My dog is not doing well, we are going to the vet again in the morning but unless he has some new ideas we are planning on putting him down wed night here at the house. I started digging his grave tonight hes a good size dog 90 lbs so Its gonna be a good size hole. Anyone done this before, how deep do I need to be. I'm in south florida so no freeze and no predators.
Thank you

In sand, go 3 or 3-1/2 ft. I used 4 paver blocks on top, because our water table does fluctuate some. House is about 13 ft above sea level; dog is planted more like 6 ft above. I'm sorry; it's been 2 years since mine passed. They're such good buddies.

Mine will be cremated, and when it's my time so will I. I'll have our ashes scattered together. May your last days together be precious ones.

If we could afford cremation for our dogs we would do the same.

IMHO, 3 feet deep minimum, paver's on top good idea, we use rocks/sand stone.

I'm really sorry, it's heart breaking. My dog has been sick this week too but I discovered in time that is was her dog food. I hope you are wrong and your dog can be saved.

So sorry to hear your pup is not doing well. I pray it recovers fully and you don't have to face the loss. I live live in the FL panhandle and we have two of our loved fur kids buried on our property. Our current dog is nine. Hopefully she will be around for a few more years. Losing them is so hard. Our DD and SIL have a 10 yr. old boxer named Michelob who has to go through surgery for cancer in his hip on Tues. I think it is best for them to but him to sleep but I know they want to do everthing they can to keep him. If You have to bury your precious pup, two to three feet is plenty enough. One of our dogs, Bear, was 110 lbs. She is at rest in the shade of a large live oak tree.

It's a very sad task, but, in a way it helps with grieving. I think three feet should be adequate. We usually wrap our pet's body in a sheet before burial. It just seems like the right thing to do.

Praying for a better outcome for your pup and you.

I have 2 dogs currently, one is 17 and the other is 10. I grew up on a farm in the middle of nowhere, and I've lost many beloved pets. If you can't afford to cremate the pet, please dig a grave at least 4 feet deep. I've seen my own pets buried that deep but still dug up by whatever wild anilmal, and the remains strewn about. It's not a good sight, and one I'll never forget. I have to put my 17 year old dog down soon and I'll save, barter and steal what I can to have him cremated. That way I have control over his final resting place.

My last fur-kid was cremated. I lost him during surgery, and I just didn't feel up to going and getting him like that, so the vet took care of everything.

I've buried a few dogs, one or two were NOT deep enough, don't ask me how/why. Yeah, 3 feet sounds good.

I'm so sorry. We had to have our dog put to sleep on Friday. We brought her back home to bury here. I couldn't bear to have her anywhere else. We couldn't afford cremation and I don't 'like that myself. I sure hope to God my husband dug the grave deep enough. I have been worried about it. It was raining and he buried her on the back hill and I had a two year old in one hand and a three year old in the other while we watched my husband dig the grave and bury her so I couldn't walk down to look into the grave to see if it was deep enough. I know it was pretty deep. Nothing like crying in the rain. Our Rosie was 15 so I do understand what you are going thru. She had cancer in her sinuses and breathing had just gotten too difficult and she was suffering. I will be saying prayers for you.

Prayers for you. We are losing our little maltese probably soon. He has congestive heart failure and he hasn't been doing well for the last 2 days. He is still drinking water but doesn't want food. I hope he can just pass quietly here at home.

I know what you are going through:( I had to bury my 95# 14 y/o St Bernard a few months back. I made the hole about 3' deep, 3' wide and 4' long. I was so grateful the ground was soft. I buried her in her blanket and put about 10# of lime on top before filling it in. Never had any odor at all. Always use lime! After filling just put a couple of concrete blocks on top if there is any danger of anything digging in the area. I am so sorry, this is never easy. With Chloe it was actually a relief as she had been suffering especially the last two days before she moved on.

My sympathies TA12SEC. I know you are going through a difficult time. Go as deep as you can. When filled in, cover the top of the grave with bricks, rocks, concrete blocks etc. That should protect the grave. Then set a marker with your fur babies name. Again, very sorry!

Prayers for you and your dog. I had to put my dog down last week and know how hard it is to make that decision. Wish I could offer some advice on the burying part but we always have our dogs cremated. Just wanted to offer my sympathies.

Possibly a large section of a tree trunk on top the grave. Then you could put something decorative on top of the trunk. Check out a tree cutting service, they would have a good supply of trunks.

So just got back from the vet, vet says its not his time.....yet, real steroids now and double dose of tramadol. I just want him happy. His grave is almost ready its 4 feet long 3 feet wide but only 30 Inches deep, hit hard coral at the bottom, choped into 6 Inches of thatwith a axe. Thats as far as I got. Its gonna have to work. Thank you for the prayers and thoughts.

Sorry about your dog. Putting a pet down is really hard to do. My heart goes out to you! Praying for you and your dog!

We had to put our dog down last August. We grieved so bad. Since we have been married, we always had a least one pet in the house to come home to. When we moved to Mississipi we had four pets. One by one they passed away until we were down to one, so when Barney passed, we took it hard. Two weeks later we went to our local animal shelter and got another dog. We rescued him and he rescued us! He give us so much love, just what we needed.

Blessings to you,
Suzieq

We lost 3 of our 4 dogs in the last 18 months, so, as others have said, I share the pain you're in looking toward the earthly end of a beloved pet.

Then you'll definitely need to put lime on top of his body before burying him.
