Are You Ready For A Cookie Shortage This Holiday Season?

Campbell Soup Co., the maker of Pepperidge Farm cookies, warned in an earnings call Wednesday that a cookie shortage could arrive this holiday season.

Campbell's CEO Mark Clouse said cookies under the Pepperidge Farms brand, such as Milano and Chessman, face "supply constraints" due to the virus pandemic forcing people to stay home, which in return has driven up demand.
"This portfolio is unique with proprietary recipes, and therefore we do not outsource production," Campbell told Bloomberg. "We've prioritized increasing supply and are already leveraging capacity opportunities across the network to meet increases in demand and maximize availability."
Supply constraints are hitting during the holiday season where cookie demand tends to surge.

Pepperidge Farm cookie demand rose 8.7% in the 13 weeks ending on Nov. 1, Campbell said. The company called cookie consumption this year, "sustained and very strong."

Data compiled by Top Data shows cookie consumption by Americans soared 25% since the start of the virus pandemic, with one in five Americans eating at least three or more cookies per day.

As we've previously noted, food shortages have been happening all year as the food supply chain remains stressed.

Not in my house, mine will be all homemade. After 10 years of being on here, this is my finally my thousandth post !

Mom routinely makes a bunch of cookies every year. Many end up in the freezer, to the point where we're eating Christmas cookies into March. Chocolate chip and peanut butter blossoms with the Hershey's kiss in the middle are standard.

And congratulations on the new milestone! Here's to many more!

This too shall pass.
I don't do much baking anymore, but it used to be that when we wanted cookies, we made our own. We hardly ever bought cookies -- usually only if we were traveling. My girls (the two older girls) started baking when they were seven or eight years old, although I admit we did end up having to buy air bake cookie sheets to prevent cookies from getting scorched when a girl forgot she had put them in the oven!

I admit that DH and I are both guilty of buying cookies (convenience, you know), but I have the means to make at least some basic cookies. I just dusted off the (2) Christmas cookie recipes last night, and had DH get what was lacking (fresh eggs and butter) from the grocery store. I also have a recipe handed down from DSis's FIL, which is a "Bohemian" recipe for kolacky. (DH doesn't like them because I make them with too much dough for his taste, though I am working on trying to make them smaller.) I have lots of jam, so....

No cookie shortage here. The missus regularly baked sweets for church, and always has way more than enough baking supplies on hand. China virus hit, no church, she's still sitting on those supplies. Her fudge is still sorely missed by the church members-she'd bake 2 pans and bring them home empty every time she made it.

Agree with Dennis-store bought cookies are generally pretty nasty. Can't eat them anyway, so no crisis here.

Stress eating. Yikes.

Type 2 epidemic right there.

My thoughts exactly. I know a lot of people on Faceborg who are complaining about the covid 19 pound weight gain they've made due to working from home. Turns out one can bake muffins during one's morning work break, and you don't have to share them with your office mates like you would in an office situation. Wonders what the average A1C numbers will be a y ear from now.

I don't doubt that they will be off the charts. It's also why I went back to cooking meals on Sundays for the week and cutting up veggies for snacks, plus making approved muffins. I'm guilty of mindless eating at times, but if it's a bowl full of cut up cukes, carrots, and radishes, I got the crunch without the calories and salt of potato chips.

He's out grocery shopping right now, thanks to you I just texted him to pick up some cucumbers. He did a fareway stop yesterday, for those not in Iowa fareway is closed on Sundays, and he bought some organic baby carrots and a huge head of broccoli. I'll be making veggie packs for his lunches this week, and cut up a large bag of veggies for myself.

Can't remember the last time I ate a store bought cookie...years? So there's obviously some people out there eating more than their fair share and totally gorging on those nasty things, which might explain the expanding number of the fat people we see around us. I'm not talking just over weight.....I'm talking BLIMP!

When grocery shopping I notice the bigger the person, the more JUNK, GARBAGE, CRAP food and soda they have in their carts, and even more JUNK food stacked in their carts if they have fat kids with them....and people wonder why American's are getting fatter?

HELLLLLOOOOOOOO!!

Stop eating CRAP and start exercising!

I'm obese and you would be grossly disappointed when it comes to judging the content of my shopping cart, as it's mostly fruits, veggies, and healthy proteins... okay the bacon not so much but hands off my bacon or I'll biotch slap someone into the next century! There's also a loaf of bread and buns in that cart, yes we do love our carbs.

Finally not a lurker!
One of my sisters sent a batch of cookies. Anisette and chocolate biscotti in keeping with our heritage. I had a few and tried to pass out the rest at work but it seems like everyone is on a diet!

I couldn’t care less about commercial “cookies.” (I use quotes because most of them are awful.)

But not "Vienna Fingers" which my DGM introduced me to when I was a toddler. Still like "Vienna Fingers" and will buy a pack now and then and keep hidden.

Most store bought cookies use oils and way to much sugar which I try to avoid.

The DW does bake good cookies especially oatmeal without raisins, but with pecans and chocolate chip with pecans. My DM baked cherry winkle cookies which were ok (Do not like baked goods with fruit except cobbler.). Mom's love took over and she started baking pecan winkle cookies without the cherries which I had to hide or they would disappear and the guilty party (sister) would never confess and state "Not me!". Had to come up with unique hiding places that my sis would not look in such as my underwear draw. Love does have its limit when it comes to cookies, fudge, brownies and pecan pie. Pumpkin pie is also a favorite and very little eating competition from the family except the DW which is not a problem that you really do not want put forth.

Have a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

We don't buy cookies...because we make them. However, I was in the base commissary today. No shortage of cookies in there for sure. Everything cookie you'd ever want to eat in life.
