purity, a key jumping off point should Iran make a dash to enrich its uranium to the 93% needed for nuclear weapons.

Iran says it is enriching uranium to 20% in order to research medical isotopes, but proliferation experts note that Tehran is enriching far more uranium than is necessary for that purpose and does not have a sufficiently advanced medical research sector to support the claim.

Russia has maintained that military action against Iran risks "catastrophic" consequences and has said that the crisis must be solved diplomatically.

However, Kommersant said the Russian military was now at a state of “mobilized readiness” to protect the country from spillover from a conflict erupting, like an influx of refugees into neighboring Azerbaijan.

Washington's warning by way of Moscow comes amid mixed signals from the Obama administration. Obama has signalled to Tehran he is not interested in military action, but top officials have testified to lawmakers a stike is in the planning stages.

The United States and Iran have not had diplomatic relations since 7 April 1981. The US broke off relations following the seige of its embassy in Tehran following the 1979 Islamic revolution, in which 52 US diplomats were held hostage for 444 days.

Washington saw the incident as a violation of the centuries-old principle of international law that granted diplomats immunity from arrest and diplomatic compounds sovereignty in the territory of the host country they occupy.

Instead, the United States operates an "interests section" in the Swiss Embassy in Tehran, while Iran maintains a similiar section in the Pakistani embassy in Washington DC.

Tyler might want to be a little more careful with his headlines. There is a big difference between a military attack on Iran's nuclear facilities and an invasion. Nobody else who is reporting on this that I've seen is calling for an invasion of Iran if Tehran fails to cooperate.

The intense and prolonged media hype about all this has been a psyop, imo, to habituate the world to be ready and to accept it when the war finally happens. It's a done deal. yada, yada...

Yeah, ND, I see what you're saying. I just think it's a bit absurd to tell the country we are about to bomb, "Hey, look out below!"

And, if we do, using the Russians who have equipped Iran with their radar systems, etc., seems disingenuous on the part of the Obama administration.

It's like putting red noses on all our war planes and giving away the exact way points for their missions before they've taken off the carrier.

Oh, well, maybe this administration will do that too.

Actually using the Soviets is a GOOD move since the Iranians might actually LISTEN to their benefactors

U.S. And Iranian Strategic Competition: The Proxy Cold War in the Levant, Egypt and Jordan

By Aram Nerguizian
Mar 12, 2012

US competition with Iran has become the equivalent of a game of three-dimensional chess, but a game where each side can modify at least some of the rules with each move. It is also a game that has been going on for some three decades. It is clear that it is also a game that is unlikely to be ended by better dialog and mutual understanding, and that Iran’s version of “democracy” is unlikely to change the way it is played in the foreseeable future.

The Burke Chair at CSIS is preparing a detailed analysis of the history and character of this competition as part of a project supported by the Smith Richardson Foundation. This has led to the preparation of a new draft report entitled “US and Iranian Competition: The Proxy Cold War in the Levant, Egypt and Jordan”

This report is available on the CSIS website at: http://csis.org/files/publication/120312_Iran_VIII_Levant.pdf

Iran’s efforts to expand its regional influence in the Levant, Egypt and Jordan are a key aspect of its strategic competition with the US. Nearly twenty years after Israel’s invasion of Lebanon in 1982, and five years after the 2006 Israeli-Hezbollah War, the US and its allies continue to struggle with the realities of Iran’s growing influence in the region and its use of proxy and asymmetric warfare. The Islamic Republic has developed strong ties with Syria and non-state actors in the region, including the Lebanese Shi’a group Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas Islamist movement in what Iranian and Syrian leaders have dubbed the “Resistance Axis.” Iran continues to exploit Arab-Israeli tensions in ways that make it an active barrier to a lasting Arab-Israeli peace, while the US must deal with Arab hostility to its strategic partnership with Israel. At the same time, both the US and Iran face new uncertainties in dealing with Egypt, Syria, and the wave of unrest in the Arab world.

At the same time, both the US and Iran face an unprecedented level of policy instability in the Levant, and the rest of the Middle East and North Africa, that affects every aspect of their regional competition. At present, no one can predict the outcome in any given case. Even the short term impact of changes in regimes is not predictable, nor is how they will affect the underlying drivers of regional tensions. It is particularly dangerous to ignore the risk of replacing one form of failed governance with another one, and the prospect of years of further political instability or upheavals.

Syria has been a challenge for US policy-makers for decades. Yet the current round of instability is unprecedented and the US is not likely to enact a coherent strategy in the short term. This in turn informs the future pace and form of competition with Iran over Syria.

While Lebanon has been relatively stable during the current period of upheaval, there are real risks of instability as well as opportunities to manage security politics in the Levant that the US should not ignore.

As this report shows, Israel too is an arena for US-Iranian competition and the recent cycle of instability will remain critical to how both countries develop their bilateral relationship and security ties. The place and role of the Palestinians in US policy and competition with Iran are part and parcel of US-Iranian competition over Israel.

Lastly, US policy towards Egypt and Jordan are driven by a number of common factors that have impacted whether or not these two key US allies become exposed to Iranian influence and interference.
This report is a working draft, part of a comprehensive survey of US and Iranian competition made possible through the funding of the Smith Richardson Foundation, and which is to be published as an electronic book in early March. Comments and suggestions would be most helpful. They should be sent to Anthony H. Cordesman at acordesman@gmail.com.

Other draft chapters and reports in this series include:
1. Introduction
2. Types and Levels of Competition - This chapter looks at the various arenas in which Iran and the U.S. compete for influence.
3. Iran and the Gulf Military Balance - This chapter looks at Iran’s Military forces in detail, and the balance of forces in the Gulf Region.

Obama is a man of his word. If Iran does not listen this time, Obama will give them their VERY LAST CHANCE in 6 months. If that fails, he will issue them their FINAL LAST CHANCE if elected next fall.

"THEY" have put poor Obambams in this position???

Last time I checked, it's the IRANIANS who are developing enriched plutonium.

It's the IRANIANS who are VOWING to destroy Israel.

It's the IRANIANS who say, while they're annihilating Israel, they'll lob a few bombs and set off internal terror cells our way in the US.

And this is all ISRAEL's fault????

And THAT is blackmail?

Oh, yeah, I get it---

We have ONE dependable, democratic ally in the Middle East that is NOT ruled by a dictatorship of Islamic opportunists at best and terrorists at worst who do NOT have OUR best interests at heart---Israel.

And the PROPER way to treat an ALLY is---stab them in the back, then criticize them for saying ouch. No, instead they should be meekly saying, "Thank you, sir. May I have another?"

Yeah, that's the way to treat ALLIES---of course.

And then, said ally is supposed to lay down and die quietly, without causing any problems for our dear leader.

And the rest of the Jewish people are supposed to just be okay with watching their people die.

Sure. I can see that.

Bad Israe!. Bad, bad Israel! How DARE you want to live instead of die?

There will not be a war with Iran unless they start it and they aren't that stupid. A pre-emptive attack on Iran will be the greatest blunder in US military history and it will end very badly for the US and Israel. It will also make both countries pariahs in the world.

mt4design,

All valid points. Likewise, look at how Panetta treated U.S. Marines in Afghanistan yesterday. There is a MASSIVE example of how the Administration of The Usurper has broken faith (it never had any, for it has no honor) with the American warfighter. During the last weekend, The Usurper said that he was "generally proud" of the troops. Remember too, how vast numbers of votes cast in the last general and off-year elections were "lost?" The Usurper, and the Libtard/Progressive/Communist fifth column of "useful idiots," are hellbent on destroying the U.S. from within. Cannot anyone spell, T-R-E-A-S-O-N? TREASON? America is doomed by it's own delusions, and its inability to think rationally.

OA, disgusted with those that want to maintain the status quo, out...

Just think how history would have been different (and much less bloody and tragic) if Hitler had been taken out before he conquered most of Europe. Just think. IMHO waiting until Iran hits Israel is a terribly bad idea.
