Went to our central Indiana Kroger today for the first time in almost two weeks.
It was super stocked but I didn’t check every aisle, of course.
Prices were sky high as usual in beef, but I snooped around for random items…I’m seeing increases at least by 10-30 cents.

Sad little side story ….I was poking around the meat area, making my choices. An elderly man using a scooter was there too , he had a foreign accent similar to Eastern Europe. Poor thing. He was just lost. He started asking me about different cuts, how to use them or what was what.
The main issue was what he could afford.
Long story short, I was able to help him a little, told him which ones were wayyy too pricey for what you get, which ones were tough, so on and so one….he was really wanting a little bit of stew meat…found some! An ghtght d marked down too!

so I snooped further, finding him two little strip steaks half off at the very end of the case! He was just thrilled bless his heart, the smile on his face was worth the the trip, alone.
:)
Good for you! I do that sort if thing when I can... just basic humanity. I knew I'd raised my kids right when my youngest son came home after a track meet with a half gallon of ice cream. I asked, "why?" As we had several cartons in the freezer. He said, "mom, I had to! There was this little old man who thought he could get a single carton for half price, because they were "buy one, get one". But they wouldn't let him do that. So I bought 2, and gave him the free one"...

I went to Aldi to pick up just a few things Sunday afternoon. I had not been there in a couple of weeks. The last time I was there, 85% lean hamburger was 3.69 a pound. Sunday it was up to 4.09 a pound. Today while shredding some paperwork I found a receipt from October. That same hamburger was 3.29 a pound then.

Oh! I wanted to tell you Kroger has (at least one Kroger does) family pack sizes of chicken breasts bone IN, skin ON, at half off. I don’t know the per/lb price, I just know they are 5-6$ a pack which is about half. I bought two of those.

I had a big $$ grocery trip today or I would have bought more of those even though I hate cleaning off the skin lol.

I also bought their pork loin on sale and a chuck roast as well as a family pack of skinless breasts.

Pork loins, two varieties, are on sale. Can’t remember the price but again, the one I grabbed was 6$. That’s pretty cheap. Our freezer is too full for more.

Chuck roasts on sale 4.99/lb. That’s not great, but I’ll take it. And it won’t get any better :(

I've been hungry for beef stew but refusing to pay the price for stew meat. When I was at the store Monday, they had round steak for $4.99 a pound and stew meat for $5,69. So I bought a round steak, cut 2/3's into stew chunks and vacuum sealed the remainder for another meal. So I had my beef stew last night and made enough for at least 4 more meals plus another meal with the frozen bit for $5.19. Pork prices have been very reasonable here since early last fall. They are inching up, but still reasonable when compared to beef.

Stew meat IS ridiculous, isn’t it??

That’s what started my story ^^^ about that older man! Poor thing, all he wanted was some stew and most packages were 15-20$ !!

My mom is rolling over in her grave ! I remember that previously being 2-5$….easy!

I don't know what is up with mayonnaise. That section keeps getting smaller and less stocked.
Maybe this is one of the war shortages? Have they pulled the Russian made mayonnaise from the shelves? Is there a Mayonnaise region of Ukraine? Has it been affected during all this?

Cardiac rehab and voted earlier. Was hungry and craving an Italian sub from my grocery store deli case. Decided to make a full lunch of it with Diet Pepsi and some low fat potatoe chips (a pickle too.)

By the time I checked out it was $59! Granted, $15 of it was splurging on lunch. But still, it isn't that much food. Especially considering I went on Friday too.

The mac n cheese is a prep put-away.

I did the Walmart curbside pickup today. (N MN). Just the usual consumables - falling into an every 2 week pattern - fresh produce, milk, eggs (thank goodness this should be the last time before my hens kick in!), baking supplies, etc. Only one thing out-of-stock..those cheap .66/lb chicken quarters, but not a big deal. I just buy them when they have them because they are dead cheap.

Meat store was the other stop. I got 10 lbs of bulk spiced loose pork sausage, because the kid had just brought the tub out from the grinder and it was as pink and fresh as it could be at 1.99/lb. Then, porketta steaks at 1.99/lb and country style ribs at 1.69/lb. They also had their lean 10# burger bags at 3.99/lb, but I didn't need it with a freezer full yet at home from the neighbor's Angus.

Gas in town was 3.41/gallon for unleaded, 3.38 at the little whistlestop meat store closer to home. While I was gone, the propane guy came by, filled the 500 gallon tank - ~350 gallons at 2.79/gal. (BTW..that's up from the price she quoted last week on the phone of $2.59/gal). Anyway...very glad THAT is topped off for the rest of the heating season and cooking 'til fall.

If you take the bones and skin after turning then into boneless/skinless breasts, toss them into a roasting pan and bake at 400 degrees until golden. Then make soup!

I routinely have to skin and bone out 50 at a time when we butcher meat birds. It's not my favorite job, for sure, but I've gotten so I can do 2-3 per minute.

Hmmm, good idea!
I’ve already cleaned them up, divided into freezer bags and in the freezer they went.
Maybe with the next ones I’ll do that

You are losing a GREAT PROPORTION OF the " chicken" taste and part of the nutrients by not cooking the SKIN and bones in your broth. The chicken
skin is where you get the COLLAGEN to help YOUR stay young, also the KERATIN to help you fingernails beautiful and your hair full and beautiful!

Whether you cut up the skin in little bites and leave it in the soup or take it out after the broth is cooked, it makes A big differencce in taste and nutrition. "Watery" chicken soup is made with boneless, skinless chicken breasts, with very little chicken taste, NUTRITION, or heartiness.

I guess my writing was worse than usual! You use the skin and bones for the soup...you can use them "raw", which gives you a mild flavored, golden broth. But if you roast the skins and bones (use the drippings in the broth,, too) it gives a deeper, richer flavored broth...

I'm not sure what is going on but my Instacart order had every single item in stock. Ran the gamut from dairy to meat and other fresh things. Expensive and going up as I sit here. Aluminum foil was crazy expensive. 13 fir the 200 ft roll.
Probably a lot cheaper at Walmart if you go in person.

Gas here in central PA jumped from $3.75 to $3.89. Local market ad has an advertised deli lunch meat costing more per lb than the advertised cuts of steak and roast.
What is going on with lunchmeat? Can no longer get Oscar Meyer's cuts except regular bologna. I been doing egg salad, chicken salad, beef salad, tuna, grilled cheese. Get sick of turkey and ham lunchmeat. Been months since I saw that Oscar Meyer ham and cheese.

$5.09 for three Tacos at Taco Bell. We were working, needed some food, hit TB and got three for $5.09.

On the way to work we stopped to get a Donut at Dunkins. Part of the gas station we regularly use. Lobby was blocked off-were told to go to the drive thru. Went to the drive thru-girl comes to window and says we need to order at the Box. Did not know they HAD a box but, instead of just getting us the two donuts she wanted us to drive around the building to the box.

At our local Walmart, yesterday, they were out of their plastic shopping bags! Didn't have any in the back, so they were closing down check-out lines. Only had 3 check-outs open, and the lady that checked us out said she didn't know what they would do when those 3 lines ran out. She was already short. Thankfully, she had enough left for us!

I've got some cloth bags I can take with me when I go. And maybe I should stop throwing the plastic bags in the burn barrel, although I do have some saved back. I only use them for small trash cans.

I jokingly told Cary that we may need to buy some of their cloth shopping bags and bring with us next time. She said that might be a good idea!

Saving the old bags to use in small garbage cans is what I do, too.

Neither here nor there.
So a person in one of the cat groups I'm a member of on facespy made the mistake of outing herself for stocking up on wet and dry catfood for her five fur babies, she said she now has enough for twenty seven weeks and went to several stores cleaning them out. And boy oh boy are the members there going ballistic telling her she's causing panic buying, that she's the reason there's a shortage of cat food, etc.

My advice, keep your mouth shut when it comes to major food purchases be it human or for your pets.

packaging shortage, packaging shortage, packaging shortage, packaging shortage, packaging shortage,

All of that packaging is sitting on a ship out in the ocean someplace. If you watch Market to Market each Friday, or Sunday afternoon, on PBS online you will see/learn that producers are trying to redesign their packaging so they can get product onto the market.

The city target is nearly out of everything.
No orange or other juices except pina colado and mango. Bread and milk thin. Frozen food is thin. Meat is thin. Sandwich meat is empty rack two types of eggs one $6 a carton and the other$4.
Safeway up the block is better stocked but still thin compared to 2 years ago.

Glad I stocked up this week. I could see the stuff vanishing day by day!

Just got back from our small town. Wanted to top off the Diesel. Nothing was working with credit cards. Everything was cash. Of course I was prepared for this but the State was not. They had equipment at the pump and making phone calls all to no avail. Cash only and the State uses credit cards to fill their equipment and vehicles. So to see what the grocery store was doing I went and bought a gallon of milk. Cash only at the check out. Told the clerk war is hell and she agreed. Told her another day of this and there will be a run on the local bank just to fuel and eat. She just agreed. Price didn't matter just the ability to get what you needed did. My prepper lesson for the day. Passed with an A+.

In our local newspaper back in 1957 the grocery ads featured 100% ground beef 3# 89¢, beef roasts 39¢ #, Campbells tomato soup 2 for 21¢ and grapefruit 5 for 29¢. What a difference 65 years makes!!
I remember well. Mom used to send me to the little market. Weber bread had Disney decals on the end. 15 cents.
We had the bakery delivery trucks too along with ice cream and tinkers who sold everything from produce to cigarettes. Thifty ice cream 5 cents a scoop.

Does this mean I should take myself out to lunch tomorrow with the idea in mind it might be my last time eating out and for a very long time?

Someone should start a thread about what's going on. I just assume everything is ok in my area because my cards are working for online orders today. But that is worrisome to say the least. Was at the bank Monday and all was normal.
