Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said in a new interview that all rich countries should transition to 100% synthetic beef in order to significantly curb the greenhouse-gas emissions driving climate change.

In an interview published Sunday by MIT Technology Review, Mr. Gates, who is now co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and chair of the investment fund Breakthrough Energy Ventures, said the U.S. switching to plant-based meats like those sold by Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat will be “required” for saving the planet.

“As for scale today, they don’t represent 1% of the meat in the world, but they’re on their way,” he said. “And Breakthrough Energy has four different investments in this space for making the ingredients very efficiently. So yeah, this is the one area where my optimism five years ago would have made this, steel, and cement the three hardest.

“Now I’ve said I can actually see a path. But you’re right that saying to people, ‘You can’t have cows anymore’—talk about a politically unpopular approach to things,” he said. (my emphasis)

Mr. Gates said poor countries like in Africa won’t be able to completely transition to synthetic beef and that “we’ll have to use animal genetics to dramatically raise the amount of beef per emissions for them.”

“So no, I don’t think the poorest 80 countries will be eating synthetic meat,” he said. “I do think all rich countries should move to 100% synthetic beef. You can get used to the taste difference, and the claim is they’re going to make it taste even better over time. Eventually, that green premium is modest enough that you can sort of change the [behavior of] people or use regulation to totally shift the demand.

“So for meat in the middle-income-and-above countries, I do think it’s possible,” he continued. “But it’s one of those ones where, wow, you have to track it every year and see, and the politics [are challenging]. There are all these bills that say it’s got to be called, basically, lab garbage to be sold. They don’t want us to use the beef label.”

This whole carbon/global warming/climate change crap is EXACTLY THAT!!! Unadulterated CRAP!! This planet's climate has been in flux and changing since DAY ONE!! We're just in one more cycle. Oceans rise and fall. Climate gets warmer and colder. It is what it is and we have little if any effect on that. These BOZO's claim that all our cows fart too much methane.....B.S. How much methane do you think herds of buffalo farted when they were so large you could see them of orbit?!? How much do you think those GIANT dinasours farted and their CO2 levels were four times what it is now. Think about how many beasts roamed the planet for EONS!! GA-ZZILLIONS AND GA-ZILLIONS of methane farting beasties!! So what if the CO2 raises and lowers. It's only been doing that for BILLIONS of years and it's going to continue to do that for BILLIONS and BILLIONS of years.

Now if you want to talk about humanity poisoning the planet with toxic waste, radioactive fallout, garbage, chemicals, plastics, oil spills, blacktop, killing our oceans...Chernobyl and FUKASHIMA for God's sake....hey, I'm with you on that. Cutting down our ancient forests and basically shitting all over the planet....yep, that's true....we did it!!

I'm not eating synthetic anything that comes from a lab!! In fact I just picked up 1/2 side (340 pounds) of locally raised grass fed non-chemical/non-GMO/non-hormone/non-antibiotic gentle raised, responsibly harvested Black Angus beef....YUUUUUUUMMMMMM!! Take your synthetic lab grown crap and shove it up YOUR ARSE Bill!!

Oh and BTW Billy boy....it cost A LOT LESS than that "choice" beef in stores and I'm eating PRIME BEEF!! The best.

If it ain't REAL it ain't getting on my plate.....so FOAD!! (and I'm saying it nicely and being ever so polite when I say that)

That makes no sense. If we are rich we eat real food. If you are poor, then you may be stuck with the crappy food.

We need to get away from all this fake, prepackaged, artificial garbage food. We seriously need to get back to BASICS and real food. And BTW, it's not that difficult to have a little kitchen garden, or a neighborhood garden or something. We've just gotten lazy and believed all the BS advertising and marketing.

There's a family on a small lot in suburban Pasadena, California that for decades has not only raised everything they eat but basically have a market garden growing in their front and backyard. Lawns....who needs them, damn stupid if you ask me. The world needs to embrace PERMA-CULTURE and work locally, eat locally, support locally.

There was a book back in the 70's I believe called the "New Age Alchemists" that PROVED you could support and sustain a family of four completely on something like an 1/8 of an acre or less. And I mean everything, vegetables, meat, fruit, power, shelter, etc., etc., etc. Nothing was wasted, everything was recycled, reclaimed and reused.

FUNNY!!I was watching the weather channel/MSM yesterday (bigtime climate change people)...... they were doing a story on the crazy weather and limiting your carbon footprint...... THE VERY NEXT story they ran was how business people because of covid and flying private charters now..........OMG....... they are idiots......

Scientific thinking on human diet changes all the time. And it's not necessarily promoted on the basis of "healthy for you."

This is the big problem with "Government says." Whatever the government says is almost guaranteed to be because some high paying lobbyist has gifted a Congressman - and high dollar profit for Congressmen carries the day - and law.

Maybe let people decide what THEY want to eat? Of course some will make "wrong" decisions and have their lives cut short - but that is what "education" is for.

Although even that is political now...

Are Plant Based Meats Healthier than Regular Meat

When the Beyond Burger and Impossible Burger were introduced in 2016, they were met with rave reviews that boasted that the plant-based burger tasted like real meat.
Instead of using filler ingredients such as rice or tofu, these plant-based food companies created a new substance using modified plant proteins, coconut oil and a molecule called "heme" that makes the burgers taste just like a normal beef patty.
However, if you look at the ingredients of many of the plant-based meat alternatives, they do not read like “whole foods.” Many include chemical compounds such as methylcellulose, soy leghemoglobin and zinc gluconate.
In addition, compared with their beef counterparts, the burgers actually add up to the same, if not higher, caloric content.
At Burger King, the meatless Impossible Whopper is 630 calories, compared to the regular Whopper which is 660. In addition, both have roughly the same amount of fat — 35 and 40 grams respectively — but the plant-based version tops the regular beef burger in sodium counts with1,240 milligrams of sodium verses 980 for the beef one.
As far as sodium, calories and fat content is concerned, the plant-based meats don’t fare much better than regular meat. That being said, however, choosing a plant-based diet over a meat-based diet can cut down your risk of heart disease, cancer and type-2 diabetes.
But, a plant-based diet doesn’t just mean switching to meatless meat. You also have to add in healthy vegetables, whole grains and fruit to your diet as well.
