Portable water filters

I am needing experiences with portable water filters. I am looking at a Katadyn because the refills seem to be easily accessible. I searched TB and the only link I found was from 2005. Any suggestions?

IMO, Katadyn is the only way to go these days. In recent years, they've expanded their Market share through competitor aquisition and built upon good ideas to make even better ones, and at a good value besides! Check for sales, and find "water purifiers" that actually render suspect water inert & safe, rather than lesser "filter only" units.

I always check their prices first before I go or get it anywhere else. I have the Katadyn Hiker, I think. Haven't used it yet but is supposed to be great. They make some now that are in the $200 range. But the ones for $60-$80 work just fine.

This is the one I keep in my Bug Out Bag...(along with a 'very small' custom plastic bottle full of Regular Clorox bleach, and an eye dropper).

It's expensive...prices range from $165 to around $200 dollars, (on Ebay)...but it WILL treat up to 13,000 gallons!

In a SHTF situation, where you may not be able to find ANY type of 'replacement' filters for your cheaper models...this one just might see you through.

All my research says, it's the best one out there...

128 oz = 16 eight oz glasses = one US gallon

Katadyn Pocket Water filter rated at 13,000
gallons costs $200 or 1.5 cents per gallon.

sounds cheap enough to me.

BTW we have a Big Berkey in the kitchen (rated 75,000 gallons).
Since 1988 there is a Katadyn Pocket Water filter with extra new filter element in the packsack that lives behind the seat of my 4x4 pickup.

my choice is the katadyn mini. it's smaller and less expensive than the one zulu posted, but it still filters up to 2000 gallons.

The lightest, most compact water filter on the market. Small size fits in coat pocket or waist pack. Ideal for travel and day hiking. Exclusive silver impregnated ceramic element lasts up to 2000 gal. Ceramic microstrainer removes bacteria and protozoans, including giardia and cryptosporidia. Silver impregnation inhibits bacterial growth inside filter pores. Comes with 30" intake hose, cleaning brush and case. Use iodine or chlorine where viruses are suspected.

$81.75

C4I, after the recommended number of gallons have been filtered, can the filter be cleaned, or do you need to buy a new one, or is the entire unit thrown out?

the filter should be washed/scrubbed when the flow decreases. after 2000 gallons or so the entire filter element needs to be replaced. but just to put things into perspective, if the unit is used by one person to filter ALL their water consumption needs then at most that will average out to 2 gallons a day. therefore, this filter should be good to provide all the clean water needs for a person for almost 3 years...that's a lot of water. :D

of course, having a spare filter is smart...for the mini they're around $50.

If you have time on your hands then you can gravity feed the kayedyne filters instead of pumping them.

I have resiviour bag with a hose to feed into the filter and another resivour bag or container to fill up with filtered water.

I always use a few drops [8-12]of chlorine in the water or iodine tablets, I prefer to use cholorine due to the taste. I've done my suffering with untreated water -- IBS.

Used Erthromycin to cure 'beaver fever' / IBS. It was inaverdently fixed durring a bout of Streph Throat.

We have a Big Berkey (British Berkefeld) drip-style filter for the house. We love it. One set of candles should treat about 20,000 gallons of "city water" before needing replacement.

Do any of these filters remove the 1 micron sized bacteria or chemical pollution. My feeling is that these filters are just strainers, I’d would like to be wrong.

There are competers to the big berky. You have to ask what you are trying to do. Home or basecamp, it doesn't matter how big or heavy it is. The pump ones are smaller and lighter, like for hiking. Then determine according to the features.

We use the Black Berkey set up for our house and have a Katydyne for bugout.
I have to say that the Black Berkey filters more stuff than the Katydyne tho. But in a pinch I would drink the Katydyne water. We do have iodine tablets to treat the water first tho.
The only water I trust fully is the stuff that goes thru our Berkey. I won't even buy bottled water as most of it has additives in it and you can't guarantee the source where they got it from these days. It could be the faucet in their plant coming from the city they are located in......
We even filter the local mt spring water. We go get it and then filter it. WHY? Because we have no idea what has gotten into the aquafier thru runoff from roads, ect. With all the calcium cloride they pour on the roads up here and the spring not being far from the road, who knows?

Mostly we just use our well water thru the Berkey. Works great. If I need it bottled to travel, I fill my own bottles from the Berkey. Been using it for 7 years now with only 1 filter change in that time. Probably saved thousands of dollars.

We have a Berkey Light and LOVE it. 75% of the houses on our road run out of water all the time (us included) and as a result we are constantly hauling water from the fire dept (they tell us not to drink it). We also have the gutters from the front half of the roof and the porch run into the well so the well is constantly stirred up with undrinkable water. You should see the color the water is sometimes when I put it in the top of the Berkey, and EVERY TIME it comes out clear. Amazing!
