French Troops in Ukraine May Be Play by Macron to Propel Himself to Status of 21st Century Sun King
3 hours ago:
"France's Defense Ministry denies the presence of French soldiers in Ukraine, or plans to send forces to the conflict-torn Eastern European country."

France now says they are backing down, the old Eastern European quagmire, so true.
Hmmm...so what did Russia say?
France was not able to maintain its foothold in Africa - yet they plan to take on Russia - and WIN

And as I understand it, was the reason for ending the Cuban missile crisis. We take our missiles out of Turkey, they take theirs out of Cuba.
100% that was the agreement worked out - when the US actually had diplomats.
Back then the US actually had the advantage in Nukes vs Russia - not today - but the simple issue of if you put a gun to my head I plan to do the same resulted in both sides stepping back.

Yes, missiles are faster (mainly Russian ones) and they can be launched from a number of locations. But the US was quite clear on wanting to base Nuke capable missiles in Ukraine. As commented on for the last few year - another Cuban missile crisis - this one however triggered by the US.

The big change from the 1960's is the US no longer even attempts to negotiate - relying on force - Economic Sanctions and military actions. While this has - somewhat - worked on smaller nations now the US is attempting to apply them to Russia and China.
Unlike the 1960's - today the US brags on how they won't even talk to Russia - will not ever recognize their elections.
As has been noted - War is just one form of diplomacy - likely the only one the US now understands.

The Buffer Zone conversation applies to short and medium range ballistic missiles that don't provide 15-20 minutes worth of warning; both sides view those as First Strike weapons. The Buffer Zone conversation also applies to Russia's history of being invaded (alot), and their almost genetic desire for more easily secured approach points for enemy land forces... Their "Paranoia" isn't all that misplaced, especially considering the West's track record of overstepping agreed upon boundaries ever since the Wall fell.

The West had a brief moment during the Clinton administration, where we could have brought the Russians in from the cold and made them our friends, but apparently, the West preferred something more confrontational... Can you imagine the prosperity that would have occurred if Western Europe and Eastern Europe all decided to play nice? But, as history show CLEARLY, Europeans LOVE to fight with each other. So, we get what we have today.
The West had a brief moment during the Clinton administration, where we could have brought the Russians in from the cold and made them our friends,
Instead they targeted Russia - which had abandoned Communism - as an enemy while China still under Communism got favored nation trading status. Russia as a new capitalist state desperately wanted to rejoin Europe - as noted - this would have been a major win - win for both the EU and Russia.

That is likely the core of the problem - the US did not - does not want - the EU block independent of US control - it is necessary to economically hobble them - and it has worked. Not to mention we still maintain an army of occupation there since WW2

Russian Submarines Now Appear To Be Getting Anti-Drone “Cope Cages”

An apparent counter-drone screen on the ballistic missile submarine Tula’s conning tower speaks to growing drone threats Russia is facing.

Not exactly sure what this is - but ballistic missile subs launch from underwater - they are almost never on the surface - could be nothing more than to keep SNOW out of the conning tower when at dock. As for drones - they would just fly UNDER the cover. Cages like this were put on tanks early on to protect against Javelin types of Anti Tank missile that would shoot up and then directly down onto the tank's top where armor was weaker.

dang it, I didn't wanna have to read the article in it's entirety. :D

they don't know what it might be for either, though suggest that the subs are vulnerable/above often enough to make the need for protection from drones a valid need, as we've seen how sophisticated those - particularly the fpvs are, and how well able they've proven to be in navigating smaller entryways-
:: shrug :: Probably just a sunscreen thing, but either way, it's a threat that subs will face sooner or later.

Good truthful post.

The width of the buffer zone will be one of the most-debated points after Ukraine's capitulation. From the POV of a city like Donetsk which has been shelled daily for almost 10 (Yes, TEN!) years, the buffer zone will have to be at least 50km wider than the range of NATO's existing combined artillery systems. I don't know; maybe they'll all be blown up by then, but some fool country will ship them something, believing that Uncle Sugar will undoubtedly replace it.

But if we mess up and give them long-range systems such as ATACMS, the Russkies will carve out a LOT thicker buffer. This means there won't be much left of a rump Ukraine for Poland, Hungary, Romania, et al., to divvy up among themselves, but ce la vie.

Zelensky has to know his time in the catbird's seat is drawing short and is formulating some escape plans. Let me help. On your next victory begging tour, plan to hit up South America, but stop at one of your Florida mansions (or buy a new one with the gold in the jet). Governor DeSantis might ship you to Martha's Vineyard, but Obama would make sure your jet would never land there. Maybe you could let yourself be sent to Guantanamo Bay for safekeeping; surely you'd be safe there while you were negotiating a cut-rate deal for Epstein Island.

Seriously, there's some crazy times coming up, I think. As the loonies in charge of Ukraine get more and more desperate, they will have no boundaries as to inadmissible acts. They could cut loose with bioweapons, cause another Chernobyl at a nuclear plant, and cut more dams to flood out their own citizens. With some of the goofy stunts they've recently pulled, something which civilized people would consider to be absolutely crazy are likely to come at us from nowhere.

The problem is that if Putin is allowed to "win" there will be nothing to keep him or other allied regimes from doing it again.

The last 30 years of internal history of Ukraine hasn't been pretty, but neither has been that of Russia.

Well I do not think Putin is asking the US and NATO - to be allowed to win.
Effectively we have little to no control on how this will go. Even with more $$ and related arms there is a limited number of bodies Ukraine can draft. This is a war of attrition and Russia just has more of everything needed to keep this going.

Marina Vasilevskaya will become the first woman in the history of independent Belarus to participate in a space flight. She will be accompanied by Russian Oleg Novitskiy and American Tracy Dyson.

The rocket launch is scheduled for 16:21 from the 31st launch pad of the Baikonur Cosmodrome. The launch of the spacecraft is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the birth of the first astronaut of the planet, Yuri Gagarin, and a corresponding poster has been attached to the rocket's fairing.

I get that it's simple numbers. The variables are manpower and available firepower. The evolution from the "square" division to the triangular to the penatomic to the evolution to the current BCT. The fewer people you have and the less mobile the more and more applicable firepower you need to make up the difference. The Swamp made sure to arrive at the situation we now have in Europe and elsewhere.

What needs to be clearly defined is who benefits and to what degree in what denominations?

According to Wikipedia, there have been three Belarusians in space. All three have been men and with this fourth being female that puts their percentage of female cosmonauts actually in space at 25% (assuming, of course, that the mission goes as planned). Which on the whole may well be better than any other country's average, so I don't really see the "tragedy" of it.

Thats not a cope cage. It is most likely for weather to keep a watch dry and keep rain/snow out of the hatch. You could hit a surfaced submarine just about anywhere on the exposed hull and do serious damage so a cope cage just over the bridge isnt going to do anything.

The "tragedy" of it is that this type of cooperation between nations can not extend to all areas - there should be efforts to NORMALIZE relations - not building a new Iron Wall and starting up the COLD (warm) War again.

Abert's thoughts mentioned just after your post mirrors what my initial thoughts were, as well: I don't think NATO (including the US) could "disallow" Russia from winning this conflict, period. Barring black swans, the outcome is essentially assured for the inevitable Russian victory. But remember that we were basically discussing future buffer zones. I have to believe that President Putin will be less than benevolent when the time comes to define them.

As far as the last 30 years' worth of history of both countries, there were admittedly some bad times for them both.

I remember Ukraine as an agricultural and industrial powerhouse producing all kinds of things for global markets. One personal example is that the Canadians up in Edmonton created a style of next-generation deep drilling rig named the Polar Developer. They had a subsidiary in Ukraine which built all the various rigs they'd designed except for the North & South American markets.

I spent a day on one of their ultra-deep units in Russia (in Samara Oblast IIRC) which was owned and operated by Weatherford. It was the most innovative cold-weather design for operating on multi-well pads I've ever seen, and the workmanship was superb. But Ukraine itself was already faltering under a series of corrupt governments. All of the already-built models which would've worked for our project were locked into hard long-term contracts. If I'd wanted to build one of those rigs for a planned development, I would've most likely had to have ordered one in Canada or Houston and had it shipped to Russia. Mega-expensive but the IDM construction subsidiary in Ukraine had already become undependable about delivering good work on budget and in time.

Russia indeed had its hard times as well, particularly with the fall of communism and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989. Putin came to power in, I think, 1999 and began the long slog of not only restoring Russia's status as a global power but completely rebuilding the society and its governing systems. US expatriates in Moscow who'd lived through that era told me a lot of harrowing stories about how people survived what were essentially dystopian times for them.

Up until then, I really hadn't realized what that part of the world had been going through. I remember lots of talk in the US about a Cold War "peace dividend" which was essentially a social-engineering money grab which the Bushes and the Clintons happily spread around to their cronies.

Not a clue, but I'm mostly confident that it's nowhere near 25% . That's for astronauts that have actually gone into space, not including those in training or on standby or whatever. There are 10 people in space right now, two of which are females (both are Americans). There appears to be plenty of international manned missions cooperation in space, although the Chinese don't seem to be playing well with others.

Russia launches barrage of missiles on Ukraine's capital city hours after US national security adviser visit

Kyiv, Ukraine Edited By: Prisha Updated: Mar 22, 2024, 08:20 AM IST

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

Nearly 25,000 citizens took shelter in the metro stations of Kyiv during the missile attacks launched by Russia

Russia launched a barrage of missiles on Ukraine's capital city Kyiv on Thursday morning (Mar 21). Such a heavy missile attack was launched for the first time in six weeks and only hours after US national security adviser Jake Sullivan had visited the city.

More than 25,000 citizens took shelter inside the metro stations of the city during the massive attack. The images and videos of people cramming together in underground metro stations circulated on social media platforms.

As per the officials, two ballistic missiles and 29 cruise missiles were fired by Russia in the Kyiv region, all of which Ukraine claimed were successfully shot down.

As per media reports, the missiles fired were probably ballistic missiles from North Korea.

As per the authorities, nearly a dozen citizens suffered injuries due to the falling debris and no fatalities were reported.

Speaking to CNN, 80-year-old Valentyna Ivanivna in Kyiv’s central Podil district said that she woke up after hearing a loud blast at 5 am which shattered her windows.

“I don’t know whether it was a missile or what it was, but now I have holes instead of windows. I’m alright, but my kitchen and a living room are now windowless. I was sleeping in the bedroom, which is behind another wall, which saved me from the shrapnel,” Ivanivna said.

No critical infrastructure facilities hit by missile: Kyiv

Head of the Kyiv region military administration Ruslan Kravchenko said that no residential buildings or critical infrastructure facilities were hit.

More than 25,000 citizens, which included 3,000 children, took shelter in the metro stations of the city till 6 am local time when the authorities lifted the air raid warning, said the Kyiv city office.

Watch: Russia-Ukraine war: Russia's largest attack on Kyiv in weeks

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the latest attack on the capital city is a reminder of why he needs more military support from allies.

“Russian terrorists do not have missiles that can bypass the defence of [US-made] PATRIOTs and other world-leading systems. Now this protection is needed here in Ukraine [..] This is quite possible if our partners have enough political will,” he said on the social media platforms.

31 ballistic and cruise missiles were fired at the Ukrainian capital before dawn, and more than a dozen people, including a child, were injured.

It came as a leading U.S. think-tank is warning that Russia appears to be gearing up for a large-scale conflict with NATO.

like that last coup they pulled off where they used internet Dominion voting machines and A phony COVID virus to institute lockdowns and mail in votes to steal the entire country here 3-1/2 years ago with the help of the Main stream media, The Republicans In Name Only, and the Bankers.

March 22, 2024

Russia. Is. At. War.

Due to a flurry of western support for Ukraine, now escalating to ground troop insertions, Russia had to move its special military operation in Ukraine into the bigger scope of a full fledged war.

Over the last month the Ukrainian military intelligence directorate GUR and its civilian secret service SBU have attempted to disturb the recent presidential election in Russia. They did this by:

  1. sending forces, with U.S. made equipment (Bradleys), to attack Russian border villages in the direction of Belgograd,
  2. by launching missiles from Czech Vampire (RM-70) multiple launch rocket systems towards Belgograd,
  3. by launching somewhat successful drone strike against Russian oil refineries.

The election in Russia saw a record turnout. As expected President Putin did win by a very large margin. His legitimacy is a geopolitical reality:

If Nato expansion is about the perpetuation of US hegemony and de-dollarisation is about the burial of the western financial system that underpins that hegemony, Putin is playing a pivotal role in that historical process. If Putin remains in power till 2030 and fulfils even one half of the ambitious blueprint of social and economic programme for Russia that he outlined in his landmark speech at the Federal Assembly of the parliament, the global strategic balance will have shifted irrevocably and cemented a multipolar world order as the anchor sheet of 21st century politics.
The West knows it, the Russian people know it, the vast majority of nations realise it. That said, it must be understood as well that this is not only Putin’s victory personally but also a consolidation of Russian society around him. And that accounts for the last week’s election turning into such a high-stakes affair.

With the election out of the way Russia was free to hit back.

Ru Ministry of Defense claims 1725 Ukrainian casualties over the last day (650 in Belgograd direction alone)
https://function.mil.ru/news_page/...

Over the last six days the Russian MoD reports claimed no less than nine hits on the Czech Vampire systems which targeted Belgograd.

The Ukrainian incursion towards Belgograd has thus been defeated.

On Wednesday Jake Sullivan, the U.S. National Security Advisor, had visited Kiev. He was noticed for what he did not say:

Jake Sullivan, US National Security Adviser, has said that Ukraine will win if it comes out of the war as a sovereign, democratic and free country. At the same time, he did not mention restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity among the conditions of victory.

It is believed that Sullivan delivered a warning to Kiev. As the Financial Times reported (archived):

The US has urged Ukraine to halt attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure, warning the drone strikes risk driving up global oil prices and provoking retaliation, according to three people familiar with the discussions.
The repeated warnings from Washington were delivered to senior officials at Ukraine’s state security service, the SBU, and its military intelligence directorate, known as the GUR, the people told the Financial Times.
Both intelligence units have steadily expanded their own drone programmes to strike Russian targets on land, sea and in the air since the start of the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The U.S. concern is not about Ukraine but about Biden's chance for reelection:

Russia remains one of the world’s most important energy exporters despite western sanctions on its oil and gas sector. Oil prices have risen about 15 per cent this year, to $85 a barrel, pushing up fuel costs just as US President Joe Biden begins his campaign for re-election.
...
The US objections come as Biden faces a tough re-election battle this year with petrol prices on the rise, increasing almost 15 per cent this year to around $3.50 a gallon.
“Nothing terrifies a sitting American president more than a surge in pump prices during an election year,” said Bob McNally, president of consultancy Rapidan Energy and a former White House energy adviser.

The Ukrainian government denied and confirmed the FT report (machine translation):

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanashina actually confirmed the information to the Financial Times , saying that "we understand the calls of American partners," but Ukraine responded to such calls by "achieving its goals" and "very successful operations" on the territory of the Russian Federation.

Sullivan's warning about provoking retaliation was too late.

Yesterday, for the first time in 44 days, Russia launched a missile attack against Kiev (archived):

The Ukrainian Air Force said that air defense systems had intercepted all 31 of the Russian missiles that targeted Kyiv. Still, debris from the downed missiles fell in various parts of the city, causing the injuries and damage. No deaths have been reported so far.
...
In the Podilskyi district, which is home to industrial facilities that Russia has targeted in the past, a plume of black smoke was rising early in the morning, suggesting a hit. Mr. Klitschko said a fire had broken out at a power substation in the area. Ukrainian officials rarely confirm strikes on strategic industrial and military targets.
...
Thursday’s attack on Kyiv echoed a strategy used by Russia during air assaults in late December that consisted of overwhelming Ukraine’s air defenses with multiple launches of various types of missiles, including ballistic and hypersonic ones.
Russia has launched relatively few large-scale missile attacks in recent months, despite a capacity to produce more than 115 long-range missiles per month, according to Ukrainian officials.

Yesterday's Russian MoD report said:

Last night, the Russian Aerospace Forces delivered a strike by long-range precision weaponry including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles at AFU decision-making centres, logistic bases, temporary deployment areas of special operations forces and foreign mercenaries.
The goal of the strike has been achieved. All the targets have been engaged.

Such Russian strikes are complex. Drones are send first to reveal Ukrainian air defense systems. Then follows a wave of attacks against those system. A third strike is then launched against the real targets of the attack. In this case those were a drone factory in Kiev as well as a headquarter of the military intelligence service GUR.

Another large scale strike followed today. The primary targets were elements of the electricity infrastructure:

Large areas of Ukraine are suffering blackouts after Russian missiles targeted energy infrastructure.
There is no electricity in the second-largest city of Kharkiv, says regional head Oleg Synehubov.
Fifteen blasts were reported in Kharkiv, while more than 53,000 households in Odesa were without power.
Ukraine's energy minister, German Galushchenko, accused Russia of trying to provoke "a large-scale failure of the country's energy system".
A power line feeding the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant had been cut, he added.
Regional head Ivan Fedorov said the power station was "on the verge of a blackout", adding that seven buildings in the region had been destroyed and 35 others damaged.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had launched more than 60 Shahed drones and about 90 missiles into Ukraine during the wave of overnight attacks.

Internet access in Ukraine has dropped significantly.

This was again a complex attack:

Today, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation delivered a massive strike with high-precision long-range weapons of air, sea, land-based and unmanned aerial vehicles against energy facilities, military-industrial complex, railway junctions, arsenals, places of deployment of formations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and foreign mercenaries.
As a result of the strike, the functioning of industrial enterprises for the production and repair of weapons, military equipment and ammunition was disorganized.
In addition, foreign military equipment and weapons delivered to Ukraine from NATO countries were destroyed, transfers to the front line of enemy reserves were disrupted, and units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and mercenaries in the areas of restoring combat capability were hit.
All the goals of the massive strike have been achieved.

Some European politicians are eager to join the fight.

As demonstrated today, Russia is ready for it. But unlike a still training Macron Russia has taken its gloves off (machine translation):

Peskov: Russia is in a state of war, everyone should understand this
Russia will continue to act in such a way that the military potential of Ukraine could not threaten the security of its citizens and its territory, he said in a conversation with reporters.
"What is the president talking about? We have four new regions of the Russian Federation. And the main thing for us is to protect people in these regions and liberate the territory of these regions, which is currently de facto occupied by the Kiev regime," Peskov said.
According to the presidential press secretary, Russia cannot allow the existence of a state on its borders that has documented the intention to use any methods to take Crimea from it, not to mention the territory of new regions.
"We are at war. Yes, it started out as a special military operation, but as soon as this little group was formed there, when the collective West became a participant in this on the side of Ukraine, it already became a war for us. I am convinced of this. And everyone should understand this for their internal mobilization," Peskov added.

In parallel to Peskov's declaration of war talk, Russias announced the mass production of the three ton heavy FAB-3.000 aerial bombs with 1,400 kg of explosives. These will be fitted, like the currently used FAB 500 and FAB 1.500, with the universal planning and correction module (UMPC) which allows the bombs to glide some 40 miles after being launched to then hit its planned target with high precision. There is little that can survive such a strike.

In his (highly recommendable) book "The Russian Art of War", the former Swiss military intelligence officer Jacques Baud described the reason why the current fighting in Ukraine started out as a "Special Military Operation" within a larger context:

The use of the word "war" would imply a different structure of conduct than that envisioned by the Russians in Ukraine, and would have other structural implications in Russia itself. Moreover - and this is a central point - as NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg himself acknowledges,"the war began in 2014" and should have been ended by the Minsk Agreements. The SMO is therefore a "military operation" and not a new "war", as many Western "experts" claim.

That was then. Now Russia is at war.

This will have, as Baud says, a different structure of conduct and other structural implications in Russia and beyond.

Those 'western' politicians who are dreaming of fighting Russia have no idea of what will hit their troops the moment they try to join the war.

NATO however, and especially the United States, will not go to war. At least not yet.

President Biden has his hands full with the genocidal war the Zionists are waging against the Palestinian population. There is also a chance for a war to suddenly start in Asia. (Could North Korea be asked to flex its muscles?)

Neither the U.S. nor Europe are in the shape of winning a multi-front war of global dimensions. The military leaders in the relevant countries know this well.

In consequence 'Western' politicians will have to bite the bitter pill of a decisive strategic defeat.

Russia’s military operation in Ukraine has turned into full-fledged war after the West became a participant in the conflict, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with national media published on Friday.

Moscow will continue to pursue its goal of ensuring that the Ukrainian military cannot pose a threat to Russian citizens or territory, the spokesman told the Argumenti i Fakty newspaper, noting that the country now has four new federal subjects which must be protected and fully liberated from Kiev’s forces.

Peskov stressed that Russia cannot allow the existence on its borders of a state that publicly claims it will seize the Crimean Peninsula as well as Russia’s new territories, referring to the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics and Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.
“We are at war,” Peskov stated, explaining that while the conflict began as a special military operation, as soon as “the collective West became a participant in this on the side of Ukraine, for us it became a war.”

In a phone conversation with journalists later in the day, Peskov explained that despite the conflict “de facto turning into a war,” legally it remains classified in Russia as a special military operation and that nothing has changed in that regard.

The Russian Defense Ministry recently reported that since the start of the military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, over 13,000 foreign nationals have taken part in the fighting on the side of Kiev’s forces.

Of these fighters, which Moscow describes as mercenaries, some 5,962 have been “eliminated,” according to the ministry. Most of them came from Poland, Georgia, the US, Canada, the UK, Romania, Germany, and France, it reported.

The head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), Sergey Naryshkin, claimed earlier this week that France is preparing its forces for deployment to Ukraine and is allegedly looking to send as many as 2,000 troops to fight for Kiev.
French President Emmanuel Macron has hinted in recent weeks at the possible deployment of NATO forces to Ukraine, stating he could not “exclude” this possibility while branding Russia an “adversary.”

Moscow has warned that such a step would likely lead to a direct clash between Russian and NATO forces, which, according to President Vladimir Putin, would be “one step shy of a full-scale World War III.”
