Remote Paramedical pain in the ass
At the House
Just before the house Jonas darted ahead of Petra so he could park out of the way and open the barn doors for her to pull the truck straight inside. He just hoped Silas had everything out of the way and the spot set up they had talked about yesterday when he left.
In front of the barn, off to one side, were parked most of the vehicles. Dang! It looked like a used car lot around here these days! All the SUVs, the work truck, Henrik’s jeep, all out here to make room for the trailers and the trucks with campers to be inside the barn alongside enough working space for Petra’s truck and whatever other thing was being worked on. He found a spot next to Henrik’s jeep and hopped out. He met Petra in the driveway. She rolled down the window as he walked up.
“I’ll get the door so you can drive right inside. There is supposed to be enough room for you to work on this and the new trailer. It should already be inside. Silas told me yesterday they were unloading everything into the back of the barn so we could sort through and plan which ones to do after you get done with your stuff.”
“Sounds good.”
Jonas noticed Petra sounded distracted or disconnected. He spoke quieter and softer now.
“You OK? Did you want me to run up and grab some clothes for you? We should probably have Amber check you out.”
She shook her head as she answered him. “No, I’ll be fine. If you could grab the jeans off the back of the door in my room that would be great. I just want to get inside and get to work.”
“Twenty minutes looking at things and planning what you need and how many helpers, then you get your ass to lunch, get some food in you. AFTER lunch, you and however many helpers can come out here and do shit. Anyone you don’t need will be working other projects. I think Sofia has been on Ivar’s ass about getting the radios in, so he will need to look at what to put in this truck.”
“I just ate not that long ago.”
“No, you didn’t. You need food, not a snack. Your tank was past empty. You need to fill it up. All you got was something to limp you along until we got here. Don’t make me sic Amber and Sofia on you for your own health.” He said with a grin to lessen the sting of his threat.
“OK. I promise.”
“You better. Twenty minutes, and I’ll be back down in a few moments with your pants.”
Jonas saw a faint smile at his comment. He’ll take it. He darted over to open the barn doors. Inside, he saw they were busy while they were gone. Stacks of boxes. Rolls of hoses and who knows what all were against the back wall and a space was cleared around and beside the newest trailer of the group. A large empty space was right in front of the workbench for Petra to pull straight in. As soon as the truck was inside the barn, he shut the door.
“I’ll be right back with that stuff” he called over his shoulder to Petra as he headed for the inside door. As he headed that way, he saw Ivar, or at least he thought it was Ivar, under the dash of Silas’s truck. Jennifer was in the passenger seat, handing tools to him as he worked.
“How’s it going, kidlet?”
Jennifer looked over at Jonas. “Great! Mr. Ivar is teaching me new swear words!”
He glared with mock fierceness at her. “ and what are the rules for swear words?”
“I can learn them, but I’m not supposed to use them. I know, Daddy.” She smiled.
“She helping, Ivar?”
“She’s a great help. This shit is harder than ninth-grade Algebra with only nine toes!” came Ivar’s muffled voice from under the dash.
Jonas darted across to the house and in the back door. Once inside he saw Sofia in the kitchen talking with Amber and Silas.
“It’s about time you got your ass back. We were just about to go looking for you.” Amber exclaimed before Jonas could say a word.
“Yeah, I know. There was a bit of trouble last night.”
“Problems with the trucks?” Silas was suddenly worried.
“No, people problems. The mechanic showed up and tried to claim possession of the trucks. Things got physical about the time I got there to defuse the whole thing.”
“Is Petra hurt?” Amber was instantly trying to get her mind into trauma doctor mode.
“I don’t think so, or at least not that she wants to admit. I think more scared than hurt. She also ran her sugar levels out to zero. We had to stop so I could get some back in her so she could think well enough to drive. Please don’t tell her I told you guys. She’s embarrassed about it. I just know we need to worry about making sure everybody keeps their levels up with all the work and stress we have right now and at her size, she is the canary of the group. If she starts drooping, we need to worry about all of us.” Jonas tried to soft sell the damage to Petra, while warning the others.
“Don’t worry. I’ll take care of it. Carbs and protein for lunch should help. Lunch in half an hour.” Sofia said as she stepped back over to the stove.
Jonas looked at Silas. “What we have from the RV dealer is all we are going to get from him. That bridge is burned.”
Silas thought to ask more but knew Jonas long enough to see by his mannerisms this wasn’t the time nor place.
“I guess what we have will have to do. It’s more than we did have.”
“Yup.” Jonas said as he went up the stairs to the bedrooms.
Amber watched this exchange. She knew there was a lot they weren’t saying. She would twist Silas’ arm on this later. For now, she had to worry about Petra’s mental state after being attacked. She didn’t know how bad she was hurt or how Petra was taking it. Until she wanted to talk, she had to play dumb and just watch. Well, watch and be ready.
