Source: Dems Threaten Nelson In Pursuit of 60

While the Democrats appease Senator Lieberman, they still have to worry about other recalcitrant Democrats including Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson. Though Lieberman has been out front in the fight against the public option and the Medicare buy-in, Nelson was critical of both. Now that those provisions appear to have been stripped from the bill, Lieberman may get on board, but Nelson's demand that taxpayer money not be used to fund abortion has still not been met. According to a Senate aide, the White House is now threatening to put Nebraska's Offutt Air Force Base on the BRAC list if Nelson doesn't fall into line.

Offutt Air Force Base employs some 10,000 military and federal employees in Southeastern Nebraska. As our source put it, this is a "naked effort by Rahm Emanuel and the White House to extort Nelson's vote." They are "threatening to close a base vital to national security for what?" asked the Senate staffer.

Indeed, Offutt is the headquarters for US Strategic Command, the successor to Strategic Air Command, and not by accident. STRATCOM was located in the middle of the country for strategic reasons. Its closure would be a massive blow to the economy of the state of Nebraska, but it would also be another example of this administration playing politics with our national security.

Great, threats like this show me how little this man is.

He should be working for the good of the country instead of his pet projects that none of the voters want.

I smell treason.

Someone CLAIMS a senator said this. Which senator?

I think there's been talk about closing Offutt before....some of its functions have been moved elsewhere in the last decade or so.

I'm sure that's how he learned to get his way in Chicago...bribe and threaten.
He may be a president but he still has that mafia/gang mentality.

I was listening to the radio yesterday and they were talking about a closure here in Texas. I tuned in on the middle of the program, so didn't hear which one. But, they were talking about how many jobs it would affect and how it would impact national security. The speculation was that the closing was payback.

Desperate

They are desperate for this, or any version, to pass because this is so much more than health care. It is to be the foundation of rather total social takeover of our lives. Why are they so ignoring a 2010 backlash?

In this day of economic woe I see it as one of two things.

1) another example of the Gangster politics like they are used to in the most corrupt State in the Country where they roll over people, bribe them or worse.

or

2) A bully throwing out an empty threat trying to intimidate someone because they have an indefensible position and threats or bribes is the only way they know how to act. I say empty threat because if they were to go through with closing the base when promising jobs in the same breath it would come back to haunt them in a major, major way. I think their actions are already starting to rally people against them as more and more information about their intent and methods becomes known.

Let them Damn themselves!

Senator Nelson has been a man of his word much more often than not, so I hope this has no effect on his voting as he has promised. We've been blessed to have the man for Governor and Senator.

As far as the threat goes, if it is genuine, well, desperation leads people to do very foolish things. I wouldn't think closing down the home of the US Strategic Command would exactly endear Obama to the military.

2 problems with this make it BS

First, BRAC is finalized, Congress voted 5 years ago (the whole BRAC issue was an all or nothing choice for Congress, it can't be added to or have anything taken away).
Second, the president can't close any bases - that is a budget issue and has to be approved by Congress.
Sounds like someone is trying to stir things up. (And, just to be picky, the title should be NE AF base, not OK. Most people would not care, but I like things to match and be all ok.)

Offutt is where Bush showed up when 9/11 hit. There is an advanced underground facility there that would cost millions to move elsewhere. The Kneecap military plane is also based out of Offutt. That would be a huge mistake for him to close it.

What gives you the impression he really gives a damn about this country----and ESPECIALLY our military who defends us?!?!?!?!

If Nelson votes for the health care bill, he can blame the threatened closure of Offut as his reason. What a great Nebraskan! Lets reelect him!

If it is true, then Nelson should have a prime time press conference in Nebraska tomorrow night and show the proof and throw his President under the Nebraska express. Problem solved.

Obama won one electoral vote in NE. Yes, you guessed it, Omaha.

The wonderful progressive movement started in Nebraska (may God damn their souls.) NE allows electoral votes to be divided according to popular vote.

If you think for a second that Barry Soetto cares about America's defense, you are sadly mistaken.

Democrats have really done this in the past:

1960 – 1980

By the 1960s, Brookley base had nearly 13,000 employees. Rumors about closing Brookley Air Force Base started to surface in early 1960s. The Secretary of Defense announced its closure in 1964, widely believed to be President Lyndon Johnson’s retaliation for Alabama voting for his opponent Barry Goldwater in the 1964 presidential elections. When Brookley closed officially in June 1969, nearly 10% of the local workforce lost their jobs. This was the largest base closure in history.

BRAC is indeed locked in, BUT there is NOTHING preventing Obatboy from holding back funding through other channels, or even using it is a reason that he can't send money/resources to our troops abroad. We are already seeing that he will use the DoD funding bills to make sure that his PORK bills, and debt ceiling bills get pushed through. He is already planning on using through his "czars", the FDA, EPA, and others to implement any "global warming" changes that he wants, bypassing CONgress.

He needs to get run out of town, along with the other Socialists that have been installed. CONgress also needs to be housecleaned. 2010 can't come fast enough.

Some of the people that voted for him are already beginning to see their mistakes. Others are either permanently blinded by his Hopenosis, or completely holding on to his empty promises. I've talked with a few already and the ones that have changed their views and are realizing Obatboy for the Marxist he is, are OPENLY telling others what they have noticed. The blinded ones are feeling very disillusioned right now. And the ones clinging to the empty promises are fighting tooth and nail to be proven right, knowing that the longer they hold out, the more it will hurt if Obatboy does not come through with his campaign promises. They don't want to be known as suckers, and are praying for a miracle. I hope they realize that true Marxist Socialists don't believe in G_d, and without Him, there are no Miracles...

The mask came off for most people as Obatboy started to run for office. The people that are enraptured by him still don't see it though.

Hell he threatened the whole Nation yesterday in his speech after the Democratic "Closed-Door" Meeting..

His words.."It is GUARANTEED that if this bill doesn't pass, your health care bill will increase. It's also Guaranteed that your Insurance Premium will Increase Exponentially"

So what they are saying is, no matter what happens YOUR BILLS ARE GONNA SKYROCKET! The only difference is, once the bill passes in the Senate they have TOTAL Control over US!

It's a lie.

The base closing commission has the authority to close bases, not the President.

This is the very reason why congress passed that law!!

Your knee jerk reaction is to rationalize and defend anything done by this administration, isn't it?

Hold on. FL may be quite right on this one. Be careful of all the agendas out there, I would not put it past any politician on either side of the aisle to use anti-Obama animus to use.

So the article hints at:

A) If by some miracle, the Senate votes NOT to bankrupt the nation, and possibly save us a little money they will also...

B) Close an Air Force Base and save us a little more?

My God! When will this madness end?

To the best of my knowledge, everything here is correct regarding BRAC and political pot stirring...which is exactly what it is.

AFAIK, Senator Nelson, along with Senator Webb of Virginia, are still undecided and seated rather uncomfortably on Obama's electric fence.

We shall see.
