NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- A South Carolina man faces a daily fine and possible eviction for flying the American flag outside his home.

Mike Kaminsky put the flag outside his rented home Sept. 12, the day after a firefighter friend died at the World Trade Center.

However, two months ago, property owners in Kaminsky's North Myrtle Beach neighborhood formed a homeowners association. One of the rules they passed banned the flying of flags outside properties.

The homeowners group said that either Kaminsky or the owner of the home must take the flag down by Saturday or face a $25 per day fine. Members also reportedly threatened to put a lien on the property.

Association President Bill Wren said it's a matter of keeping property values up. He said that if everyone flew different flags, "it would look like a third-world country.''

Hey Bill,

These “covenanted” developments are more tyrannical than the feds. I would NEVER move into such a community. They are terrifyingly “democratic.”

They formed a Homeowners Association two months ago? I though you had to join them voluntarily, like when you purchased in a certain neighborhood.

Prior precedent I say!

Up their's.

Even most citys grandfather stuff that existed before an ordinance was inacted. Not to mention that most of these stuffed shirts probably go to third world countries on vacations to soak up some of the atmosphere or some such gobbledegook.

Me and Big Bird (Wayne) went to a bar and grille in Shreveport yesterday for an afternoon brew and sandwich. I was wearing an Indian T-shirt, jeans, cowboy boots, and a flag Bandana on my head as a do rag. I set at the bar and ordered a corona, next to a pretty woman (blonde-30ish) dressed in military fatigues. Obviously an airwoman from Barksdale taking a lunch break. After a couple of beers we got to talking scooters and this guy in fatigues walks up behind us and just glares at me like I'm scum of the Earth. I give him by best go to hell look in return and he stalked off. I asked the chick if he was her boyfriend or just didn't like bikers or what. she pointed at my flag do rag and said he probably was pissed cause I was disrespecting it. The flag that is. I never thought of it that way, seemed to be a symbol of my patriotism to me.

Nikoli, I don't see that as disrespectful, anymore than wearing a flag shirt or ballcap. What's the difference? I don't care for the torn flags I see on a lot of bikes though. I went on a 5 hour road trip last month, and saw maybe 20 flags being flown at dealerships, etc. More than half of them were ripped. That, I see as disrespectful. Either replace it, or take it down.

Shortly after Sept 11, someone called me..."Did you put a flag up?" Me, "No." Them, "Well, why not? Don't you appreciate...blah, blah, blah... Why don't you move to China or something." What the hell?

I wonder if this homeowner's association has actually spoken with someone like an attorney, anyone with an ounce of brains, anyone with a feel for public relations?

Man, this is the kind of thing that civil attorney's slavver about. "Oh please try to put a lien on my client's house..." The kind of thing the media loves to cover too. Somebody there needs to get their head out of their butt and wake up to how bad this is really, really making them look. Do you think *that* might hurt their property values?

Depends. If you wear a do-rag that looks like a flag with a red white and blue motif with some stars then I say you are just being patriotic.

Now if you take a real flag and make it into a do rag then that is a problem in my opinion. Someone does like those scum bags in the '60s and '70 and make pants or shorts out of one me and him are going to have to go out by the dumpsters! Do that with a Texas flag and all hell is going to break loose!
