Sweden boosts patrols on Gotland Island amid NATO-Russia tensions: Reports
ANI
14 Jan 2022, 10:27 GMT+10

Zurich [Switzerland], January 14 (ANI/Sputnik): Sweden has decided to boost patrols on the Gotland island in the Baltic Sea amid the tensions in the NATO-Russia relations, media reported.

Tomas Angshammar, the head of the Gotland Regiment that is patrolling the island, told Radio Sweden that the patrols would be more visible to the public
.

He added that the risk of an armed attack on Sweden is currently low.

US, NATO and Russian officials have been engaged in a series of meetings this week to discuss bilateral issues and European security, with a focus on risk reduction and arms control. Moscow published its security suggestions for NATO and the US in late 2021 as tensions flared high around Ukraine. It requested, in particular, guarantees that the alliance would not expand eastward. The US insists it will not allow anyone to slam NATO's open-door policy shut. (ANI/Sputnik)

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Sweden's military said on Thursday it was ramping up its visible activities on the Baltic Sea island of Gotland amid increased tensions between NATO and Russia and a recent deployment of Russian landing craft in the Baltic.

Moscow has spooked the West by massing troops near Ukraine, sparking fears that it is considering invading. Moscow denies any such plans, saying it can deploy forces on its territory however it chooses.

Gotland, Sweden's biggest island, is strategically important and lies around 330 kilometres (205 miles) from Kaliningrad, the headquarters of Russia's Baltic Fleet. In 2019 Sweden deployed an updated ground-to-air missile defence system on the island.

Lieutenant General Michael Claesson, Chief of Joint Operations at the Armed Forces, told Reuters that from Thursday troops were patrolling the harbour and airport of Visby, Gotland's main town.

Sweden is not a NATO member but has close ties to the Atlantic alliance and has been beefing up its armed forces after decades of neglect amid increased anxiety over Russian sabre-rattling in the Baltic Sea region.

Claesson said the Gotland move was triggered by Russian landing ships entering the Baltic Sea this week and followed years of deteriorating security conditions, including in Sweden's immediate geographic vicinity.

"Recent security developments and tensions at security policy level have not changed that picture but rather reinforce it," he said, adding that the armed forces had recently noted an expansion of foreign offensive capability near Sweden.

"... Russian landing ships are an example of such offensive capability," he said. "They have passed through (Denmark's) Great Belt strait and continued into the Baltic Sea."

Claesson said the armed forces were also taking action in other parts of Sweden in response to recent Russian moves but declined further comment.

Sweden's top military commander said last week that Sweden's security strategy would be entirely undermined if NATO agreed to refrain from expanding further and to curb some of its activity in Europe, as Russia has demanded.

"Need to Know"
I write this knowing I take a risk of having tomatoes thrown at me (at least make them potatoes so I can prepare some yummy vodka!).

With the continuing and eastward creeping of NATO in practice and also in hopeful intentions by wanna-be member nations, would anyone here attempt the same as Putin as far as annexing Crimea under the obama admin and now making aggressions on the whole of Ukraine? After all, Ukraine is supposed to remain neutral yet a majority of the Ukraine population and also many Western-aligned groups (who constantly provoke Putin with this) want Ukraine to join NATO anyway. Also, many people already feel that Ukraine is a de facto NATO member by way of all the NATO and European and American heavy-duty military assistance over the years. Remember NATO wanting to place a missile defense system across eastern Europe...in 2015 America placed one in Romania. I think I would do the same as Putin if I were Putin. His job is to protect Russia and Russia's interests and security. Turn the tables and imagine Russia doing the same and we know NATO powers would react too and perhaps more swiftly!

If you don't have the mindset yet that we are well and truly fu@#ed you are behind the curve. It is going to happen. What we (personally) do about it is up to us. Hope you have food and ammo to protect it. Hope you and I are right with our gods. Then again..... Tomorrow could just be another Friday. I will be burying my 94 year old grandfather.

Sorry to hear about your grandfather.

OF COURSE the demands are unacceptable. They're SUPPOSED to be.

At this point, what we have are the dying, echoing strains of one of the gavottes and the tuning up of the orchestra for the Beguine (Last Dance for the evening).

Gotta remember there are a lot of written and unwritten laws in Warfare between Great Powers (Assuming that the USofA still qualifies in that club).

I figure the tanks will fire up just around dawn local Donbas time Sunday Morning. Always assuming the ground is frozen.

Hopefully he's gone to his rest and all of you will be comforted. We laid our next-door neighbor to rest this afternoon; he was 85 and I'm happy for him, and sad for his family because I know they miss him. His wife passed over in July; I didn't think he'd make it for too long after that before he joined her. I learned today they were married in 1954. I'm sure that she and the oldest son they'd lost many years ago were the first to greet him when he arrived home.

So, next up from the cast and crew who brought you the Afghanistan withdrawal fiasco.................
War with Russia!

When empty shelves, a broken supply chain, soaring inflation, and a raging pandemic of tyranny just don't destroy America fast enough, let Beijing-Biden and his merry band of clueless losers pick a fight with a hypersonic nuclear missile armed superpower, in their own backyard.

I can hear CNN now, "Many experts agree that the nuclear detonations around the country, though frightening to see, will actually help to solve many of the problems that were caused by Trump and his racist supporters and other domestic insurrectionists who hated our democracy, and help us to more quickly adapt to a greener, more sustainable world just oozing with equity.

Crazy? I used to would have thought so.

That other rule of warfare. We leave the Line of Departure at Dawn! Every exercise, every war game, every service world wide it seems, Line of Departure at Dawn.
Just once, I wanted it all to roll out at 10:15AM.

NATO debate is peripheral and distracts from the central dynamic which is how Russian aggressive actions in 2014 triggered an expansion of Ukrainian military power to the extent that now Russia is running out of time before trends in UA arms programmes turn it into a local rival
There is something of the view of the world from 9th avenue in how much US analysis is drawn into rebutting/exploring RU MFA talking points on NATO when crux of the crisis is how inevitable UA military expansion in response to RU pressure changes dynamics in the post-Soviet space
A lot of Russian diplomacy right now boils down to Moscow demanding that the Americans turn Ukraine off and on again and then proving unwilling to acknowledge that the US doesn't control the switch

As a result of a massive cyber attack, the websites of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a number of other government agencies are temporarily down. Our specialists have already started restoring the work of IT systems, and the cyberpolice has opened an investigation.
