FOOD Ball not sending out canning jar lids - saying fall maybe...?

Just got off the phone with Lehmans.com. We put an order in for canning lids months ago. The Ball company is not sending them any lids. Period. This is a big dot. Huge. It means no summer canning. Nada.

Unless you have a stock or know the alternative food preservation techniques you're SOL.

I wasn't worried about food till now.

Ball's web site claims they have lids for sale. If my math is right regular lids come to about $5.70 a dozen! Can you say price gouging? Oh and shipping is free. Isn't that big of them?

There is evil in the world.

I had an order in at a local hardware store for 1/2 gal jars, 4 cases of them. The day I went to pick them up I was informed they never got them in. Said they talked to their Ball rep, and he stated they can NOT get the raw materiels in order to make more product. They got no future date from him as to if or when they will be shipping again.

Once again but a little bit louder... The compound for the seals comes from China and there is a shortage of the compound right now! We are basically at war with China, in case no one noticed.

Ball does NOT sell directly to the public, there's a scam website out of China that's claiming to be Ball, repeat BALL does NOT sell directly to the public! So many people/canners have been taken by this scam website it's not even funny. I see at least a dozen posts daily on the canning list about people buying lids from that so-called Ball website and were charged thousands of dollars on their CCs.

Buy them locally. Lehmans is "trendy" and expensive, and got slammed with all the newbies. Hardware store, big box stores like Menards, farm and fleet stores, Walmart, or the local grocery stores. I'm not seeing any real shortage here. They are all over the place.

WalMart is short here, but Fareway and HyVee were stocked. Regular pint jars are getting harder to find though.

I bought a couple hundred lids with reusable silicone gaskets years ago . Not sure what thename was .I'm sure summerthyme will be chimming in shortly about them. Rings are reusable i never leave them on the jars that just makes them rust away faster

I tend to buy at the end of the season, I saw grumblings in the Canning group on FB earlier in the year from Southerners trying to put up jams, etc., and someone mentioned Berlin Packaging. So I went over to Berlin and set up an account and bought 499 regular mouth lids, it wouldn't let me buy 500, only 499. A week later they were out as were several other wholesale suppliers. We put up a lot of meat this year, and still have more of the deep freeze to can down. I still need to put up cranberry sauce, and spiced crabapples, otherwise I'm done for the year unless God blesses us with apples or canning pears.

So why are we sending them BILLIONS of DOLLARS of our G-D food? Yes, I am shouting.
This lid situation made me sit straight up and I have a surplus. It is still freaking me out.

I'm good to go on lids and jars, but years ago I would routinely pick up any quantity I wanted of either lids/jars in both regular and wide mouth at Big Lots. Just throwing this out for a place to check if you have one locally.

Day by day
If you have a Lowe's nearby, give them a call. I was shocked a few weeks ago to see two full pallets full of pint canning jars, just inside the store by the doors to the garden area. They still had some left a few days ago. A few are better than none :-)

canning lids---
some years back i heard about an amish practice of how to 'revive' used canning lids and i posted it somewhere on tb.

IIRC, they took the used lids, simmered gently (NOT BOILING) in water with either salt or vinegar, im not sure, but did that for 10-20 min.
the dent in the 'rubber seal' disappeared and the lid could be used again.

now, i know some people who tried this. 1 or 2 people here on tb did an experiment and pressure canned jars of water using lids that they refurbished. the last report i recall was done a year or so after the experiment and the person reported the lids seals were still tight.

im sorry i dont remember their names but maybe they will see this and report any updates. and im sorry i dont recall exactly if the used lids were simmered in salt or vinegar. i have some notes on it somewhere ill try to dig up.

Sigh...

In this AO there are no canning jars, lids or even rings and lids available at any of the stores (that's in two different cities in my AO and 1/2 dozen smaller towns) and haven't been for many weeks.

I got my extras ordered and in early this spring and have picked up a few cases more early on when some of the places ran sales. I was lock downed so ordered them and had son pick them up and boy did he grip about it. When I've checked online, all summer the normal places have been spotty at best with nothing on hand 99.9% of the time.

A friend of mine emailed me a week or so ago that one local IGA in a small town not far from me had two stacks of regular mouth quarts with lids as an end cap for $14.99 a case! He said that later that week when he went in all but one case was gone.

If you're looking for lids, rings or jars at this late date you've missed the ship because it sailed a long time ago in most areas of the country.

A friend of mine in Utah said she got a case of lids at Ace Hardware, from a full pallet.Price was amazing. Not sure but i think it was something like $ 1.47 per doz.

It's also the height of canning season, people are putting up tomatoes, salsa, sauce, ketchup, and cowboy candy at a breakneck pace right now, next up applesauce, apple butter and pears, and if you have late season grapes then jelly and juice.

AFAIK, we haven't had a Sticky in awhile. This information should be in a Sticky. So important. Thanks for posting. Most people don't have the money to lose.

I called my little grocery and they have lids. More on order when those run out. The Wide mouths are $1.77 more through Amazon than they are at my grocery and the Regular mouths are $1.89 more. Amazon has deep discounted these items. Ebay on the other hand is having a scalpfest. Crazy high prices. Buyer beware.

Ya’ll mean to tell me there are folks on the Bomb that aren’t stocked up well into the next century on canning lids ?

Who knew ?

:shr:

Ain't telling you how many lids I actually own, but it's enough for several years yet. When stuff like this virus happened and shut down china, and then there's that dam is threatening to take out a good chunk of china, I stocked up a little bit more, just in case it might be five years before we see lids stocked plentiful in the stores again. The US needs to start producing it's own polymers and chemicals again, this is just crazy. Why we're buying aluminum from Brazil is beyond me.
