A Minnesota state senator was arrested on suspicion of burglary in Detroit Lakes early Monday morning.

Sen. Nicole Mitchell, a first-term Democrat from Woodbury, was booked into the Becker County Jail. The roster indicates she was arrested on suspicion of first-degree burglary.

A woman living in the 700 block of Granger Road called police at 4:45 a.m. to report an active burglary at her home, Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd said. Officers responded to the scene and arrested the 49-year-old Mitchell, he said.

Property tax records from Becker County show that Mitchell's stepmother and her late father lived on that block of Granger Road in 2022.

The Becker County Attorney's Office is reviewing the case for possible charges. Further details weren't available as of early Monday afternoon. An attempt to reach Mitchell directly was not successful.

Mitchell is a former Twin Cities meteorologist and Air Force veteran.

A spokesman for the Minnesota Senate DFL Caucus said it "is aware of the situation and has no comment pending further information."

Democrats control the Minnesota Senate by a one-seat margin. The Legislature is heading into the final month of its 2024 session.

GOP Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson said in a statement that he was shocked by the news of Mitchell's arrest.

"The public expects Legislators to meet a high standard of conduct. As information comes out, we expect the consequences to meet the actions, both in the court of law, and in her role at the legislature," Johnson said.

You Can’t Make This Up: Minnesota Democrat Politician Arrested for Burglary, Just Days After Meeting with Far-Left Gun Control Group to Push for “Safer Communities”

Irony struck in the Land of 10,000 Lakes on Monday when a Democrat politician was arrested for burglary after recently pushing to disarm citizens.

As the Minnesota Reformer reported, Minnesota State Senator Nicole Mitchell (DFL-Woodbury) was arrested Monday morning in Detroit Lakes and booked into the Becker County Jail for suspected first-degree burglary.

The Becker County Attorney’s Office is currently reviewing the report and has not determined yet whether Mitchell will be charged, according to KVRR.
Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd said at 4:45 a.m., a 911 dispatcher received a call from a startled homeowner on Granger Road who revealed that a burglar had broken into their house.

Officers proceeded to arrest Mitchell at the scene and transported her to prison, where she is listed on the jail’s roster.
Mitchell is in her first term as a DFL senator, having been elected in 2022. She serves as vice chair of the Senate State and Local Government and Veterans Committee.

Before entering public office, Mitchell was a TV meteorologist for KSTP and Minnesota Public Radio. She also served as a commander in the Air National Guard’s 126th Weather Flight.
Marc Kimball, the spokesman for the Senate DFL, released a curt statement saying he will not comment on Mitchell’s arrest.
The Senate DFL Caucus is aware of the situation and has no comment pending further information.
Before her arrest, Mitchell met with members of the far-left gun control group Moms Demand Action last Tuesday to push for “common-sense gun reform” and “safer communities.”

Of course, this is all Democrat code for disarming ordinary Americans.
Mitchell should count herself fortunate the homeowner did not use a gun to protect his home. Other burglars have been less lucky.

A weather troop turns to a life of crime...I didn't have that on my bingo card.

I don't know her but I'll ask around and see if anyone in my network served with her.

I wonder if there is more to this than meets the eye. Was she drunk? Maybe it was an affair that dumped her? I doubt we ever know the why's and wherefores

Probably related to her parents house somehow, (maybe an estate settlement squabble?), or yeah...drunk as a skunk,
but along with most of her Democrat colleagues, she's also likely a massive hypocrite and a real piece of work.

So even State senators need part time jobs now? Perfect figurehead for the left though.
Most of them are either teachers or lawyers in the real world. Still not too shy for the teachers to double dip pension plans, and both groups to vote themselves and accept fat per diem packages while they lollygag about "in session" at the capitol.

Actually, that's not especially unusual. Many states pay their legislators relatively low salaries and the position is considered to be part time.

So, why would anyone want to be a legislator in a low-paying state? There are a few reasons. The best of them want to selflessly improve their state and try to work for the betterment of all. OK. You can stop laughing now as we consider some of the other motivations.

Some legislators want the prestige and respect that often goes with the title of senator or congressman and those positions often offer some hidden benefits, such as insurance and medical bennies.

Lastly - but by no means leastly - are the opportunities to benefit from campaign contributions, bribes and to feather ones nest.

Senate Republican leader calls for DFL senator’s immediate resignation after arrest, burglary charge

Court documents filed Tuesday morning are shedding more light on the arrest of Minnesota Senator Nicole Mitchell (DFL-Woodbury) on Monday, and a Senate Republican leader is now considering calling for her immediate resignation.

As previously reported by 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, Detroit Lakes police arrested Mitchell after being called to the 700 block of Granger Road at around 4:45 a.m. about a burglary happening in her home. When authorities responded and searched the home, they found Mitchell inside and arrested her.

Mitchell appeared in court late Tuesday morning, where a judge ordered she can be released without posting bail as long as she abides by conditions such as making future court appearances, remain law abiding, don’t leave the state with the exception of Cass County in North Dakota and traveling for official duties, among other conditions. An alternate, unconditional bail was set at $40,000.

Prosecutors said during the hearing that they don’t have any concerns about her returning for future court dates, and noted Mitchell has no priors.

Two sources tell Chief Political Reporter Tom Hauser that Republican Senate leaders are considering calling for Mitchell’s immediate resignation. In addition, Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson issued the following statement on Tuesday:

“I understand the difficult situation her family is facing, however the actions taken by Sen. Mitchell are disturbing. The complaint released by the Becker County Attorney lays out the case of a person who took extensive preparation to burglarize a family member’s home. This behavior is unbecoming of a member of the Legislature, and she needs to resign from the Senate immediately.”
Mark Johnson (R-East Grand Forks)
According to a criminal complaint – which is linked at the bottom of this article – a woman called police reporting a suspect, later identified as Mitchell, ran into her basement.

When police arrived, officers searched the basement and found Mitchell dressed entirely in black clothing and a black hat.

While being detained, the complaint says Mitchell told the victim that she was trying to get a couple of things belonging to her dad, who recently died, because the woman wouldn’t talk to Mitchell anymore.

Police say they also found a flashlight near Mitchell that was covered with a black sock and a black backpack stuck in a basement window. In the backpack, the complaint says officers found two laptops and a cellphone, plastic containers as well as her driver’s license and her Senate ID.

The document goes on to say Mitchell said she had “just gotten into the house” and “clearly I’m not good at this.”

While speaking with police, the complaint says Mitchell wanted various items belonging to her late father, including his ashes, however the woman who called police wouldn’t give them to her.

Mitchell then admitted to leaving her Woodbury home at 1 a.m. and driving to Detroit Lakes, as well as entering the house through the same window where the bag was found, according to the complaint.

The document goes on to say when police asked Mitchell about the laptops, she said the victim gave her the laptop “way back when” after it was opened, and the victim’s name popped up. The victim then denied giving Mitchell the laptop.

Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy also issued a statement regarding Mitchell’s arrest and charge:

“The allegations against Senator Mitchell are upsetting, for me and for anyone who has gotten to know and work with her. The behavior alleged is far outside the character she has established in the Senate and in her distinguished career in the military. We believe in due process, and Senator Mitchell has the right to a full defense of her case in court. In the coming days and weeks, Senator Mitchell must also have serious and difficult conversations with her colleagues, constituents and family.”
Erin Murphy (DFL-St. Paul)
Nicole Mitchell was previously a broadcast meteorologist in the Twin Cities before running for office. Mitchell is also an officer in the Air National Guard.

Mitchell’s next court hearing is scheduled for the afternoon of June 10.
