Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban delivered a message for “white people” on social media in the wake of the police-involved death of George Floyd and the protests it sparked.

Cuban, who was in Dallas on Sunday to participate in a vigil to honor the memory of Floyd, tweeted a letter from Emerson College president M. Lee Pelton and wrote that white people need to make a change in their lives.


“Dear White People: We are the ones that need to change. This is not one man's story. This is almost every black man's story. Which is why the problem is ours. We need to find OUR way to change what we do. There is no quick fix. It's a moral imperative,” he tweeted.

When asked what specifically he needs to change, Cuban responded: “I used to think treating people equally meant treating them the same. Like it was a math equation. I was wrong. I’m learning that treating people equally means treating them with equal amounts of respect, for who they are and what they have

Cuban is among the owners, players and coaches in the professional sports realm who have spoken out about racial injustice since Floyd’s death.

Floyd’s police-involved death last week kicked off widespread protests and unrest across the nation. Video showed Floyd was in custody when Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin held his knee on the man’s neck. Floyd screamed for help and later died. Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, authorities said Friday.


Three other officers who were there for the arrest were fired from the department but not arrested or charged.

Here's what I see as one of the problems...note, "one." The social issues behind all of this cannot be denied. It would be a rare person who did not think that all people should be treated equally and fairly. That's one of the social parts of the problem. BUT, it is hard to separate this fundamental concept from the concept that everyone should have everything that everyone else has. We've lost the pride in work in this country. Beginning with giving people things to help them...a social effort which has merits...doesn't really help them. Remember the giving a man a fish and teaching a man how to fish story. It appears this process of providing to people (without effort on their part)has created the mentality in some that they "deserve" to be given things from those who have, primarily because they do not have the pride to earn on their own.

It's a losing battle, as I see it. The basic concept is right...treating all people with respect. But lost in the shuffle, apparently, is that it isn't right to destroy what someone else has simply because you don't think a group of people has not been treated fairly. Seeing the videos of the destruction to property and even people is sickening...and could be enraging if left unchecked.

Law enforcement is like everything else. There are wonderful, caring, and helpful officers. But there is another group that derives its identity from being in power. We need law enforcement because there are people who want what others have, be it property, money, love, on and on. But, that's like everything else...look at the political environment today. How many politicians have used their office to enrich themselves? Look at the financial area...how many embezzlements, cheating of clients, etc., have we seen? It's everywhere.

But...here's the clincher in my mind because I'm a firm believer in Scripture and everything that I do revolves around the Truths there. Others may disagree but that's your prerogative. We are told that the "heart is deceitful above all things. Who can know it?" We cannot resolve the social issues because we are trying to change things that begin in the heart. When the heart is changed, life is different. And, only God can change the heart.
