CHAT How many websites that you visit are still going strong? How many have closed?

The TToL thread got me to thinking. (God knows that’s very dangerous.) I thought I’d ask: of the websites you visit/used to visit at least semi-regularly, how many are still chugging along, and how many are on death’s door or closed? Who are they? What are/were the circumstances surrounding their closure or slowdown? TB2K has been going strong since fall 1997. That’s an eternity for our kind of format (as opposed to a corporate/product sales site.) I promised to keep this place non-profit, and free to be a member. No corporate ads or selling of member info either. As I’ve said before, I like to think of this place as an oasis of thought and freedom of expression. We own the server. We own the software. The only people who could shut us down is the feds.

And it’s because of all of you. You participate, you donate, you’ve built this place and keep it strong. I pray regularly that it lasts for decades to come.

An infinite number of homeschooling websites have gone down ... this was after geocities tanked so started like a million years ago. Then everything turned into a blog and after a while that didn't work either. Fanfiction, FictionPress, ArchiveofourOwn, and a few other sites like that are still operating but not like they did in the past because of trolls trouncing the newer/younger writers and insufficient moderation to bash those perps in the head when they need it. Several prepper/skills websites used to be updated regularly but now are just there in stasis with nothing new.

My personal opinion is that twitter, tik toc, and other similar instant gratification sites have made the 'net a much shallower place.

Neither here nor there.
A lot of the art and crafting websites I used to frequent are no more... and this was mostly because the owners had died and no one wanted to take over the job of running the place.

You answered your own question.

And because of you.

There's one other board that I would think is still in business, since before 1997. But I haven't gone back for a year or two now. It's tied to a business bulletin board so there's that.

TB2K will be the last and only B.B. type site I will ever post too if something happened to you this will be it.

Please take care Dennis.

Easyboard finally bit the dust? That’s why we jumped to an owned server back in the beginning. Leska knew people inside that company and they said GET OUT NOW.
Apparently reconstituted or someone bought the URL/Site. It presents as a tool to simplify board meetings, apparently w/ minutes etc.

No interest to me so I bailed but some previous user might visit & comment.

Some special interest sites are slowed right down or moved to a pay/membership model but I think that's been coming for a while - sort of like streaming svces I guess.

abovetopsecret, GLP, 4chan, and the rest are the big centralized sites. TB2K is about the only forum left that I actually post on from the old days. I wish sites like end times roundtable were still around but they seem to have bit the dust too.

I wish I actually had more forums to hit when looking for news, I used to hang out at TOL too but as others have noted it's pretty much dead. and these days abovetopsecret isn't really looking too healthy.

There was one with a big focus on guns I can't remember the dam name. There was some sort of admin mutiny.

The survival podcast had one that was good for gardening and Perma stuff. They sort of still exist but the forum took a crap due to some software thing.

There were a couple, one called the Oil Drum? Peak oil, etc.
Homesteading today used to be decent, before they sold it.
This Blue Marble
Another that I think was something like doomerboards.com

FamilyFriendsFirearms.com?

Fairwillows

Where I am supposed to be.
Apocalypsenow.com....it seems to be gone. Oh, yeah, I vaguely remember searching for the truth on other webpages, and then I found this one.....and planted my roots. Stayed a lurker for a long time, then realized y'all were relatively harmless :geek:

I can't even remember what they were now!!! Newearth or something like that...I gave up Drudge early on. Rense.com is still a thing, I think.

Got 5 blogs across the top of my screen plus here. That's about it.

Mutter's board and TTOL were about the extent of the others.

I DID check back into GOTX and they're running into the same slowdown there as well.

Ah, 4Chan. I used to be a bit of a /b/tard back in the day. It was kind of fun, being that random. One of my favorite things to do, once a month or so, was post this pic

Jurassic-Park-Dodgson-Featured.jpg

And put the line "Dodgson. Dodgson! WE'VE GOT DODGSON HERE!!"

Then I'd see how long it took before someone said "No one cares." It seldom took more than an hour.

As for missing sites, a few webcomics I used to read are gone, never to be seen again. Forgotten the names of some of them, even.

And my first conspiracy news site, Wake Up America, vanished into the night as well decades ago.

Frugals is on its death bed, Backwoods home magazine had a forum, actually the first one I ever participated on, There was another magazine, small stock something, that had a forum, it got taken over by someone and I think its still around. The one that led me to TB I can't remember anymore, it was mostly women. Although Vlad was on there and he's the one who suggested TB. I lurked for a good while because I only had a yahoo email and then I had another approved kind and Dennis let me in. And then I only had the yahoo email and Dennis said he know me by then and let me slide on that.

Frankly there is no where else, I've been here so long most folks on here are like family. Ya'll were more concerned about me when I had covid than anyone around here except DH and my dear brother.

I come her off and on every day and would be as lost without TB as I am my brother. I pray for you Dennis everyday, and not just because you own this place.

ETa and I really like the Help thing, that way I don't usually get snarky comments.

Frugals was bought out and has new ownership. I like the new site but it doesn't have much action. Hopefully that will change soon. Back 20 years ago that was THE prepper place. As long as you didn't piss off the owner.

I miss a place called war-rifles.com. Place had great group buys. Knodwledge base was huge. Good overall place with just the right amount of conspiracy theory.

A good site if survivalistboards.com

I do miss ETRT. I was extremely involved over there. I had to step away, far away… because it became toxic in the Religion section. But that was 10-12 years ago. I’d pop in over here quite often, but didn’t know as many people. I still feel very much like a newbie, but I’m thankful for great insight found here.
