When to Stabil(ize) gas

I'm considering getting some 5gal. gas cans in case there are some supply shortages because of the hurricane. Does anyone know how long I can store regular unleaded(87 octane) safely before I need to add Stabil?

I'll bet I'm not the only one thinking about this, so if anyone wants to move it to the main board, feel free.

I don't *know* but I can extrapolate for you. I've had gas in a car that wasn't driven for 6 months. It ran but rough. Have used gas in lawnmowers that was a year. This is in Texas where it is mostly warm. Two days of Winter-kinda thing.

However, if you plan to truly store this gas and not use-you will continue buying gas as you need it without using those presp I'd say as soon as you get it.

I would treat it now if you plan on long term storage(over 6 months).I would recomend PRI-G instead of stabil. In my own experince I have found that PRI makes the fuel last longer. At the present I am using gas purchased in 1999 and it still runs like fuel I bought today.

Like Satanta, I live in the warmer climes. I've used gasoline, in my vehicles, stored for 90 days with no problems.

But, if I'm gonna use it in my weed-eater or chainsaw, I add some Stabil to the mix, as those small carbs plug up easily. The mix keeps easily thru the winter months. Stabil has worked for me, as I don't keep any fuel over 6 months. Pri-G is better, but much harder to find, & more expensive. WallyWorld has the Stabil.

PRI-G is available from Survivalunlimited.com (also check Yahoo Shopping).

I recommend Yahoo shopping at the moment because Survivalunlimited.com
is based in Loiusiana. And we know it may be a few days (or more) before things return to normal.

The key thing in gas storage is the container. Best situation is an airtight container, fill until there is a minimal air gap (note "real" gas cans are designed to expand as the fuel expands as it warms and do not require a large air space) seal tightly. I have used fuel like this after being stored for a year with no additives (mind you know real excess temperature swings 25F-75F). Along with air the other big gas killer is water make sure you're container is dry to start with.
To double check before use decant some of the stored gas into a glass jar.

Thanks for the timely advice, to all of you.
For the timeline that i see; I don't need to store for more than a few weeks.
I'm just trying to get to a point where I will have more flexibility than "joe sixpack" if some local shortages occur.

Best Regards,
